First Grow DIY CFL Hydroponic Closet

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by kamicasse, Apr 5, 2014.

  1. Hi, This is my first post, so hi to all the Grasscity Comunity, i started my first Grow, in this system that i made myself.

I have the plants for 1 month now, i started from little seedlings, measuring not more than 5" .  Now, like many others before me, and for the first time, i am having doubts about the sex of my plants, since their seeds are from a random bag.  Now i put them to flowering 12/12 light cycle.

Any comments about the sex of the plants is welcome,  i will continue to post more pics.

    Best Regards,

Sex usually shows after about 5 days, but if it's bag seed it will probably be female, or at least feminised. Most of the time when a grow is pollinated its from a plant going hermie

  4. Thanks for the reply, yesterday i spot a tiny red spider, which i killed on the spot, after i put some bug spray repellent, organic of course. But i think it was too strong and today the plants and new leafs came up a little bit dry up, and with some spots like it been burned. Guess i mess up. I also need to find a humidity gauge asap, i am blind at this.

  5. The spider was probably wandering around for insects to eat, it's very unlikely to eat your plants. I'm gutted for you about the burns, it's a right piss take when a company sells you something that they say is safe and it does that to your plants. Try a few drops of neem oil in some warm water and a drop of dish soap, spray this all over the plant when necessary, it won't harm the plants at all. I wouldn't worry about humidity too much, as long as it doesn't go over 70% it's fine. My humidity gets pretty high sometimes but I don't get any effect from it

    Hi,

I have some updates, i went on vacations, (10 days...) and my plants grow a lot more than expected, so they burned a little bit until on lamps.

I have them on timer in 12/12 cycle, and seems like because of the lack of fresh air, temps might have gone higher than 30º Celsius.  Now that i am back, i lower them, but there are no signs for resin , or of they been flowering...  no sex showing yet... or any signs of full blooming. :(

My question now is, i had to pruned them using the FIM method, even knowing that is not recommended on flowering stage, but i have no more room!...

If they came back to veg state, will they grow more when they come back to flowering? Perhaps i am doing something wrong, and that's why they don't flower?

Is it a light issue perhaps?  (I am thinking to put on one side of the close, large warm light flourecent tubes, to reach the whole plant. recommended?) Any help is really appreciated.

Some info, i am using Hydroponic system, with oxygen stone, and external Co2 Generators by fermentation, 2 fans, 1 air extractor, aprox... 13,000 lumens for CFLs, now all in warm light to avoid growing.

    thanks for all.

You really shouldn't top your plant after you switch them over. It stunts the plants growth.

Maybe next time you could try out LST.

  8. By stunt, you mean also flowering ? or just veg grow?... i didn't have another option, well that i could have imagine... tomorrow i will try to get a HPS 150watt lamp, considering the size, and that they are 2 plants i think it can work ok.

  9. They can triple in hight from when you change to 12/12 to harvest day. You should normally expect flowering to show within a week, but as you have cut the tops off (where the flowering would start) it may take longer. You would be better tying them down. A ScrOG screen is truly essential in this grow. A screen positioned just a few inches off the top of your res would have kept all this veg growth at a few inches.

On a more positive note, they do look nice and healthy. You have done well below "ground" for sure. If you are getting an HPS, and a bigger grow box I presume then your problem will be sorted. Have you thought about a tent? They are cheap to buy and aren't necessarily permanent. They are a ready to go package and come in all sorts of sizes to fit the room you can spare

I still have some inches to lower the plants, and if i switch to hps, i would gain some space that the big CFL lamps are using vertically.

When they flower again, would the grow vertically more, even if i have topped them ? I still don't khow whey the flowering stopped before i topped them, i dont see any crystal on the leaves, i was starting to see them before the vacations.

should i remove the Co2 generator?

I'm a little lost now. Am I right in saying they have been taken off 12/12 now?

You will probably find the HPS takes up about the same space given that they require the plants to be further away due to the hot bulb

  12. They have been in 12/12 for almost 3 weeks now, but i noticed no progress so far, only in size. And there are almost no crystals in the leaves.

  13. There won't be any trichomes on the leaves for ages, some strains don't have this until late flowering. You would have seen some pistils at the top by now but you cut them off so obviously they can't grow there now. Pistils will form lower down but it will be a bit later.

So they have been on 12/12 consistently for 3 weeks? Without any change in the light schedule? They will probably show fairly soon. It's impossible for them to not flower so it's just a case of waiting. You have to wait around 9-10 weeks for harvest anyway so there's no rush

  14. Late bloomers means girls and the lower powered lights are not helping you along much.

Back when I grew with floros some plants did take 3 weeks.

It is these two statements that are confusing me. Have you changed the light schedule back to veg at any point?

  16. First, thanks for your kind help. Now about the light cycle, no I haven't change it back from 12/12 , sorry for my bad English. I thought that because I don't see flowering yet or crystals anymore, that it went to veg state regarding the light cycle. I wonder how much more they will grow, this closet is the only place for them.

Now that I have top them, could that avoid them for gaining height? Are the risk that high of they going hermaphrodites?

  17. They can triple in height compared to what they were right before you changed to 12/12. Topping is a form of training but you don't want to hinder any growth while it's in flower. Have you tried bending the tops over and tying them down with cord? Make large arches with the stems, then the following day pull them down a bit more. Arch them right over, you should be able to gain quite a bit of height.

Basically what you have done is let them grow wild early on when you should have been training them to keep them low. Next grow top the tips, LST or ScrOG and you won't have trouble.

Don't worry though, it's an easy mistake to make. I have miss judged my available height many times. As for flowering though, it's simply a case of waiting. Don't cut anything else off lol

Got some updates ;) I remove the CFL to a HPS 250watt system, i got fast results in veg with CFL, but the delay in flowering is eternal. The light now is awesome, but now i need to improve the side panels to a more reflective white paint. Any ideas?

I share some photos, you can see that i installed a net to see if i can contain the height grow, and also put the temp humidity probe inside for a easy reading. 2 Co2 generators at the side, seems to fast things up.

The final pics is to ask if it is showing sex, as this is my first time that i actually saw and grow a cannabis plant myself.
