    hello.

A looonnng time ago, I made a thread about using a Hakko to avoid pollution when igniting a bowl. Subsequently, people took exception to my claim.

Well, stubborn, old me....I kept using my Hakko all the same. :)

Yesterday, I moved some stuff around while straightening up for some relatives who are visiting, and I put the Hakko away.

I didn't have it and so I (momentarily) reverted back to using a ......*gulp*....Bic lighter! -the very thing I had warned people not to use!

And in the process of using the lighter vs. the Hakko over the last day, I noticed two distinct things:

1.) The ashes left in the bowls that were lit with the Bic, were white, while the ashes left in the bowl of  Hakko are much darker gray.

2.). The residue that was deposited on the inside of the clear glass bubbler, when a Bic was used, was black and occluded the clear glass in only a few snaps, while those bowls lit with the Hakko, left an amber-colored resin/film on the glass -not quite cherry oil, but somewhere in-between.

Whatever is being deposited on the glass, in either case, is also what's making it through to your lungs. I suspect that the black, sooty smoke produced by ignition from a direct flame -and particularly a butane lighter flame- not only tastes worse, but is also making smoke that is blacker and more occluding to your lungs. Mind you, that's just my suspicion. I am not a doctor....more of a mad scientist! hehe heheh.....muwahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....*cough*

I also use a vaporizer (Da Buddha) so I understand all that. But, I prefer smoking flowers to vaporizing them. I prefer to vaporize oil and bubble hash...but I like smoking flowers. And so, I think, once again, that flameless lighters are SOOOOooOOOOOooooOOOOoo much better!

I sinned, but now I am back to the Hakko...or waiting for that sunny day to do some solar hits....but no more flames.....unless like Armageddon comes and only the Bics survive! ;)

    -just sayin'! ;)

Which model hakko did you get? I want one but the only one I can find is the $20 cordless ones from home depot & I'm not sure if that will work

    Who Dat!

  4. My smoke location is a balcony. It DOES have a power outlet hmmmmm.  I see my future.

  5. The ash color might have something to do with the temperature at which your weed is burning, as well as the resin. The flame might be hot enough to burn most of the organic compounds in the weed, whereas the Hakko may only be able to vaporize the THC and burn some material. So the soot you're seeing may very well be from the weed.

You can get them at Fry's

  7. Yep. That's what I thought, too….BUT, I am going to try a round of solar hits and see if the same thing happens. I suspect that the sunbeam, even though much hotter than a flame, will leave a cleaner deposit than the Bic.

  8. A soldering iron -one with a specific ceramic heating element inside a housing that is designed to be unscrewed so that the internal element is exposed. That ceramic element gets cherry-red hot and produces NO pollution. The hits lit with them are noticeably tastier and, as I have reported, seem to create a different kind of ash. Yes, it's still combustion….but apparently, not all combustion is created equal! :)

  9. I bought an Herb Iron two years ago, and it's one of my best smoking investments I've made. I picked it up from my lhs for 70 bucks. Kind of steep, but I prefer the quick press button, which makes for a safer smoke. It cools down, and heats up rather quickly as well. Five to seven second press, and your bowl is ready to be lit. They actually have a vape attachment that screws over the ceramic tip, it's glass, and you place it on your bud and rotate, amazing vape bong hits.

I've used a hakko before, and looked into getting one back when I was looking. The price is definitely nice, but I just didn't trust myself with a full blown soldering iron ha.
