Ever feel your brain changing?

Discussion in 'Science and Nature' started by syrupsarah, Feb 27, 2014.

  1. I quit taking antidepressants 3 months ago and I think I can feel my brain progressing and getting "smarter". It's hard to explain but I feel like I'm more able to communicate directly and effectively, I am able to find reason in most situations, more so than ever before. Do you think it's because I'm off the medicine and my brain isn't being clouded by synthetic hormones and what not? Or do you think it's because I am 18 and the front part of my brain is starting to function? Like I'm starting to become a mental adult.

I do have the 5 tho

  2. Aw your brain is growin' up!

But forreal you're brain is developing more and you're learning more and putting pieces and parts together in your brain in order to make sense of what you encounter. It's natural, and some people's interpretations are more true than others.

  3. tbh it's weird as fuck because it's like I can feel myself changing. Like I wasn't this mentally advanced 3 months ago lol

  4. check out a video/course on developmental psychology and sociology some very interesting stuff, like feral children.

Look up a case about a feral girl named Genie, fascinating and disturbing stuff

  5. I know what you mean OP it's like i can feel myself getting a little more mature and grown up ya know? I heard our brains rewire themselves in different stages of our lives and i think it's doing that now.

  6. Eat some mushrooms! It's helped me change my perception and to be a more open person haha and also refocus my efforts on stuff that matters!

  7. Antipsychotics are to mentall illness as nyquil is to the flue.

Its just a remedy for symptoms that the industry makes billions off.

Medicine is usually more interested in treatments than cures. Treatments make more money

  8. Is this what say right after they stop taking their meds and go on a killing spree?

  9. Those anti depressants are so fucked up. i have a friend who takes prozac and imo it has completetly destroyed the person he was. now hes just a zombie. he tells me about the " kill yourself " voices in his head. i try to tell him its because of the prozac. its because prozac is an SSRI ( Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor ) witch i did some research on. and yup, turns out this shit hes taking is definetly causing his suicidal thoughts.

  10. Sounds around the same age I started mentally growing up. I think it was 20 for me

  11. Lets just hope it's not on the onset of schizophrenia!

  12. you mean I sound like a serial killer because think my brain is changing lol.

I do have the 5 tho

  13. listen it is definitely what's making him want to kill himself. I was on Zoloft before I quit and I'll tell you this, they fucked up my life. I would panic before going to school and worry myself to the point of puking. I would also walk down the street and frequently imagine throwing myself in front of cars and jumping off bridges. They weren't even thoughts they were like pleasant daydreams. That's why I had to quit

  14. I mean I think I'm okay, for now lol.

  15.
I took SSRI's for 4 years before stopping in November last year, I was on a really low dose 10mg of escitalopram but i still noticed significant changes in my personality for the better after i stopped.  I really didn't realize how much of a zombie they made me into, sure they helped me over come my depression and my anxiety to a lesser extent but I was a different person for 4 years and it wasnt until i stopped that i realize just what it was doing to me.
To anyone who thinks they need SSRI's only take them for the bare minimum in dose and length of treatment because they cause very significant alterations to your personality. Although if you are really really depressed the benefits probably would outweigh the negative effects like not having a full emotional range.

To answer you question OP I think its just the fact that you no longer have a chemical mediating the chemical processes in your brain, but also your brain is very dynamic it is constantly rewiring itself depending on what you do with it,  if you wanna be smarter all you have to do is start learning eventually your brain will wire itself so you think in a more intellectuall manner and thus be a smarter person.

kudos to getting of the antideppresants btw,

  16. prozac is 94% fluoride. fluoride is a neurotoxin.
