Modern Media Causing Division Amongst People.

Discussion in 'Politics' started by ItsReneeYo_, Apr 17, 2014.

  1. Decades ago the only way to know the news was too either listen to the radio or read the newspaper.
Families and friends would gather around the radio too listen to the presidents speech for example FDRs speeches.

Nowadays we all have our preferred method of news media,tv , iPod, phone whatever I think this has further separated the people from politics. If I'm liberal I'll watch msnbc, conservative I'll watch fox etcetera. We all do our own thing and that's why we aren't as involved with politics AS A WHOLE.

We have access too 24 hour news cycles . To many big things happen and we have become desensitized.

Another big factor is sensationalist news trying too compete with other news stations. They all want to be first , they all want to give the best most shocking news and a lot of the time it's slanted and incorrect.

For example the Boston marathon thing the other day. The news labeled two boys with backpacks as terrorists and come to find out they were just two boys with backpacks.

It seems we are indoctrinated into separation across the board when it comes too news and media. We all have access to these new forms of news and media but we aren't better informed than prior decades.
I think the reason why people choose not to protest and be really politically active is because of doubts. You dig deep enough on the internet on something you believe and ultimately you will begin doubting it.. Everything is so uncertain.

If corporations couldn't buy media and the only way too watch the news was 2 stations and 2 newspaper prints with less competition. And if there was competition it would be more so based on accuracy instead of sensationalism would we be more politically active as a people? I'd like too think so.

  2. i think if there was only one or two sources to get news from, it would be even easier to lie to the public and manipulate their thoughts. so i like it better how it is today. you just have to be smart enough to weed through the bull shit.

  3. Yeah censorship is not the way to go. Odds are your opinion will be censored next.

  4. Renee yo. You make even me look sane.

  5. Maybe I shouldnt write threads in philosophy class with ideas from government class that I haven't capitalized on yet. Im reading it now and just... sigh.

What im trying to really say is , maybe with access to all these ideas and news outlets skewing the actual story even more is dividing us as a nation and makes it harder for people to agree politically on certain problems that need solutions.

  6. the only way to go forward is to teach people how to gather facts and scrutinize info. its one of the major problems of overabundance of knowledge, some people are simply too uneducated to decipher meaningful data.

you can not restrict knowledge to make things better.

  7. I see the opposite. I aee forums.like this and facebook and such, as a way for people to break free from forced propoganda like fox vs. Msn

  8.
Probably. The halo effect also has a role on why people choose to stay quiet or only speak upon the "right side." Such divisions cause this sort of animosity.

  9.
Maybe that is the whole point of manufactured confusion: confusion becomes a kinda consent to leave things well enough alone.

  10. Forget 'Fahrenheit' and '1984', we are in the midst of a 'Brave New World' kind of situation. Those that have power and an agenda don't censor anymore because that's too obvious.

Just drown us in meaningless political propaganda and pointless "pop culture" then multiply those by 100 in amount. Then when the truth does get out we won't believe it or be to apathetic to act upon it.

The worst part about mainstream media is their incredibly small pool of sources, and political bribes. There is no fucking reason 3 different 24 hour news networks should have the same 4 stories every month.

There are 7 billion people on this planet. There is always something new to report. But they all go to the same stories. Missing airplane this, Justin Bieber that, Ukraine, "terrorism" hot topic, random viral video next, out-of-context statement from politician of opposite party after that. And 9/10 the report they give is completely different than what actually happened.

For the people that don't explore other media outlets, they don't learn shit.

I think the reason people don't take action is because it's too easy to vent from the comfort of your home. When you actually had to meet and call people to discuss what was going on, it was easier to amass a crowd of people to do something. Nowadays you send a retweet and open a new tab to do something else.

The standards for journalists, and journalism, have declined in the past few decades.  I think that there's some truth in the opening post, what is being described used to be called Information Overload.

  13. But is that not in part due to the decline in demand for such things?

Dont they report on celebrities because thats what people want them to report on?

  14. There really is no such thing as neutral news. Its right wing Fox or left wing Huffington post.

Not all of us fit in a box, so every time I read or watch the news I know they are a pack of cocksuckers with an agenda.

  15. I think that things have been dumbed down. At one time, there were a number of major newspapers in every major city, and many people read several newspapers every day.  Some of them published early and late editions. I think that printed media was not perfect, and still isn't, but once it was out there they couldn't just delete it at will, like today with the internet.

  16. Right. But my question is did things get dumbed down because thats what people wanted? Or because the people in power just decided that.

  17. i entirely disagree. not only is there many thousands more stories reported every day, NOTHING can ever really be deleted once its on the internet. people have seen, systems have archived. it is as permanent as human knowledge gets.

when print media was the norm, stories were generally better written and more researched. however, unless you wanted local news, lots of repeated stories.

  18. Millennial here. What is printed media?

  20. Part of the problem is state sponsored 'news'. While independent media get crucified
