This thread will be dedicated to Self Realization.

Realize the self alone remains and you shall know God.

The teachings and quotes in this thread will mainly come from Sri Ramana Maharshi. But I will also update with other quotes and lessons from other self realized sages, gurus and teachers.

Reality must always be real. It has no names or forms but is what underlies them. It underlies all limitations, being itself limitless. It is not bound in any way. It underlies all unrealities, being itself real. It is that which is. It is as it is. It transcends speech and is beyond description such as being or non-being.

Reality is the loss of the ego.

Accept the world as unreal, if you are seeking the truth and the truth alone.

Know that the eradication of the identification with the body is charity, spiritual austerity, and ritual sacrifice; it is a virtue, divine union and devotion; it is heaven, wealth, peace and truth; it is gracel it is the state of divine silence, it is the deathless death, it is jnana, renunciation, final liberation and bliss.

2. Sat-Chit-Ananda

Existence-Consciousness-Bliss

Sat Chit Ananda is a beautiful pointer to our true nature.

It is usually translated as Sat meaning Truth, Existence or Pure Being, Chit meaning Consciousness and Ananda meaning Bliss.

Sat Chit Ananda can be a single word describing being awake. And we can also have a better understanding and confirmation of awakening as we look at the three aspects individually.

Truth, Existence or Pure Being is an absolute. Sat is what always remains regardless of time or situation. When we awaken, we constantly recognize Pure Being. We are consciously aware of Pure Being as our true nature, the core and foundation of all life.

Consciousness is the first manifestation of our true nature. It is streaming from all of creation. When consciousness becomes conscious of itself, it is like looking in the mirror at your own eyes or looking into the eyes of another. There is a simple and deep recognition of the absolute as your self and in everything else.

Amazingly, consciousness is often not aware of itself. It is usually the mind's distractions which keep consciousness from being "self-aware." However, when the mind is allowed to be still, consciousness can simply gaze upon itself, and Sat Chit Ananda is realized.

Pure being and consciousness are always present although they may not be recognized. And it is mostly the mind or ego which distracts us from the direct experience of this divine presence.

When the mind unwinds and becomes calmer, Bliss, Love and Happiness naturally arise.

They are not evoked. They are natural like light shining from the sun. The awakened one doesn't need to "think good thoughts" to feel good. Feeling good is our natural state when the mind is calm and open.

Ananda is so close. Letting go of the mind for a moment as we watch a sunset or a sunrise, Bliss arises naturally. So Ananda is as natural and inherent as Pure Being and Consciousness. Awakened ones simply have direct experience and knowledge of their absolute, untouched and eternal existence as Sat-Chit-Ananda, Pure Being-Consciousness-Bliss.

Letting go, and paying attention to what is always present naturally allows this divine life to overtake your existence.

Pure Being, Consciousness and Bliss are unavoidable.

It is more abundant than the air we breathe.

Sat-Chit-Ananda is and has always been your true nature.

4. There is no greater deception than believing that liberation, which is ever present as one's own nature, will be attained at a later stage.

5. You'll see that it's your expectations of your own mind that are creating your hell. “I expected you to be…” When you get frustrated because something isn't the way you thought, examine your thinking, not just the thing that frustrates you. And you will see that a lot of your suffering is created by your models about how the Universe ought to be. And your inability to allow it to be.

It's like you come here and it's a beautiful day, so you expect the next day is going to be beautiful. Then it rains, and you are disappointed. Isn't it funny that when it rains, you should be disappointed? To take nature and allow nature, when it's in its natural state, to make you miserable. It says something about you.

~Ram Dass

The experiences that come and go, the objects of consciousness that come and go, the objects of perception that come and go, what we believe to be real that comes and goes, and in fact whatever that comes and goes, is not fundamental and is not in fact Real. The states of consciousness are as appearances in the Self.

In this transient world, we are bound to experience many things according to our conditioned mind. Joy and sorrow, good and bad, pleasant and unpleasant conditions--all of these are part of life. This is the nature of the human condition. Bhagavan tells us to be fearless and adopt the attitude that whatever happens, we will witness it.

Let what comes come, let what goes go.
Why do you worry?

6. Ah, but one knows that the nectar is reached only when the petals of the flower are peeled back, one by one.

The nature is realized when the thoughts are gathered and sorted like spring cleaning.

7. I have a new found love for this area of topics

It's all about accepting what is- what we can sense from Nature and perceive with our limited minds, while accepting that everything changes.

-Most everything I post on my own on this website (not just me replying to someone) is just me talking to myself. haha

9. God can be seen only by god and not by man (the mind) . "No-mind" state is a godly state. There will be no second person to say 'there is god'.

