Cat owners beware

  1. So yesterday I adopted a rescue kitty (picking him up today I can't wait!). But before we finalized everything she asked if I was going to declaw the cat. I said most likely.

When I was a kid my first cat scratched me up real bad. Between that and living in an apartment my parents declawed her. Now I'm living in my own apartment and had planned on declawing the cat because that's how I was raised and the cat was going to be indoor only anyways.

But then she went on like a 5 minute speech telling me about the horrors of declawing a cat. It's not really tearing out their nails as most people would assume, she said it's more like ripping off their fingers. She said it changes the way cats distribute their weight so they'll walk differently. As well as that the experience as a whole is so traumatizing that sometimes the cats personality can change forever.

After she told me all of that I completely changed my mind! I had no idea that declawing a cat was so horrible for them.

I really appreciated that she took the extra time to educate me on that and I thought I should relay the information to my fellow weed and pet enthusiasts. Keep your cats happy, even if it means sacrificing some furniture!  :smoke:

  2. Yes, it's well known to most cat owners that de-clawing is bad for the cat..trimming their claws every so often is a much better choice

  3. Got our cats claws done when he was old enough to and 4 yrs later he is cool with it and we have saved cash on replacing furniture before its time.

  4. Check out Soft Paws as a potential alternative. Sure they look goofy, but they'll protect your furniture (and skin) until your cat is old enough to know better. :p

Also, if you start handling their paws a lot from a young age so that they're used to it, it shouldn't be too hard to use a nail clipper/trimmer on them to keep their claws a little more blunt.

  5. I had to fight to make sure my cat didn't get declawed and I'm glad I did!

  6. Good idea. I'll make sure to start playing with my cats paws today lol. Do you think 10 months is young enough?

  8. lmao I had someone try to tell me declawing my cat would make it depressed because it could no longer defend itself... I told them to go fuck themself

  9. i never declawed my cats. Never even thought about it.

  10. If you want an animal without claws, don't get a cat. Plain and simple. If you're more worried about your couch than your pet, just get a fucking couch. People are retarded sometimes.

  11. I have a dog, he doesn't have to be we clawed to live in my house. Surely you see this is wrong. Sit down. Have a spliff, think about it. Way out of order, that sounds purely like abuse, is this vets who do this?? Sick

  12. I've never heard of declawing dogs? I've never been scratched by a dog lol. But yeah it is wrong claws are part of the package when it comes to getting a cat and it's selfish for a person to try and change that.

  13. Yeah, I'd never get a cat declawed. Its a pretty fucked up practice if you ask me.

My cats are well behaved and know not to tear up our furniture. We trained them from when they were little, and my dad made them a cat tree thing covered in carpet that they can scratch and climb on instead.

  14. i threatened my cat with it all the time in kitten hood lol. he was crazy man, climb alll the way to the top of the screen door you see me running over shooting him with the water sprayer and yelling "you best get down if you wanna keep those claws cat!!!" climbing up the christmas tree and shit, the little puke was a mennace!! but i would never actually go get him declawed, thats fucked up. if it got to that point i would give him away before declawing him if i can't handle it.

  15. Only problem we ever had was my cat (skywalker) scratched at the door frame when she wants to go out kind of a good an bad thing so we put a small strip of carpet on the side of door

  16. Would never declaw my fur beast! Don't they pretty much take out what would be equivalent to our first knuckle?

  17. Fuck declawing and neutering animals. Who are we to play god (just a figure of speech for all you ass holes that's about to bash my opinions).

One of my cats is dumb as a post, but even he was able to figure out that it is OK to scratch the cat tree near the door, but not the furniture. He found his humans tended to "go crazy", yell, and throw things at him if he scratched the furniture! Then we would pick him up, take him over to the tree and show him to scratch it instead! Even for a cat, Grizz is stupid, but he did get the idea. His slightly insane brother caught on right away, but that was before he went nuts (a dog got hold of him and he has brain damage and/or PTSD).

Squirt guns are also effective! But cats NEED a place to scratch, so give them one!

Delightful, unless you like tom cats spraying and making your house smell "less than delightful", you should get your male cats neutered. And there are too many starving cats in the world. A single female cat can turn out 12 or more kittens per year, and roughly half of them will, at 6 to 9 months of age, start turning out their own kittens!  This is why there are "kill shelters" where, if not adopted, the animal is "put down" after a set period of time.

Every kitten and puppy should have a home waiting for it by weaning! The reality is that THOUSANDS of puppies and kittens are dumped in parks, on the sides of back roads, and just about everywhere! They are left to slowly starve, be run over by a car, or be picked off by coyotes!

    Spay or neuter your pets!
