Education, in my mind, should always take priority over legislation, especially in matters of firearms. Knowledge is power and education is a means of attaining that power. You can't legislate away behavior, but you can educate people and make society better in the process. Gun legislation we see today will simply create more criminals (law offenders, not criminally minded people necessarily) instead of make society safer. An educated populace is typically indicative of a stable and productive society. Areas of high crime are usually indicative of poor educational opportunity. By educating society we increase safety and awareness of not only the law, but create rational incentives for productive and beneficial behavior. People with little education and socio-economic opportunity are more likely to turn to crime. So what am I getting at? Society needs to address poverty and education before it can find some magic cure-all for gun violence. Individuals need to be able to keep firearms for their own safety, and for the safety of the collectively governed masses (as explained in the 2nd Amendment). Restricting access to fire arms through legal venues will not necessarily decrease demand, but it will decrease gun safety and accountability. An educated and properly sheltered society has little incentive for violence and crime, and an armed society does not equate to a dangerous or lawless society.

    Education is the only "cure-all"...
