Alright everyone!  Getting going with my second GC journal.  My first one ended less than spectacularly (though I did harvest some smoke-able bud).  Hopefully this one will go the whole way (I bought a new timer)!  Since last grow I switched from FFOF and "bottled organics" to living soil organics, and also I created a veg space so I can take clones and get a semi-perpetual grow goin on.  With the help of many people on here, but most notably Jerry, I was able to construct my soil, and get prepped for this grow, so many thanks to everyone who contributed!

    Equipment:
    2x2x5.5 Secret Jardin DR60
400W MH/HPS convertible light and ballast
    2' T5 Fluorescent lamp
6" Inline Fan 334 cu. ft. per min.
    4" x 14" Fan / Carbon Filter Combo
\nSoil Mix: 1.9 cu. ft. total
.7 cu. ft. Coast of Maine Bar Harbor Potting Soil (which has some perlite in it already)
.4 cu. ft. Coast of Maine Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost
.2 cu. ft. Nature's Solution EWC
    .3 cu. ft. Rice Hulls
    .3 cu. ft. Perlite
    \nAmendments:
    1.3 cups Espoma BioTone
    1 cup Kelp Meal
    .5 cup Alfalfa Meal
    .75 cups Neem Cake
    .5 cups Sul-Po-Mag
    .5 cups Oyster Shell Flour
    5 cups Glacial Rock Dust
    1 cup Soft Rock Phosphate
\nMy last grow was bagseed.  This grow I have upgraded!  I got a bunch of feminized seeds from Herbies and put two into a paper towel for germination tonight- a Cindy 99, and a Lemon Kush.  Those are the only ones I ordered 4 seeds of, so I figured in case anything goes wrong (this being my first organic grow) I don't want to lose a strain completely.
\nRight now it is too cold to use my veg space, so I'll be getting these girls started in my flower tent (which is currently empty) under the MH light to keep them warm at night.  And I just started my soil cycling on Jan 2nd, so when the girls pop, they are going into straight CoM Potting Soil, Lobster Compost, and rice hulls/perlite, with no amendments added.
\nFinally, I just started a batch of ACT brewing (my first!), so I can keep my cycling soil moist (seemed to be drying out on top) and to re-inoculate it with microbes.   I don't want my soil to be too wet, and I don't have much soil, so I'm only making approx. 32 oz of ACT.  I followed the percentages put forward by Tim Wilson at www.microbeorganics.com, which equated to 1.75 tbsp of EWC, 7ml of blackstrap unsulphured molasses, and .15 tbsp (!!!) of kelp meal (I just did a tiny pinch).  That started brewing at 4PM today, so it'll be done sometime around 4AM - 10AM Wednesday.
\nYeah, I think that takes care of it lol...... gonna have one more beer and finish the nat'l championship game!  Hope to see ya'll around here soon Blades!

  2. Nice start on your journal G_t_G!

Looking forward to seeing your living soil bless you with buds a-plenty.

  3. Wasn't able to read it all. This is a helluva game!  Coast of maine... MMMMMMM! I'll read after game. Like that you went with a soil my man!

  4.
Wowza, I got a mod as my first?!?!? lol   :metal:   I must be VIP!

Thanks Chunk!  I felt like maybe I was jumping the gun creating a journal already with no plant pics to post, but with LOS, most of the work goes in before the seed is even planted lol.  Hope to see you around some more

  5.
lol Yeah, I can be a little loquacious at times.  It is a great game!  CoM was Jerry's most important contribution.  He helped me figure out a bagged organic soil that I could source nearby w/o crazy shipping costs.

  6.

LOL!.....the luck of the draw  From my perspective, everybody at GC is a VIP :bolt:

  7. Oooooooooooooooooooooooo MY!!!!! This game is insane! Glad you told me bought it. I owe you one! I've been on the hunt for some good worm castings. Take my grow to the next level!

