Budget DIY stealth grows

  1. Post your homemade grow boxes/rooms here, im currently growing in two small grow boxes made out of cardboard for free. In fact my whole setup cost me about £30 - for two bulbs and an assortment of fittings.

Im looking to get some ideas for how to improve my current setup without paying for anything. I have some ideas about things like odor control, co2 generation, auto mist spray and more that i think i could make myself but would like to look at other peoples ideas and creations first as i usually end up doing things the needlessly complicated way haha.

I wired the lights by cutting up a few 'kettle leads' (pc power cables) and connecting them to some fittings i got off ebay (about £1.50 each). The reflectors are made from energy drink cans - I followed a great tutorial in the GC forums. The fan is a CPU fan wired to a 12v transformer plug. Im thinking of pulling a PSU from an old pc and wiring 8 mini server fans to it, plenty for intakes, exhausts, airflow etc. 1393424318722.jpg 1393424390758.jpg 1393424424820.jpg 1393424453541.jpg 1393424650539.jpg

My other 2 are still in the old box with the 85w 6400k, i need to repot them and put both in a bigger box as soon as i get some more soil and maybe a few more 2700k's (i found about 15 in the shed but only 11w)

So, post your cheap DIY setups here, as well as any homemade dodgy growing equipment. Bonus points for cheapness, originality and danger to health :)

  2. Lmao!!!! Im all in on this one, i like to think of it more as being frugal, haha!!!! Will definetily post some pics of my set-up, with a little description too, this evening(at work). Subbed.

  3. Well i give you this you are growing and its working! Keep it up! i hope the cardboard holds up till u can find a more suitable space for your little girls.

  4. Took a bit, but heres the outside of my box. Just particle board, reflective insulation board lines the inside, couple holes cut out for air, a small fan inside for circulation, a 70 watt hps work light with a reflection shield added on attatched to the box top, a cfl assortment hangs inside the box, total 222 watts, 16180 lumens. Temp control is a quilt wrapped around the box to keep warmth in when cold and then as temps rise, it can be removed. No scrubber, only odor control is from odor disks i take from portapotties at work lol. Total cost, probably $30 and thats just for the cfls. I had everything else. Box, light rigging, and soil are all DYI. Nutes to be used are all free samples, seeds being used this time are freebies and gifts. ^_^

  5. This is my first grow ever. It's not cardboard, but an old broken down mini-fridge. About 1 foot x 1.5 feet. Aside from the initial fridge cost (Which was given to me by my parents years ago for college) I've spent between $30-$50 on this.

The seeds are all bagseed, and the lights are all cfl.

Although no one else has posted in it, I have a grow journal here:

  6. I did at first have a couple of seedlings that died within the first week, which I was attributing to a fungal infection, so I did start this guys in a separate little cardboard box for a couple of days before switching.

  7. That fridge is awesome, i had one that broke but i chucked it out ): am trying to think of what to do for my 2nd grow, has to be super stealthy this time.. was thinking of looking for an old chest of drawers on ebay or something and converting it, but now i might look for a fridge.. people are less likely to be suspicious of humming, light leaks and funny smell coming from a fridge than a dresser lol.

Yea, if you can get a cheap, taller fridge it would be really worth it I think. I also enjoy the door, with the gasket making it relatively air tight (except for the intake and exhaust) i think smell will be easier to control then maybe a wooden chest.

I just wish mine was a LITTLE taller.

  9. Yeah i was thinking the only issue youd run into would be height, your gonna have to lst the shit out of it haha.. topping it might also help

Yea, i'm gonna lst and top it, and scrog it. I might also put a piece of acrylic just under the lights so I don't have to worry about the light burning the leaves, and hopefully it helps with the bushiness if the plants hit it, then start growing to the side to continue to grow.

  14. I like the mini fridge grow box. Cool idea and good luck.

  15. Would installing a carbon filter into a fridge/mini fridge be possible? As far as I know, carbon filters help with the smell, correct?

  16. You are correct concerning the function of a carbon filter.

I'm not sure tbh, im sure you could with some, i think my old minifridge had a fan in the back with a grille over it, technically if you attached a bag of carbon over the fan that would be a carbon filter lol

  17. My PC box, day from an old computer.

Using a spliced fan/USB cord and a lamp dismantled, I advised in my diy thread not to cut lamp wires, but I inevitably had to, but that's it. Just add aluminum foil and a super cheap and easy to do box. Still needs more detailed work, but Ill do that later.

  18. Nice box man, unlucky about the tranparent bit on the case but im sure you can wedge it somewhere hidden. What's the noise like? Ive hear a lot of PC boxes can be quite noisy with the fans, does it sound close enough to an actual PC to leave on somewhere?
