So today In government class we had a simulation. An Iranian naval vessel attacked a US patrol boat in the Persian gulf and sunk it, killing 30. (The gulf contains 715 billion barrels of oil reserves representing over half the worlds oil reserves which can easily be blocked) My team was assigned the department of defense. Other teams were intelligence, Secretary of State , department of energy, state department etc. We decide to go to war with Iran. I'm over here like what in the actual fuck. It was agreed ACROSS THE BOARD TO GO TO WAR. Irans allies include china and Russia War around tankers could cause massive oil spills and the increase of gas prices China trading interests could be interrupted Iran could attack Israel , our ally and no one in the Middle East likes Israel already , so that can cause other middle eastern countries to attack our ally. Military spending would increase and were already in unbelievable debt. Russia could get involved , turkey could get involed etc. Why do we feel like the only way to solve problems is by bombing and war? Could we not have maybe come to an agreement or diffuse a misunderstanding with Iran? The odds of this war were not in our favor, how many allies does America think it really has after spying on them?. But to my classmates it didn't matter. I bet you ten years into that failed war and after trillions of spending and gas prices raised they would change their minds right? Makes me sick (puke)
Because these are the humans. Actually this is nature, you will find spices fighting and pushing other animals over territory and resources all the time as the ecological system evolves. Because in your scenario, Iran would not attack and kill 30 americans for nothing, for everything theres a reason.. And in a case that 30 families in america are now destroyed, the government cannot let the spirit of the country to take a hit. The humans are always pushing to evolve and be stronger, faster, prettier.. This is life, nature, this is in our genes. So for 30 human lives , we sacrifice hundreds possibly thousands more , and thousands on the enemy side. We sacrifice more money we don't have , we dig ourselves into a hole, we go into war with extreme uncertainty with numerous factors against as that would affect the well being of Americans In the US. All To prove a point. It just really gets to me how stupid that logic is. (Puke)
Yeap, i understand you. But for the government its not only 30 lives, its a door thats now open to many more lives that will be killed if the usa would not do anything. Very simple. Understandable but can't we just send intelligence to figure out the intentions of the Iranian government and have a conversation with them? I doubt the American people would be on board with another war. We're sick of it. Not to mention Hezbollah will take this as a opportunity to strike if we do go to war. We can say what if or they might all day. But the facts are against us. Shouldn't that matter? I think there are many assumptions made by your group or you because you have no motive behind Iran's attack so how the hell can you determine what the appropriate response should be? Also why do you think all Americans have problems? Are you smarter than America? How'd your classmates respond? Furthermore, they're students that want to learn more about policy-making and influences around the world, so why do you think they properly represent every American and why do you hate them so much? I hope you at least voiced your ideas to them before coming to the internet and venting.
I can't type the whole assignment up on here , but yes I did voice my opinions. I never said do nothing, I said open conversation with the Iranian government rather then strike first ask later. Reconnaissance and intelligence agencies can look into the reason behind the attack and I do agree it's hard to figure out what to do when we don't know why it was done. I don't think all Americans have problems, it's just a general topic title I made , calm your tits. I just had more confidence in my team , I expected more than "bomb them" especially with all the odds against us. I mentioned how my classmates responded already, also.

Well that's my teachers fault for giving us a lacking simulation. Lol Maybe the us patrol boat was in Iranian territory and that's why the naval boat acted.

Yes. I do wish I spoke more. But when we were broken up in teams conversing with one another I mentioned all of the above. When we had to present our opinions as a group to chief of staff and the president. I let them take over. Majority rules I guess.

Well for one, the simulation was an attack, so a retaliation is always expected. Just because I am anti-war doesn't mean I oppose it across the board. If we must go to war for a legitimate cause, I will be down to fight. If another country were going to invade my country and attacks us, I would most definitely join the cause. As for the simulator, it's expected that once attacked, we would go to war. It's not a matter of how many lives lost but the fact that they attacked us. It would at least warrant an attack in return.