  8. @[member="Chunk"]  While you're lurking, if you still are (and to everyone else as well).... what mix would you use for the seedlings?  I know I don't want to burn them with nutrient amendments like alfalfa.....  I was thinking the CoM Potting Soil, the CoM Lobster Compost, and aeration (rice hulls/perlite), each 1/3 of the mix.  But should I include the EWC?  Oyster shell flour? Glacial rock dust? Mycorrhizal inoculant?  Thanks man

  9.
I wouldn't buy Nature's Solution EWC again.... not that I thought they were bad (I am still too green to know good from bad EWC), but I feel confident I can find cheaper, local sources of guaranteed high-quality EWC (this bag doesn't describe what the worms were fed or anything).  I have 1lb or so left, so I'll use that up but keep looking for better sources in the meantime.  I remember Jerry and a few others throwing some good company names out there, and websites that help find them, just need to find those posts again

    Hey Gandalf,

Congrats on going LOS! You won't look back. :hello:

Northern Lakes Organics is where I get my castings. Consistent, quality castings at a reasonable price. Lots of good info on castings, too.

EDIT: I've got a C99 in bud upstairs. Sweeeet!

    See ya...

  11. That seed starting mix u said sounds excellent my man. My seeds go into peat, ewc and aeration that's it.

Glad to see u got a journal goin! I'll be watchin this one. Not too often u get to hop in at the beginning. I'm no mod tho... so don feel too special :D

  12.
Sweet dude, thanks for rollin in, and thanks for the link! That is a good price, and free shipping!  I just went through your journal (well the last 15 pages) and there are no pics of the C99!  What a tease!  I'll keep checking in, but now that you have a new camera, you got no excuse to take 7 pics of the Haz C and none of the C99 lol

  13.
Cool man.... so maybe I'll throw some EWC in there.... probably also some rock dust and mycorrhizal inoculant because those can't burn seedlings. They'll just help promote fungal growth (I think).  Thanks dude, yeah I'm starting from total scratch with nothing in flower or anything.  You may not be a mod, but you post as much as one, so I'll consider it a win lol.  As long as you keep tossin out killer tidbits like that buildasoil.com link!

  14. I started mine in FF Light Warrior, mostly because it's what I had. They did fine. I read somewhere that too much EWC can be bad for seedlings but I don't know more than that.

I'm neither a mod nor a prolific poster but I'm still subbed. Good luck!

  15.
My seedling mix is 1 part aeration / 1 part EWC / 4 parts either coco or sphagnum peat. The EWC has a mild nutritional charge that won't burn plants.

  16.
Good to have you bro!  All are welcome!  I'm over-thinking it, of course.  I'm sure they would do fine in straight CoM potting soil... but I can't accept that so I'll complicate it with EWC, compost, rock dust, etc lol.

  17.
Wow, I am surprised...... only 1 part aeration in a 6 part mix?

D'oh!!  I just realized I left the ACT to bubble out in the grow room (but outside the flower tent where the MH keeps things warm) where temps overnight (on nights like last night where it was 7F) can get down to 45F.  Not ideal conditions.  The microbeorganics website says he observed no major differences down to 50F, so I'm sure I didn't kill anything, but probably slowed it down.  Will give it 2 or 3 extra hours to bubble before applying now......

  19. Some ppl use 50-50 ewc n peat. I don't get it either lol. Do they only water it like once? Lol

Well..... a few incredibly minor stumbles yet again lol.

I was concerned about my ACT being in the cold, so I wanted to heat it back up as quickly as possible.  Soooooo I sat it in front of a space heater, thinking in my mind I'd give it 5 minutes to heat up then move it away.  1 hour and a bowl later, I remembered it, and boy was it toasty!  Luckily the microbe website says he observed no major difference up to 100F, and I don't think the ACT went that high..... but still, WTF am I doing???  I poured the ACT on my soil this morning, and it seemed good.  It had the earthy, mushroom smell that MicrobeMan describes.... so rock on lol

Second.... I germed two seeds, one C99 and one Lemon Kush.  I had them labeled on the plate.  This morning I checked, and both had popped.  However, I was somehow so focused on getting them planted, and what I was putting into their mix (CoM soil, CoM compost, perlite, some EWC, rock dust, and mycorrhizal inoculant) and moistening it, and getting things just right, that I didn't label their solo cups! Sheissekopf!!  Will have quite a wait before I can sort this one out, if I ever can.....

As I said, minor acts of idiocy on my part.  On the whole... just glad they both popped and that my grow tent is seeing action again!
