Nirvana Northern Lights and Blue Mystic feminized 600w Soil *2nd Attempt*

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by TeddyB, Mar 25, 2014.

  1. Hi hows it going?

Here is a quick explanation as to what I'm doing with this thread:
Back in Oct 2013 I started a thread and had a couple plants going, same two strains/setup/light and everything, but at the same time things in my life got very hectic. I have two bad knees and a bad back. I smoke to relieve pain. At the same time, unfortunately, I was relying on perscription pain medicine a little too much as well and ended up in rehab. I didn't plan to go, it was a spur of the moment thing where one day just I realized wow I need help with this and made arrangements to leave a couple days later on that week.

Now I got everything squared away and at this point I just smoke, and even with that I go weeks in between buzzes...its about time that I fixed that! When I went away I chopped my plants, there were only 2 like in this thread- one of each strain so no super big loss. The plants I have now are bigger/nicer than the ones I had to kill.

I have 3 Blue Mystic and 2 Northern Lights beans put up for future endevors. I bought 10 seeds of each strain last spring. They are still very healthy and crack open after an 8 hour soak in water, so I am not too worried about using the remaining 5 seeds up before they 'go bad' or anything.

On March 7th, I sprouted 3 seeds to get something growing and catch up due to my time off:

    2 Northern Lights
    1 Blue Mystic

I made a silly mistake and put them in the same washcloth to sprout because I thought it would be okay with so few seeds, but when I was walking down to plant them after they cracked I bumped the plate and the seeds got scrambled up. It turns out that one of the NL ended up cracking open and dying, I am now 99% sure that I do have a Blue Mystic plant because of comparisons on how it looks compared to my past couple grows of it, also there is a mutated off center branch node that all the other Blue Mystic plants had, and the suggestion of Punchreba who had just grown out some Blue Mystic (thanks!) on the old thread. I was trying to keep it going but it was just too jumbled and confusing, really...so here is the thread just for this effort.

My setup is still the same: 600w MH to be switched to a 600w HPS in soil using a secret but not so complex soil mix. I like the plants to do most of the heavy lifting, I don't believe in giving plants crazy nutes because the bud smokes and tastes much better when it is mostly natural. I have mixed in some blood meal, bone meal, have some fish emulsion handy incase they need a quick shot of N but haven't used any yet, and I have some organic food for when flowering comes along.

The plants are getting bigger by the day, growing nicely and look happy so far.

This is my first order of feminized seed I've ever grown out, and honestly I like not having to pull males but don't like the hermie factor. None of the Northern Lights have went hermie though, so that is a good thing. I grew a couple amazing outdoor plants this past summer, and the smoke was some of the best I've ever made.

First two pics is the Northern Lights. She has a heck of a wingspan, being much more broad than she is tall. I like the looks of her so far, and I just started LST'ing her today so that the lower branches get nice and bushy so I can snip some clones in a couple weeks.

Second two pics is the Blue Mystic. She looks just like all the rest of my Mystics, except she doesn't have any major leaf mutations(yet). Hopefully she won't hermie like the rest have so far. I'm still seeking that perfect mom that won't end up growing nuts and seed up all my girls. I love this strain A LOT, but I am thinking maybe it is these feminized seeds as to why I keep getting hermies. Next time I buy this strain I am thinking go with regular seed.

Last two pictures are group shots. As you can see, I've had some moisture problems in my grow space. I have taken a few steps to correct that, so hopefully I won't have Noah's flood going on down my basement this spring like last year. I also keep a humidifier running and have a fan that breezes past the girls all day as well.

I plan on building a flower area in the basement, and keeping a clone rooting station upstairs after I get a few snips off these two girls. I would like to get some clones ready to place outdoors this summer in addition to these indoors.

I will update every week or so with some new pics and I am happy to have this going again. I don't have any quality smoke atm and I will be happy when these girls are done. I like to cure my smoke for 3 months, it really makes the Blue Mystic amazing. The NL I can get away with not curing so long, maybe 2 months. After the NL I grew outdoors this past summer (sorry didn't document it on this site or any other for that matter), I am really excited about the strain again because I was VERY surprised with how she turned out in a pleasant way!

