Why do we need religion?

Discussion in 'Religion, Beliefs and Spirituality' started by heehee420, Apr 12, 2014.

  1. Although it would be nice to have an explanation, does anyone think fuck it why do we need to obsess over what happens after death it is what is. The best you can do is set karma in your favor for whatever lies next

We don't necessarily need religion. But for some it is a necessary stepping stone, though some never take the next step. Either way, it's only necessary in the sense that we have it and anything that is is necessary for what is to be.

  3. This petty much explains how I make it do what it do.

  4. Just do what you enjoy and passionate about with good deeds.  All religions are pretty much ask you to do good things in life and get rewarded either next life or after death.

  5.
or the life you have now.

Religious people need to understand its not their way or the highway. Believe what you want but it shouldn't affect me in the least. When they go and try to change laws to suit them or start blowing shit up-they can go to hell..hah.. I believe there's Something Else-but it in no way affects anyone else's life but mine.

  6.
Religion is a way of living.  A way of living applying to yourself only, not enforcing on someone else.  If people are forcing religious believe to others through force and fear, then religion is no different from tyrannies and religions becomes a tool to control people.

  7. I think religion's purpose is to give people a guideline on how to live their lives. We actually have quite a bit of freedom and if you think about it, that much freedom can be overwhelming. What religion does is give you an idea, or some use it as a manual that can be applied to one's life. Its other purpose would probably be to explain the spiritual unknowns that are naturally part of the human experience.
I've never really avidly been part of a religion, but i appreciate that it's responsible for how society is shaped e.g, our values and morality.

  8. Religious people seem to also need to blame their problems on said deity if something goes wrong. Also praying seems to give them relief from their issues.

But we really don't need religion... All it causes is genocide.

    We don't. Simple.

And don't be saying 'it's personal', et cetera. I know Abrahamic Religions, and Christianity tells us to go shove Jesus in everyone's face, Islam tells us that all unbelievers are filth, ditto for Judaism.
Burn all remnants of Abraham's bigoted, sexually twisted bullshit and maybe then I'll be okay with religion.
Sorry if I offend any of non-Abrahamic faiths. If I offend any of Abraham's cocksuckers followers, well and good.

Edit: had to respond to this

Those guidelines were thought up and in many instances, cocked up by other humans like yourself. Surely you are able to do what even the stupidest of mammals can do and distinguish that which is conducive to the species from that which isn't?
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if I make it okay to kill people for whatever reason, people are going to be okay with killing me. Basic common sense, empathy, survivability and the need for a sustainable society should be all the guidelines we need. If we need sodding rituals and a dope in a hat to tell us what to do, we're not as intelligent a species as we think ourselves to be.

  10. As previously mentioned, it's not at all only used to explain what happens after death, it's a way for people to explain what's happening in the world around them rather than doing anything other putting blind faith in something to figure it out

  11. I dont believe we need religion as God didnt create religion but, a lot of what the bible offers should be widely accepted. It could guide mankind to a much better way of life, imo anyway. Sadly people dont read the bible anymore because it has been labled over time as rubbish.

  12. seems like these days people are religious just so they can be part of a group on the internet and fit in somewhere

  13. We don't need it but it will be around for awhile Because the complexity of the Cosmos is too much for closed minded or low IQ people so they just God did it. The bible, Koran, ect... Are obviously wrong. Evolution, the earth being billions of years old is just a fact.

I'm not against any religion but the ignorance of science in religious people is really high. You can still believe that there is a God that did his work through science but you can't deny it and create silly little stories like Adam and Eve.

  14. I am not religious, but there is at least one thing that is good about religion: It teaches the power of belief.
Imo, the power of belief is in very short supply in our time.

I think there is more to existence than just the physical.
We can not study it with our physical science, but we have other ways to study it.
The trouble is we can't prove anything about the non-physical to anyone else.
So, even if "rational people" feel something that is unexplainable in the physical realm, they will call it a disorder of some kind and worry that they are infected.

I am not saying that there are no disorders.
I am just saying that if there is infinity, then there is more to the universe than our physical senses can experience.

In fact, we know that there are many things our physical senses can't experience, at least without tools to help.
We only see a very small portion of the light spectrum. That means there is a great deal of stuff going on, right before our very eyes, that we can not see.
There are sounds we can not hear.
Tastes that we can not taste, and so on.

It's kind of short sighted to imagine that we could somehow quantify the entirety of existence.
So, belief is necessary if we are to give thought to the whole of reality.

Who knows where we would be if we had advanced our spiritual nature to be as advanced as our science.
If free will is an emergent property (maybe it's not,) then we are still toddlers soiling our diapers.

  15. setting karma in your favor seems a bit self serving doesnt it?

    Wouldnt that give negative karma?

I dont believe in karma. I believe in mutualism.

We should all be good because we all benefit from it

The perception of a need is purely subjective, so it's up to the individual as to what merit they see in it. All religions are cults to me, though. Restrict and limit your individuality to further perpetuate and immortalize deities passed down through each cultural tie. Sounds fun.

Says who? Who determines what "good" is, and who is to say that morals alone are the foundation for being a good person, spiritually or otherwise. Morals are built on a level of subjectivity that doesn't resonate with every individual, which renders it either worthless or condescending to those individuals. The idea of karma is one of an intangible self-serving genie. Karma doesn't exist because it's not a true force in nature; it exists because people perpetuate its existence to justify a need to get back at someone out of spite or an inclination to romanticize adversity in order to make themselves seem worthy of being thrown a bone by the universe. It's all just ego porn.

  20. The only think I have against religion is that If god created earth than why is religion only based around humans? The only reason why we have the characteristics we do is because of natural selection. Religion should include all living things-- not one species. I know this sounds kind of hippie like, but it makes sense.
