Legalization in Florida

Discussion in 'Marijuana Legalization' started by sometypeofway, Jan 26, 2014.

  1. As a Floridian, I've always known Florida to be a conservative, old Republican state. As a result, there is some pretty strong lobbying against marijuana. However, there's some serious momentum to the current petition to put Medical Marijuana on the 2014 ballot.

I was shocked to see President Obama win Florida, and a recent statistic notes that about 70% of Floridians approve of medical marijuana. Originally, I thought Florida was going to be one of the last states to legalize. Now, however, I am more optimistic that Florida could soon make a great step forward in waking up from is social ass backwardness.

Any Floridians (or anyone for that matter) feel the same way?

  2. My Dad was born in Jacksonville, so I have a emotional stake in this. You guys did good, getting all those signatures on the petitions! :yay:   Now it is time for "Phase 2- Getting the votes!"

The key to getting cannabis legal in Florida, are those conservative old folks! They are starting to figure out that cannabis IS medicine, and can be a rather effective one!  Once you convince them that they can save a bunch of money by growing their own medications, they will get on board- and (unlike all too many of you kids) they WILL be out voting on election day!

So how do we convince them to vote for legalization?   :confused_2:  Why, we educate them using the online news comments! They read those comments- they have the time, they are retired! Here's an article and quote that will get a lot of folks attention!

    Marijuana May Slow Alzheimer's      (news - 2006)   http://www.webmd.com/alzheimers/news/20061006/marijuana-may-slow-alzheimers

“THC blocks an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which speeds the formation of amyloid plaque in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's drugs Aricept and Cognex work by blocking acetylcholinesterase. When tested at DOUBLE the concentration of THC, Aricept blocked plaque formation only 22% as well as THC, and Cognex blocked plaque formation only 7% as well as THC.”

Or maybe you'd want to point out that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer, and that cannabidiol is the "no high", #2 compound in cannabis-

Pot compound seen as tool against cancer      (news – 2012)   http://www.sfgate.com/health/article/Pot-compound-seen-as-tool-against-cancer-3875562.php#page-1

“When McAllister and Desprez exposed the cells to cannabidiol in a petri dish, the cells not only stopped acting "crazy" but they also started to revert to a normal state… The researchers stressed cannabidiol works only on cancer cells that have these high levels of ID-1 and these do not include all cancerous tumors but, rather, aggressive, metastatic cells. But they've found such high levels in leukemia, colorectal, pancreatic, lung, ovarian, brain and other cancers.”

Or you could use this from PubMed-

An ultra-low dose of tetrahydrocannabinol provides cardioprotection.    (abst – 2013) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23537701

"CONCLUSION: A single ultra low dose of THC before ischemia is a safe and effective treatment that reduces myocardial ischemic damage."

You have to make it personal for them!  They need to see how cannabis can help THEM! Stress how you don't need to smoke it- vaporizers ("like a big e-cigarette"), tinctures are just high proof booze and cannabis, and tell them about the recipes that "BadKittySmiles" has posted up at GC- even brownies get boring after a while!

  3. Yup im from Miami and the vote in South Beach passed, the vote in novemver is expected to pass as well and some of those conservatives have been changing their views on marijuana recently.

I think people are starting to realize that not only is weed alot safer and better than other medicine, and treats certain things which no other medication can, but also that they are spending billions putting away people for smoking weed when instead they could be using that money for other more important issues and making a lot of extra money on the ridiculous weed taxes which most states have.

Alcohol has no recognized medicinal purposes anymore and causes thousands of direct and indirect deaths every year yet its perfectly legal to go buy a bottle and get piss drunk

  4. They got the votes, but doesn't the court still need to approve the wording?  This is their chance to shoot it down, as they can decide if the wording is too vague or misleading.  Of course they limit the language of citizen proposed laws to only 75 words, so the wording is limited.  This being said I think Florida still has a good chance to allow medical.  Someone told me that it might be limited to more medically valid means or consumption like in tinctures or oils.  I have no idea if this is true or not, and it would be less than ideal but even that would be a great first step.

  5. I hope you are all staying on top of it. Make sure you get a personal grow clause. Because they screwed us here in Delaware because people got lazy. And once it is done, they will do very little to change it. And they have set it up for ONE vendor only. No competition.
Good luck. Write your representatives daily.

  6. Unfortunately, I think they're willing to smile and take whatever they get and it won't include personal cultivation.

  7. Vote it down if that happens. Don't settle for less or that is all you will get. Guaranteed! They lied to us to get theirs through here. It isn't about compassion or personal choice. It is about monopolizing the market forcing you to buy from them. Taxation without representation is all it is.

  8. Looks like right now is the most important time so far to join in on the campaign here in florida..... I can't grasp how so much of the public is still against legalizing for at least medical. 70% of americans are on at least one prescription already. None of those are as useful as cannabis!

  9. Can't vote it down unfortunately, since I've lived in CA the past 50 years.  Been warning folks in the other states - you want it bad, you get it bad.  Now we have a "legal" recreation state (WA) where you can't grow and another "legal" state selling weed at double the street price. FL will vote itself right into a knot, most of the recent med states don't allow cultivation, and the boys in TX are happier than shit that Perry said he would start working on "decriminalization" (the you go to rehab and pay for it or you go to jail type of decriminalization).  The people are being played.

"You want it bad, you get it bad!" I like that. That is what they did here in Delaware. I was against it, told everybody not to vote for it and let's do it right. Nope! They wanted it too bad.... They got it! Too bad, I'm planning on moving to Colorado, at least I'll be able to grow my own. And with GC as a resource I'll be fine with it. They are only allowing one vendor. And I hear that a company spent a million to have a business plan drawn up that the state requirements were modeled after. They also have an area, and a building with a ton of work and money dumped into it.... On the property of one of the representatives who voted against it! .... Now tell me, what business would invest that much capital into something that is still in the CLOSED bidding process? Fucking politics are atrocious here. I call it Hazzard county. We have all the players but the Duke boys, Daisy, Cooter and Uncle Jesse... that leaves Boss Hawg, Roscoe and Enis.... fearjar is getting the hell out while the bridge is still intact. And if I'm late for that? YeeHaw..., I'll jump the fucker.. LOL

  11. I am very excited that it is going up for vote. I was worried Florida wouldn't mobilize enough. A whole new battle will start though to win over this Republican state. Florida, combined with California, could really make some sway in the next election.

Honestly, I believe the president that promises to legalize marijuana, for medicinal or recreational use, will win the next election/

  12. Well first of all sir... Obama didn't win florida, united for care and the volunteers did. We did, fuck him. He's just coming out with pro marijuana statements here and there so it doesn't looks crazy when he pulls in all that tax money with his greedy little drone controlling hands.

  13. Here in Ocala sinned a petition and can't wait to be able to vote for it! I'm positive it will be passedSent from my SPH-L710 using Grasscity Forum mobile app

  14. As pf yesterday the Fl Supreme Court officially approved the wording.

We are officially on the ballot :yay:

Im not pleased with the lack of protectiom for patients from job termination or lack of personal grows, but if we dont make this one pass, itll be years before we get another chance, so we have to take what we can get.

First of all, I was referring to the presidential election when I said Obama won Florida. Secondly, Obama does not in anyway personally gain from taxing marijuana.

  17. I agree. I am pretty surprised that Florida being a republican state is the first to take the reigns as a whole for legalization. Other southern/republican states will soon follow.

  18. Actually were a swing state, and because of our size, if we adopt pro-marijuana stances, politicians will take notice.

Florida is quite possibly the most important domino in the legalizatiom effort

  19. oh, I had no idea... well, that's a great thing!
