Has capitalism failed?

Discussion in 'Politics' started by Papfo, Mar 29, 2014.

  1. So I recently had one of these interesting debates with my uncle (again) on the matter whether or not capitalism has failed.

His view is that capitalism has succeeded as a system, since humanity has progressed rapidly. He believes that with a free economy anybody can become rich if he is inclined (he is self made). He also maintains that many rich people (notably bill gates) give a lot of money in charities and help the economy by providing jobs. On the matter of children workers in china , he blame the state for the low waged and not the corporations that take advantage of it.

I contrasted his arguments by telling him that most western countries are currently in debt and the gap between rich and poor keeps increasing. Also many wars have occured for economic reasons and I told him that the basis of capitalism is the western rich countries living off the smaller poor ones

What are your views on this issue?

  2. think what you will about it in theory, but in practice much good has come from it.

even if it failed miserably in every instance i would forever remain an anarcho capitalist. any less is not a free society, for which i would gladly trade any and all safeties and conveniences to have.

  3. Considering that "capitalism" doesnt really exist, then no. Corporatism, state capitalism, crony-capitalism, etc, then yes, those have failed, and continue to fail, and will always fail.

This has nothing to do with capitalism. If I'm understanding you correctly you're talking about government debt which, obviously, is the result of government spending. In a true capitalist economy, there would be no taxation, and thus no government spending.

I am not exactly sure how true this is, I have seen the argument made pretty well that this is a myth. Take a look at this graph

Even if the gap were actually increasing, it would undoubtedly be the result of crony capitalism. The wealthy elite recieve government privileges through bailouts and money printing of the fed.

This is true, but again the fault of crony capitalism. The military industrial complex is completely state subsidized, if war were voluntarily funded it would not exist.

The workers in these poor nations choose to work at western factories because it is the best, highest paying job they can get in their nation.

  5. another thing to note is that wealth disparity doesnt mean shit. its the minimum standard of living that does, and youll see that the poorest of the poor continue to gain more wealth/higher standard.

  6. We have and have always had a mixed economy, not pure free market capitalism. There really isn't a good example of capitalism by itself, at least that I'm aware of, to say whether or not it would be successful, considering markets are rarely allowed to go on unregulated for too long. It also would depend on how you define economic success. Black markets might be a good example of capitalism, but the whole issue of crime kind of perverts any fair assessment of their success.

  7. Don't blame true capitalism with the faults of corporations buying their way into the government, and especially the international bankers control and manipulation our country's economy via fed reserve.I love capitalism. Most "free" type of economic system as I see it. Fuck socialist like economic systems or any type of government (like previous Communist ones) that express totalitarian like virtues and the control over your wealth or belongings.

  8. Everyone should take up arms and have a revolution. Take back your land and country.

The wealthy must be taxed for their transgressions.

  11. i don't really see how anybody could be opposed to true capitalism in a free market tbh. unless its for the sole purpose of leeching from others anyway

  12.

Judging someone by their avatar is only someone of low intelligence would do, or maybe just trolling. That's most likely.

If you live in the USA and pay taxes, you are supporting a capitalist society ran by a government. Exactly against the views of the person used in your avatar. He wants a free market without government.

    LMAO!

  13. Murray Rothbard paid taxes because he didn't want to go to jail you can't do much preaching for a free society from jail. Just like I do, I can't imagine a worse life then being stuck in a tiny steel cage subjected to beatings and rape by both your fellow prisoners and the guards.
So I'm guessing you have the Che avatar to be ironic? I once sold Che shirts with a friend we charged $20 for one Che shirt I laughed the entire time at the irony.

  14.
Or you can be like Che, and do something about it.  :metal:

  15. capitalism has failed

its ok sitting in a wasp country saying how good it is while thats built off the exploitation of millions of people who have NO opportunities to improve their lives. Wealth inequality is ridiculously high. Capitalism will evenentually destroy itself as we progress to a better system. Its a timeline humans have always followed from primitive communism, to feudalism and now capitalism

  16. Yes, in a sense that....we can do better. No, I don't have answers, but all of these great minds put to waste working mediocre jobs surely can figure out a system more equal, with more quality stuff (no cheap chinese shit), and one that advocates reusing, selflessness and dareisay love.

  17. Please explain to him that America is not a true free market and go from there.

  18. Capitalism is free market. America is not capitakist anynore

  19. Great way to word it.

  20. The majority of people who don't support capitalism don't know what it is.
