The only thing that scares me about the whole thing is leaving 23 years of what I spent building up, friends, family, life and what not behind. I know I will make new friends on the road, but it scares me knowing everyone you knew is left in the past. You only remain as a fragment of their memory which will slowly dwindle and disappear over time.
i did something similar, but lived in my car. as long as you don't mind "alone time", it can be pretty cool.

I hitched from Memphis, Tn to SF, down the Cali coast to LA and back again. This was in 1969, most anyone would give you a ride back then and you didn't have to worry about being robbed or beaten up. Today is a different story, my advice, get yourself a backpack and set a destination a couple hundred miles away and hitch there and back..... if you get there and back tell us how the experience was....Good Luck.
i left little rock arkansas for my current town in north carolina. had $1200, some clothes, my car, and my laptop thats it. put all of it in my car and just stopped here. i was tired of driving, stopped in this town because it seemed ok. i arrived on March 8th, 2012. almost been here 2 years now. and after a few weeks of living in my car (which was not so bad at all) i got a job and moved in with a girl. we moved 2 times since. hoping i can do it again after i save up some money again, but this time i'm aiming for colorado or washington for obvious reasons haaha.
