Fire consumes home of terminally ill girl

Family says contest win would help 9-year-old receive life-saving treatment

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. -A family fighting for legalization of medicinal marijuana in Oklahoma in hopes of saving their terminally ill daughter is facing a new battle. They must rebuild their Midwest City home after a fire destroyed it Tuesday afternoon.

In January, KOCO 5 News profiled Avagrace Spencer, a 9-year-old girl who is suffering from a rare medical condition called Lennox Gastaut syndrome.

Avagrace proudly showed off her customized red trike and rode it up and down her street. Now, the trike sits in her front yard destroyed by the fire.

“It's a total loss, all the baby pictures and everything,” said Virgina Ann Spencer, Avagrace's mom.
The family's pet birds died in the fire. Looters also stole Avagrace's wheelchair from the front yard.

“It was out front, it was right here and it's gone,” Spencer said.

Now the family is asking for help. Avagrace was entered into a national contest where the prize is a new wheelchair-ready van.

Spencer said if Avagrace wins, she will drive her daughter straight to Colorado so Avagrace can be treated with medicinal marijuana.

“It's provided miracles for children like my daughter,” Spencer said.

It could be her last hope. Doctors say Avagrace's brain is slowing down and have given her less than a year to live.

“We've been told this is her last chapter and we are not willing to accept that,” Spencer said.

Give them the help they need, blades!

And if you are in that area and hear about the wheel chair- report it! This is one case where snitching would be a dang good thing and will get you good karma! Stealing a dying child's wheelchair from fire salvage, is about as low and evil as you can go!

  2. I'm ignorant on how medical cannabis would provide life saving treatment for Avagrace

Lennox–Gastaut syndrome (LGS), also known as Lennox syndrome, is a difficult-to-treat form of childhood-onset epilepsy that most often appears between the second and sixth year of life, and is characterized by frequent seizures and different seizure types; it is often accompanied by developmental delay and psychological and behavioral problems.

Treatment with CBD in oily solution of drug-resistant paediatric epilepsies.                 (abst - 2005)          http://www.cannabis-med.org/studies/ww_en_db_study_show.php?s_id=173&&search_pattern=EPILEPSY

“Conclusions: So far obtained results in our open study appear encouraging for various reasons: 1) no side effects of such a severity were observed as to require CBD discontinuation; 2) in most of the treated children an improvement of the crises was obtained equal to, or higher than, 25% in spite of the low CBD doses administered; 3) in all CBD- treated children a clear improvement of consciousness and spasticity (whenever present) was observed.”

  4. Thanks for the info @[member="Storm Crow"]. If all goes well and the CBD do you know what would be an expected lifespan for a girl that age?

There is no way of telling, fatcuz. She has had seizures for years, and each one can do damage to the brain. If she responds well to the CBD, and the brain damage isn't too bad, I don't see why she couldn't live a relatively normal life and life span!  Will she ever be "normal"? Likely not. Who knows how much damage has already been done to her brain? :confused_2:

But no matter how much longer she lives on CBD (presuming she gets the CBD), it is very likely to be a lot longer than the few short months the doctors give her now! The seizures, and side effects of the pharmaceutical drugs she takes, are killing her.

With CBD, Avagrace has a chance- without it, she will die.

  7. You have to be a monumental asshole to steal a wheelchair from the front yard of a charred home.

  8. these stories are encouraging and depressing because it is becoming so obvious that the doctors have started destroying a little kids body with a treatment and then write them off of their executive tablets to be given a time line for their life span shortened even further from toxic meds.  how freaking depressing, doctors wake up and aim for less life threating medication for little kids. Shit!!!!!!

  9. This same family pleaded there case to a senate committee in February only to be questioned by DHS the followin day. They are good people who are caught in bad storm. Keep them in your prayers
