Colonization of other planets

Discussion in 'Science and Nature' started by loki22669, Mar 2, 2014.

  1. Great idea right? More resources, new opportunities, more liveable land, and endless possibilities! Hard to accomplish though, I will admit.

  2. I dont think we should be spending tax money on it, but if private groups want to do it thats cool.

I personally will die on earth.

  3. Understandable fella, I think NASA is a waste of time myself. But the idea goes along with them I suppose. I pay taxes when possible and I feel where your coming from. But I just think the planet is too crowded already, that's gonna cause problems eventually.

  4. Arent there a lot of private companies starting the process of going to space though?  I know a private company is about to bring supplies to the international space station. And some are even offering vacations to space for millions of dollars..

I read that private companies are doing more for science than the government.

I heard that space is pretty big and cold, and spaceships are expensive. And that planets are far away.

  7. How about better control and management of our current resources?
Reconstruction of society and the land to grow more and healthier food for all of humanity.
There are infinite possibilities here as well.
Why spend so much energy when we need to fix this earth first?

It will be necessary at some point, even with a 'sustainable society' the earths climate will eventually change back into another ice age or another giant event will happen.

The trial and error stages aren't going to be pretty, and may even stop further advancement before it even begins.
That's even if we are still a civilized, technological society and haven't sent ourselves back in time with wars and such.

  9. The ocean is big and cold. And you might fall off if you sail too far. Also ships are expensive!

  10. Earth is doomed. Even if humans dont destroy it the sun will go red giant and engulf us, then fizzle out and we will be eternally frozen.

You are right. Space flight is nessesary to future human survival

EDIT : there's no good jesting response for this.

Rest assured, I wasnt advocating against space flight.

I do believe because of the millions of chances that there is life out there many other planets have already explored and found other life and that there is a galactic federation that we have not become part of because we have not been discovered.

I say we should use all our money on space exploration because one day shit can hit the fan.

  13. I know. I was jesting to your response. Figured this was a humor thread

Colonizing planets will definetaly be necessary at some point if humans are to survive.

Supervolcanos, asteroids, the sun, and I'm sure plenty more things could end us.

Isn't that supervolcano under Yellowstone believed to be overdue already?

I'd ate to be around the US when that happens :p

  15. youd hate to be on the planet if that happens

Well yeah, but earlier humans survived the last one and they had a much smaller population then, and had poor technology to help them out as far as warmth.

It would wipe the vast majority of us out, but I'm sure a tiny portion couldl make it

  17. Nah, wasn't supposed to be a humor thread, more of a hypothetical one. This would all happen far in the future for we don't currently have the technology to make it practical now. But one day, wouldn't it be neat to have McDonald's on the moon or mars? Lol

  18. Furthermore, yeah we gotta get shit straight on this blue n green ball I call hell first. World peace, better management of current resources, yadda, yadda. But the colonization of other planets just makes me think we'd be a more prosperous species.

  19. As of right now there will probably be the beginning of a colonization of Mars by 2024

  20. We should instead send half of our salty ocean to space. Then we'd have more land. Can't we build a hose between the pacific and the moon? cover the moon in ice. but the hose would probably get tangled around earth and kill 100 million chinamen. that would solve problem nr 2 tho