  2. I cant believe i didnt keep mine going! It scares me that there have been issues with BM. I just have to hope one of my other 4seeds left from the order back in september from nirvana is just as wonderful as the first one i popped! Lesson learrned for me.

  3. All my plants have had some strange mutations so far, this one I have going now only has the one branch node that looks kind of conjoined with the main stem so nothing too bad so far. Usually about the time I start to flower I get some funky leaf growth at the preflower spots on BM, and then usually a couple ball sacks.

Maybe it is just this batch of seeds I have? Maybe it isn't something that could affect all Blue Mystic feminized seeds. It could even be my soil or something, i don't know but I do love smoking this stuff so I am going to keep at it until I find a good mom that doesn't have a whole lot of strange going on with her. At first I thought I had a light leak, but I made sure it wasn't that and still had problems the second run inside with it. I'll figure something out here and come out with some top notch smoke again. I just hope I don't have to chop it early again because it gets seeded.

  4. This is just a quick peek at how fast the plants are growing. 3 Days ago is when I took the first pics in this thread, now here are some pics from today.

Blue Mystic: pics 1 and 2

Northern Lights: pics 3 and 4 (plant is starting to be bent and trained for a SCROG grow)

Last 2 are group shots that show how close together the two plants are in size.

I am excited to see them growing, they are steadily moving right along.

  5. They're looking very healthy, B. Mine have yet to reach that size. I'll be keeping an eye out on your journal.

  7. Thanks a lot guys, I love these two strains a lot. I'm happy because the NL seems to be the pheno I was looking for the past year...short with lots of nodes packed in a small space. Both of these plants are growing at the same pace, 7 nodes tall. I am starting to LST the NL, the BM will be left as it is because the couple I did FIM inside didn't produce any more smoke than the couple that I let grow straight up by themselves.

  8. I was swapping out tables earlier tonight and a CFL light ended up dropping right on top of my NL girl. I stood her back up, some leaves are ripped up and stuff. I hope she's okay, I cut the lower 4 branches to clone just in case though. I really like the looks of this pheno so far I'd hate to lose her forever. I'm down to 2 more NL beans, so out of 8 plants I've grown 1 or 2 died and I had a super runt/mutant (avatar pic) and a couple go on to produce sativa-ish types of plants including the one outside which had some grade A++ smoke on it. I'm stressing a little bit now but all I can do is make her comfortable and hope for the best. The main stem didn't break, but I'm sure some roots were damaged.

    On a lighter note:

I always thought that Blue Mystic was very very similar to Northern Lights, just because of the neutral odor the plants all have (neither one has much of an odor unless you touch the plant or rub the stem in veg). Tonight I was just reading up on BM as much as I could and I came across something very interesting!

I read that BM might be (Blue berry x Northern Lights) x (Blue berry x Northern Lights)! That makes all the sense in the world, really. Both plants are very similar in appearance (except for the Mystic is more stretched out with much farther spaces between nodes), smell, the leaves on both of my current plants aren't even that far off. The only thing that doesn't seem too much like Northern Lights is the yield. I haven't got a mass producing Mystic yet.

  9. The light fell on the NL plant about 2 hrs ago, and I immediately straightened out the plant and fed her some very weak (barely even cloudy) fish emulsion (5-0-0). It seems that did the trick, she doesn't look all that different except for a couple leaves look a bit more rough and ragged. I hope vertical growth doesn't grind to a hault and the Blue Mystic blows past her in height, they were both of very similar size and it was easy for me to keep the light in a spot where they were getting equal amounts of light.

Whew, think I dodged a bullet on this screw up for sure! It could have got very bad real quick!

It all started when I was all stoned up and realized that the table both plants were on wasn't very stable and the legs were about to give way and drop both my girls on the floor. The 5-gal buckets are heavy enough on their own plus all the water weight from a nice watering session earlier made the legs creak when I bumped the table.

I was in the process of setting the plants on the floor off to the side while I swapped out tables when a cord for the CFL lamp I used to germinate the seeds got tangled around the bucket handle and it got yanked straight down on top of my girl! She got smooshed like a pancake and was laying flat on the ground! I thought she was a goner for sure. Good thing I started LST'ing her today because if not her main stem would have got flattened.

