Stealth grow box for only 80

  1. So I spent part of my day today making a stealth grow from an old tall boy dresser, and I thought it would be nice to share.

I got the dresser for free, and took out the drawers, and carefully disassembled them, I the drawer face was separate from everything else. I carefully took the back off so it could be re-installed with hinges. I then screwed the drawers on from the inside.

I decided it could use a paint job, so I went with a spray can. It took more than one can so I spent $8 on paint. I had some new knobs just sitting in a box so I threw those on it as well.

I took some black/white plastic sheeting that I had leftover from my room, and used staples and tape that I also had leftover.

I spent $2 on a clip on fan, I think it's 8". I got a 5" exhaust fan used for $10. I spent $16 on a good extension cord with 3 outlets, $6 on a timer, $8 on a light socket splitter and socket that plugs directly into a socket. I had the power bar sitting around, and I bought 2 CFL's that are 150W each (actual usage 43W) 6500K as this will be a vegging box for clones and seedlings.

Total spent, $80. If you build one of these your cost may vary depending on what you already have or don't have. If one didn't have the poly, it could just be painted white inside. If I hadn't used the poly though, I would have had to use spray foam to seal it.

Here are photos of my progress and the end result.

  2. Youre gonna need more light than that or they will stretch

  3.
I would add some more. They are fairly large CFL's. 2650 lumens each. Do you think 4 of those bulbs total would be enough? I do plan to raise the plants up close to the bulbs when I get something in there, so I thought it would be ok.

  4. Okay, so I guess this design needs a few more things. If I double the light I will spend another $40, and I think I should add a thermometer/humidity detector, which is about $10, so the total cost will be around $130 for me. I think that's pretty good for something that can sit in your home undetected, and uses very little power.

  5. yea 4 would be good i use 10k lumens for seedlings and a little veg and can do around 10 under it...they start to stretch after like 6 inches though unless put under more light...make sure you have them close like you said
