Ulcerative Colitis - Remission For Two Years, Then A T-Break...

I've had UC since I was about 8.  Went in for a colostomy around 9 but my mom backed out at the last minute (thanks mom!) to try to ride it out, even though it was pretty grim.

In any event, I started smoking (tobacco) around 12 off and on.  Smoked full time from 17 until a couple of years ago (so a good 25 years).  This effect has been well known, but other than an episode of House it's not like they prescribe smoking for UC.  I'd take UC over lung cancer.

My UC would always go into and stay in remission when I smoked (again, tobacco).  Soon as I quit, and like everyone it seems it took a number of tries, I'd be out of remission in a day, week, or month.

2 years ago I figured I'd try MMJ.  Started it a couple of months before I quit smoking tobacco.  Once I quit tobacco but continued MMJ the UC stayed in remission.  That is until this month - I took a cruise and since I won't travel with MJ, a 'forced' T-break.  Sure enough, 2 days in my UC was raging (no gory details, but suffice to say a lot of bleeding).

I suppose it could be random or psychological, as it's hardly a double-blind test and I'm a small sample size.  Still, what works works.

Most people believe it's the nicotine, but patches never did it for me.  In the UK they tried nicotine enemas without success.  I read an article that suggested that the carbon monoxide is a strong anti-inflammatory, which if true is maybe related.

If that's the cause, you could probably smoke potato leaves and get the same effect for all I know, but I don't.

Just a data point.  Not saying MMJ cures UC or would induce remission for anyone else, just passing along my experience.  Smoking something - anything it seems - triggers remission for me.

  2. I also have a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, unspecified chrons disease. I am a medical patient in Colorado and have been only smoking 1 strain of cannabis. Skunkberry, it won 1st place in the cannabis cup and it has pushed me into remission without a doubt. It has a perfect THC to CBD ratio. I also take CBD enriched edibles after I eat and I've noticed a big difference in pain. I quit cigarettes and noticed things were better, I still am on nicotine though with an electronic cigarette.

  3. Yep... oddly Chrons is worsened by smoking tobacco, the opposite of ulcerative colitis.  I wonder if Chrons is also aggravated by cannabis?

  4.
I don't think so. I know someone, and there are quite a few reports of people, whose Cron's is in remission from cannabis oil.

  5. I have crohn's disease and am going through a similar experience. Took a break due to a drug test coming up and I broke out of remission and starting getting all the symptoms again (couldn't leave my home for a good week before I got prescribed prednisone). I believe cannabis helps quite a bit with remission, but a lot of it is psychological.

Cannabis can undoubtedly treat every symptom of crohn's, and many have documented remission using cannabis alone. Look up Shona Banda.

I'm really curious as to why nicotine, or some other compound in tobacco, treats inflammation in UC, but not crohn's? My guess is it has something to do with difference in microflora of those areas of the GI tract.

It's worth noting that many cannabinoids (namely CBD) are anti-inflammatory, and have immuno-modulating properties, and this could be why (all?) autoimmune disease can be helped to some degree, by medical cannabis. Based on research, doctors are finding that the endocannabinoid system plays a huge role in regulating the immune system... it's my hypothesis that a deficient endocannabinoid system could cause a shift in the human microbiome, leading to diseases like crohn's and uc. Or vice versa - a change in our microbiome could lead to disease, or to deficient cannabinoids.

Autoimmune disorders in general are immensely more complicated though....unfortunately. Sooooooo many factors at play.

All my IBD brethren should get to reading about the human microbiome, and biological drugs. The Future, and the Secrets of our disease lies with gut microbes, and their interactions within our body.

Whenever I have to take a break for whatever reason (mmj), I can tell within a couple days that my appetite decreases, my energy declines, and my bowel motility is thrown out of whack. I definitely feel that mmj regulates my disease

I hate to re-bump this thread, but I'm curious to hear which strains you guys use to lower the cramps and motility. I would assume indica would be the strain of choice, but I'd love to hear your experiences with it.

I only ask because over the last year, I've been barraged by antibiotics and it has wiped my clean a number of times, so the doctors are never surprised when I tell them that I've got a bit of colitis that takes MONTHS to go away.

Also, what do you guys hear about CBDs in relation to slowing things down and bringing down the swelling? I have a some cannatonic, but it's pretty weak in CBD. Only 6%.

  8. I mostly make edibles or put butter in tea and it helps a lot with pain and cramping but not the rest. Too much wheat, gluten, dairy or citrus keeps me homebound. Curious to see what u all come up with.