    Always something, I tell ya...

    Update for the week:

NL is fine. She developed a thick knot down at the base of her main stem, but she is still growing and looks healthy.

BM is doing great, this strain stetches a lot more than NL does. NL is very compact where the BM is more spread out, the total difference in height is only a couple inches though so the light is hitting them both just fine.

All 4 of the NL clones I took when the light fell on the plant have died and I took 4 BM clones recently.

    Going to take pics now

On a side note, two people in my life passed away on Sunday in unrelated incidents. It is pretty sad, life is short. I haven't been getting much sleep lately...a lot weighs on my mind.

  11. Blue Mystic is first, then NL, then 2 group shots.

    Growing up healthy so far.

  12. Today is the big day, plants are both over 12 inches, showing preflowers, and have 10 branches so the light has been turned off. Next time the light comes on it will be the HPS shining its 12 hours of light on the girls! I haven't really LST'd or SCROG'ed these ones like I wanted to...I just want to start producing some bud to smoke on while I do something fancy with some clones next run. I have 4 Blue Mystic clones starting to root now, and I am going to snip a few branches off the NL to try to root those ones again. Both plants have 10 branches, they should have 14 but I snipped the four lowest branches off each plant. I have been bending them at the tops and moving around leaves so the branches get some light, the lowest branches are getting pretty long now and both plants look healthy.

I am already spotting some funky growth on the Blue Mystic, which has me concerned. There is a set of leaves where a preflower should be, female plants don't have leaves where the preflowers grow. There are a few leaves on a small stem. Females don't grow small stems where the preflowers grow. Last couple times indoors this is the spot where the BM's turned hermie, so I am going to have to keep a really good eye on what happens this time. I don't want to have to end things early again because of tiny seeds popping up here and there.

If the Blue Mystic grows even one ball sac the she-male is gone! It sucks because BM is the sweetest looking strain I've yet to come across, and every one I've taken to flower has done this. I was thinking of maybe cutting this preflower growth off and stopping the problem before it starts, but I am worried that if I do that a ball might pop up somewhere else that I can't see and seed everything up.

  13. I was up all night making my flowering station, I took an above the ground pool cover and cut it up into pieces. Then I lined my ceiling with some long nails and hung the sheets of tarp up, making a quarter of my basement into a nice big space for the plants, fans/dehumidifiers, and all my other grow gear. It looks better than last couple runs inside, before I just hung the tarp up in a corner without cutting it to size and it looked like crap. My next basement project will consist of constructing a cloning/veg station. For now the 4 Mystic clones are in a spare closet with a few CFL bulbs, they will be safe in there until I get a space set up for them downstairs and they seem healthy so far. I haven't had any BM clones die yet, I think that the NL clones I took when the light fell on the plant died because I wasn't really ready to take clones yet and I didn't really have anywhere to put them at the time. I am prepared now, and tonight or tomorrow I will be snipping about 4 NL branches off to give it another go.

A funny thing happened earlier this morning- I was just thinking I need to buy some new dirt for when the clones need transplanted, and then I looked outside right when a big truck was dropping off a huge load of dirt for the utility company that just replaced a gas line down my entire street. This is the blackest, richest dirt I have ever seen before. The only drawback with the dirt is that it is really thick and heavy, but hey that's what they make Perlite and other soil lighteners for. As soon as the guys got done fixing up my yard I went out and filled a 5-gal bucket lol. They pretty much saved me a trip to the store and a few bucks, so rock on. I sure lucked out and got the dirt at the right moment. I will probably wait until I need it and then prepare it for inside use.

Back on the inside, the girls are loving the HPS light so far. Overall, I am really pleased with the plants other than the uncertainty about Blue Mystic's true sexuality. I guess time will tell if this one hermies like the rest. I'd be upset if every single seed from 2 feminized 5-packs went hermie on me...I have 3 more tries for that perfect girl sitting in my fridge but I hope I don't need to use them quite yet. When I spotted that familiar set of leaves on the small stem where the preflower should be, I was pretty upset because I know that usually the ball sacs come after that. If she sprouts nuts I am gonna be pissed.