Anything that is put into fire will become fire itself.

So too, mind that is merged in god will be consumed by god (become one with god).

10. Worshipping of one's self is nothing but feel good psycho-babble. To know God a person must strife to have a personal relationship with God.

11. God, guru and self are manifestations of the same reality. Enquiry isn't worshipping the false sense of the body and ego, but rather an act of worship through direct experience with the divine.

Surrending does not entertain the ego. Extinguishing the mind and ego is spiritual sacrifice to the personal relationship with the divine.

12. ''Have you seen God?' I asked. 'And if you have, can you enable me to see him? I am willing to pay any price, even my life, but your part of the bargain is that you must show me God.'

'No,' he (Ramana Maharshi) answered. 'I cannot show you God or enable you to see God because God is not an object that can be seen. God is the subject. He is the seer. Don't concern yourself with objects that can be seen. Find out who the seer is.' He also added, 'You alone are God,' as if to rebuke me for looking for a God who was outside and apart from me.

What is the use of a God who appears and disappears? If He is a real God, He must be with you all the time.'

13. Ramana: Keep your mind still. That is enough. You will get spiritual help sitting in this hall if you keep yourself still. The aim of all practices is to give up all practices. When the mind becomes still, the Power of the Self will be experienced. The waves of the Self are pervading everywhere. If the mind is in peace, one begins to experience them.

Question: Which is better for me, to gaze at your eyes or your face? Or should I sit with closed eyes and concentrate my mind on a particular thing?

Ramana: Gaze at your own real nature. It is immaterial whether the eyes are open or closed. Everywhere there is only the one, so it is all the same whether you keep your eyes open or closed. If you wish to meditate, do so on the 'I' that is within you. It is the Self. Because it has no eyes, there is no need either to open or close the eyes. When you attain Self-knowledge, there will no longer be any ideas about the world. When you are sitting in a room, whether the windows are open or closed, you are the same person, in the same state. In the same way, if you abide in the Reality, it is all the same whether the eyes are open or closed. It matters little whether external activities go on or not.

Question: In my present state, is there sufficient faith, humility and surrender in me? If not, how to make them complete?

Ramana: You are perfect and complete, so abandon the idea of incompleteness. There is nothing to be destroyed. Ahankara, the individual 'I', is not a real thing. It is the mind that makes the effort and the mind is not real. Just as it is not necessary to kill a rope that one imagines to be a snake, so also there is no need to kill the mind. Knowing the form of the mind makes the mind disappear. That which is forever non-existent is already removed.

Question: What books should I read for personal study?

Ramana: The Self is the real book. You can glance anywhere in that book; nobody can take it away from you. Whenever you are free, turn towards the Self. Thereafter you may read whatever you like.

Question: How to uproot the weariness, fear and anxiety that arise during meditation?

Ramana: Find out to whom these questions occur. By conducting this enquiry these things will disappear. These things are impermanent. Do not pay attention to them. When there is knowledge of duality, fear arises. Fear only comes when you think that there are others apart from you. If you direct your mind towards the Self, fear and anxiety will go away. In your present state, when your mind is agitated, if you remove one kind of fear, another will rise up and there will be no end of them. It is a laborious task to pluck the leaves off a tree one by one. The 'I' feeling is the root of all thoughts. If you destroy the root, the leaves and branches will wither away. Instead of forming bad habits and taking medicine for them, it is better to see that such bad habits are not formed.

Question: During and after meditation, I get many thoughts about the unhappy people of the world. What will happen to the world?

Ramana: First find out whether there is an 'I' in you or not. It is this ego 'I' that gets these thoughts and, as a result, you feel weakness. Therefore find out how identification with the body takes place. Body consciousness is the cause of all misery. When you conduct the enquiry into the ego 'I', you will find out its Source and you will be able to remove it. After that there will be no more questions of the type you are asking.

The body itself is a disease. To wish for a long stay of that disease is not the aim of the jnani [one who has realised the Self]. Anyhow, one has to give up identification with the body. Just as the "I am the body" consciousness prevents one from attaining Self-knowledge, in the same way, one who has got the conviction that he is not the body will become liberated even if he doesn't desire it.

14.
So who destroys the root? If there is no "I"?

15. You want me to answer?

Who is asking the question?

"Who am I?"

Find for yourself.

16. "I" is individuality.

I am that I am is what your nature is.

Satchitananda

17.

My point is... one can't undermine and negate the "I" positively. Such a position would be self-refuting (pun intended). :smoke:

18. Ah the paradox

:)
