Applying For Work At A Headshop?

Discussion in 'General' started by namelessone, Apr 17, 2014.

  1. So I stopped into a local headshop today and found out they're hiring really soon, they just had to let someone go so they're hiring. I had a resume I offered to give the guy, and he told me if I just had a resume alone it wouldn't even get looked at. He told me to make a cover letter that tells why I specifically would like to work there, and he told me I should "be creative with it".

So here's what I'm thinking. I'm a pretty skilled artist (digital), I could make a little mini comic cover letter that includes all the stuff a normal cover letter should have and that should make my application stand out a bit. But would that be considered too unprofessional?

Also, what sort of stuff should I include to say why I want to work there? I was thinking of saying some stuff along the lines of I'm very interested in the subculture of smoking and want to learn more about the industry, and as an artist I love the aesthetics of pipes and water pipes (yes, I know not to refer to them as bongs), and maybe throw in something about supporting healthier ways to smoke. Does this all sound good? Anyone have any suggestions?

  2. your not gonna get hired.  that type of business theyll only hire someone they know.  its not the same as applying at the gas station

  3. ^Half true.
Just do the comic cover and if you don't get it fuck it. He said be creative. Make you on the cover blazing a bowl.

  4. if you talk to the employees they are guarenteed friends or family

  5. That's what I've heard, but I can't help but think the guy would've turned me down on the spot if it was like that, or told me they just weren't hiring or something. The way he talked about it made it seem like they had to get rid of someone unexpectedly and now needed someone to fill the spot, whether they knew them or not. Either way, it's not gonna hurt anything to try to apply there.

  6. Exactly.
One of the most important characteristics that he will looking for is customer service. Try to display that you can have good and positive customer interactions.
I basically got my last job because I'm patient and happy-go-lucky, which my previous supervisor expressed in a letter. Even if the job application didn't ask for it, try to get a reccomendation from a previous employer, or something if the sort, if you have had past oocupations.
