Given Up Cable TV

Discussion in 'The Great Indoors' started by Trippers, Mar 8, 2014.

  1. So I gave up using cable TV Feb 1st. First month wasn't so bad. I do have Netflix.

Besides Netflix, are there any good websites for watching TV shows, movies, live sports etc?

  3. If you know the name of the show and network it plays on, just go to their website and look for it there.

  4. Justin.tv

    Primewire.ag

Roku Device, that hosts Netflix and Hulu and has a bunch of other TV Apps.

  5. I love Project Free TV.
Hulu is pretty decent. I pay for Hulu+ to get access to more shows and older seasons BUT I hate that I still have to see ads.
Netflix is alright in my book. I'm currently using someone else's account.
http://www.watchseries-online.eu/  is okay. I find the speed of the videos to be pretty slow. I have fast internet service so I know it's not me.

Some networks are actually pretty cool about offering full episodes of their shows. You just have to watch the episode before the next one comes out, in many cases.
I haven't had cable in about 2 years. I don't miss it one bit. When I'm at someone else's place or visit a hotel sure I enjoy the cable but I'm content to keep more money in my pocket for other things.

Push come to shove, I go to Amazon and iTunes to buy an episode of a show I really love.

I'm not sure of where you live OP but if you have a great public library system in your city, check them out.
I used to be spoiled by my old library system. They had TONS of movies and tv shows on DVD.

  6. Fuck cable for 60 bucks a month. Im happy with netflix for 8 bucks

  14.
yeah who needs TV nowadays really when it's all free on the net. I just downloaded movies from the 50's and 60's that you cant even find on netflix. I like nexflix but they need more of the older, classic good movies. And the screen quality isn't that great on some movies

  15. I haven't had cable for 2 years. I post for high speed (100mbs). I use Netflix, Hulu, HBO go and various streaming sites. No problem

Been without for just about a year myself. I've dropped everything but internet service (lack of other options)... I'm anxious to drop their internet too when I have another viable option.

I use Amazon Prime Instant Video, Netflix and a good digital HD antenna for local channels.

I've tried Hulu+ for a couple months and it was only $5-6/month at the time. It's not bad for the price as long as you have a quality internet service and you don't mind an advertisement at the beginning of each video (20 seconds or so I think). However, unlike Netflix and Amazon, Hulu+ offer more current TV episodes as part of their subscription. If you've never tried them, then you can try their free version to get a little idea of what to expect without additional expense.

Sidebar: Netflix  (meant Amazon Instant Video) actually has some current episodes available as well, but there's an additional charge for each episode.

My service provider seriously sucks ass and doesn't have "quality" signal. So, Hulu+ isn't a good fit for my situation. And, yes, the ass crack cable/internet provider I'm referring to is Concast/Xfinity. (yes, intentional misspelling).

Isn't it peculiar how internet service providers never mention in the advertising as to the quality of their internet service? But, how "fast" it can potentially be? And how they're now trying to sell consumers on the idea that "Self Service" is a feature and/or benefit? This kills me, it's like the final "poke in the eye" (IMHO).

Note: One trend I've noticed within 2014 is that more larger cable tv stations have started requiring a subscription from a valid cable or dish provider before you can stream them. For example, tru.tv website used to offer full length episodes free online... now they force you to login via your cable provider page. No all of them yet... but with the war of streaming services vs cable/dish companies who really knows how things will end up... that on top of the internet neutrality ordeal. I'm guessing anything can happen at this point

Aight, I'm done with the cable bashing... for now. :)

Just say "NO!", we all need to cut the cable! :metal:

  17. ^this^
I cut cable out last year and couldnt be happier! It sucks paying too much for internet now though but im still saving 60 beans a month. With roku you cant get free hulu just hulu+ hulu has comedy central shows like @midnight,tosh & key and peele a day or week after airdate. Imho for shows hulu beats netflix. I think netflix takes the movie category.
Just got a roku 2 for xmas headphones in the remote is the bomb for late night tv in bed no more cranky girlfriend!

  18. I try n stay away from cable....other than sports n movies.....cable waste of time IMO

  19. Never paid for cable or satellite TV in my life, parents never did either. I don't really watch a whole lot of television or movies, but when I do (cue Dos Equis meme), it's all on a shared Netflix account. If we can't find what we want there, we start searching for it streamed on Google, Reddit, etc. It's a fraction of the price of paying for cable, not even taking into account that many people pay for cable as well as buying DVDs/Blu Rays and/or going to movie theaters

In a couple decades, cable will be a thing of the past. Good riddance.

  20. I stopped watching tv a couple years ago. I don't like all the advertising and pushing shit on me that I don't want to see. I torrent/stream all of the shows I would want to watch, and I can watch them at any pace. I can binge watch a whole series if I want to. TV just seems outdated and unnecessary these days.