The Northern Lights looks great so far, it reminds me a whole lot of the last Nirvana Hindu Kush plant I grew back in 2008, she's nice and short with really tight nodes. There is a node every half inch or so going up the main stem, which is really compact even for NL. The last 2 I grew outside last summer were sativa-ish phenotypes, even the bud formation looked more sativa....fluffy and small...but wow the taste and potency were top notch. I never had NL buds that had such a skunky smell and taste, but it was really pleasant and tasted very unique. Hopefully this new girl kicks out a nice long fat cola on top and has some sweet skunky smoke like the outdoors girls did. Her leaves look really really Indica, they are super huge, the leaflets on the fan blades are really long and are a lot bigger than my open hand. The main stem is getting really thick, I think part of the reason is the injury that the main stem had when the light fell on it, so now it is getting thick as it heals up the damaged tissue. There is a knot in the stem right at the base of the plant where it goes into the ground.

Blue Mystic looks like every other Blue Mystic I've grown so far, this plant looks primative to me..like a throwback straight out of the stone age when Cannabis Indica first evolved. I can imagine a caveman discovering this strain growing in the jungle, taking it back to his settlement, and sitting back at night huddled around the fire passing a big hooter of these nuggets around as they tell hunting stories and go on a spiritual journey to get closer to God. This strain doesn't really have tight nodes spaced together, heck there are placed on the main stem where there isn't a node for about 4 inches! This plant is like a bean pole, really tall with a thick main stalk. The strain is really stable when it comes to the main traits, unfortunately for me a main trait that they have shown so far has been hermaphroditism. Since I haven't really read about anyone else having this issue with every single seed from their order, I am leaning on this being more of a 'bad batch' problem rather than an overall strain problem. Hey, ya can't win em all. I have got some killer smoke from Blue Mystic from the 5 seeds that have produced bud so far, it really blew me away and gets me stoned instantly....kind of like marijuana crack...I just hope I can make one of these plants actually finish up instead of chopping them early when I spot a bunch of baby seeds being produced inside the flowers.

When I saw that seeds were starting to form on my last couple grows of Blue Mystic, I just called it and chopped them down. I figured that a decent amount of barely seeded bud was better than a bunch of heavily seeded bud. I really want to see how the strain does when they are allowed to finish. I can't imagine how great the bud is going to be, it has tons of potential.

  16. I watched her hit puberty ..just beauty lol

  17. Wow, sweet looking bud ya got there punchreba!

Yeah, I finally got some good pictures of the anomily that grows on each and every feminized Blue Mystic seed I've sprouted.

A year ago when it first happened, I thought it was just a light leak. I fixed that. Then I kept seeing it happen every time I grew one out and made a list of probable causes and fixed them. Now it happened again. I'm just thinking bad batch because I got the first 5- pack and immediately ordered another so chances are they are from the same plant.

I bet if I ordered some Blue Mystic beans tomorrow they would all be fine, which I think I'm going to have to do anyway because growing this batch isn't working out.

Here is a group shot from my phone, a group shot after I bent them around so the branches get light with the good camera, and a few pics of the leaves in question.

On the last pic you can see the stem structure of the growth. Females don't have stems where preflowers grow. In the other pics you can see that there are small green leaves. Females don't grow leaves at the preflower sites.

I noticed on all the other Mystics I have grown that the ball sacs almost always come from these spots, would it be safe to just remove them? I haven't found an actual ball sac on any of the other buds so it is an idea anyway.

At first I thought the strange preflower growth was just a typical Blueberry mutation, because when the first couple plants sprouted they had some funky leaves going on and sometimes they had conjoined leaves like the pic below from Halloween... Don't mind the little yellow dots on the leaves, this is a Blue Mystic that I could not finish up because I unexpectedly checked myself into rehab in November.

  19. On a side note, 4 Blue Mystic clones are doing just fine and I took 2 NL clones. I really like the looks of this NL phenotype so far...nice and short yet reallllly wide with great big leaves. She's a beauty, as long as I can keep her a virgin everything will be A-OK lol

  20. The leafs merging is nothing. Happens alot on early sprouts imo... Those growths are a bit strange. I will have to go look at some old pics of mine...
