San Jose

Discussion in 'The Great Outdoors' started by sky_high, Dec 11, 2013.

  1. Hello all. So there's a good chance that I'll be moving to the San Jose area within the next few months. I plan on staying for at least 6 months, possibly longer if I like it.  I have a place to stay, and a decent amount of money saved up, just no job in the area yet. I'll focus on that once I'm there. What I'd like to know is if there's anyone here who lives in the San Jose/Bay area, and what they think of it.

What's the culture like? How's the social scence? What are the people like? What should I see while I'm out there? Is it fairly easy to find cannabis without a MMJ card, or should I plan on getting on asap?

Basically, any information is good information. I'm lived most of my life in the midwest, but spent some time in northern california a few years ago -- absolutely loved it. I knew I'd be back.

I plan on doing a lot of exploring throughout the area/state since I'll have access to a car. I've never been to San Fransisco, so obviously, that'll be my first destination. Yosemite is a close second.

    Any help/suggestion is greatly appreciated!

I'm curious, are you coming out here just for shits? Whatever the reason welcome!

What you're getting is from a born and raised perspective that's never had any real time outside of San Jose. Well anyway to me it feels like a busy, business oriented family town. People go to work 9-5 then go home to their families in suburbia. We have a good nightlife scene and you probably will not get stabbed/shot. Like in any city there are the good places and bad places and it really depends where your housing it. Either way the general consensus is that San Jose is pretty boring...

BUT I TOTALLY DISAGREE! I Fucking love this city. The weather is always great, the people are nice(people everywhere are nice) and won't bother you, and you are close to many attractions. Like you mentioned, SF is about an hour away, you can take a weekend trip to Yosemite, go snowboarding in Tahoe, fishing/camping/hunting nearby. The main point is that it is a great place to go home to. A lot of my peers don't realize it but we are the 10th largest city in the nation. TENTH FUCKING LARGEST! Third largest in the state! It utterly blows my mind. It's hard to realize until you drive up highway 19 to skyline or up the foothills at night and see the literal OCEAN of street lights that rivals the stars. Orange flowers in a field of humanity. You can see the streak of the 101 cutting through the city with thousands of INDIVIDUALS with individual thoughts, lives, responsibilities , relationships driving their car home in the coming twilight.

To answer your questions more precisely
    1. What is the culture like?
Again it really depends where you live and what area. There is huge ethnic diversity. So much so that it shocked me to go to other cities and find almost all white people. Notably a mexican and vietnamese ethnic population along with tons of other hispanic and asian people. Don't be worried if youre white though because there are plenty here too, it was just a culture shock for me when I grew up in an isolated area on the east side.
    2. Social Science/People
I would say the people are friendly and open to conversation. I can ONLY make this observation from second hand knowledge from a buddy who goes to college in New Jersey. He says that on the east coast most people don't make eye contact with you nor do they want to have small talk while standing around. He says they have a almost  reserved, steely, superficial outside but once you talk to them they are just like anyone. I personally don't mind talking to random people and I haven't come up with many issues from doing that. And to quote Slug "The woman are beautiful, to me they are, and we're not infested with pretentious movie stars" You'll have no problem fitting in. You won't have any trouble fitting in because from my observations we like "foreigners." You are interesting. But please for the love of god be interesting for the sake of being interesting. I am not pressuring you to be interesting but I hate it how some people go crazy for "different" people just because theyre different when in reality theyre as interesting as a stick in the mud. The worst part is that the different people take it all to their head and never develop truly interesting personalities(This is a HUGE generalization that exists in my worldview, I have no idea if this affects a lot of people . Back on tract..You will find all kinds of people here. Especially with the help of the internet you can go to meetup.com and meetup with people with similar interests. I used it for the first time to go to a toastmasters meeting, cool beans. From teeny boppers, mall rats, and valley girls(Where I think the term originated from) to Stoners, business men, bar hoppers, musicians, professionals, artists, students, grisly hunters and fishermen, punk, skaters, couch potatoes, gamers, psychics, single mothers.. We are in effect a conglomerate of what humanity has to offer. It never ceases to amaze me :smoke:

    3. What you should see..
Depends what interests you. We have great parks *we love our parks* hiking trails. We have stadiums museums, corner prostitutes. We have nightlife, ethnic distrcits, consumer centers. We have a fair share of cool abandoned or less wandered areas. ANd as stated, you can always travel out for a trip.

    4. Cannabis
Last I checked we got 100+ dispensaries in SJ. I would say it is definitely worth it to get your MMJ card here. You CAN get by with on dealers but there is really no good reason to. I've been lucky to have family members with mmj cards and close friends who deal so I have always had a nice hook. I can't get a mmj card myself (atleast until the paradigm changes) because of a career choice I plan on going into. Overall you'll be fine. I have no experience buying cannabis from a stranger however..

If youre single and have a good inflow of money then you will be more than fine. There is literally something to do everynight, some place to go, some place to see, and some new connections to make..you gotta just go out there and find them. There are always events that you can online. What's really cool that i forgot to mention is music in the park is every thursday which is free (I just looked online, they might start charging which is a huge bummer) weekly event thats hosted in downtown in the summer. I used to ride the lightrail (ANOTHER PLUS! We got public transportation and a lotta bike lanes if thats your thing) by myself to go to those events and even toked up with some randoms. I can't iterate it enough man, this is a great city. If you can't find something for you here then maybe you are destined as a hermit.

It's an amazing city man and we'd love to have you. Shoot me a PM if you actually get here and I'll show you around as best as I'm willing as I can ;) .

Keep the good vibes rollin man, stay safe.

  3. Wow! Let me first say, I truly appreciate the response. That's about as good of an answer I could possibly expect. Thanks for taking the time, my man. Helps a ton.

I'd be moving out there for a number of reasons. First and foremost -- I met of ton of amazing friends when I lived in Tahoe and it's been a few years now. I keep saying I'll move back, but it's been difficult to just up and leave. Some live in Tahoe, some in SJ, some in SF. Secondly, I hate my situatuion out here. I've been bouncing around jobs that I hate. I can't seem to find my 'big break'. The midwest isn't exactly known for it's creative scene. Jobs in graphic art/photography/design, etc are much more abundant out West and I'm willing to take a chance on getting out there. Luckily, I would have a place to stay (with a woman I care very much about) so even if I don't find a job right away, I could enjoy traveling the area until then.

Like you said, SJ is the 10th largest city in the US. That blows my mind. Most people out here don't even know where San Jose is. I love big cities. I would be living a little southeast of downtown, but I'm sure I'll be heading to the city all the time.
Seems like SJ has it all. Again, really appreciate the response. This helps a lot. If I do make it out there I'll definitely PM you and we'll have to figure something out. Grab a beer, smoke a bowl, and go from there haha.

  4. You'll love it here

San Jose suck balls. Full of Mexicans that like to steal shit. Full of liberal (D) douch bags.
    Way to overpriced.

San Jose and Tahoe are like 2 differnt worlds let alone about 4-5 hrs away. Stay out of the bay. Notice how most commute there and live else where for a reason. It sucks the only thing they have going there is the sharks.

  6. Yeah I totally agree. I lived like 20 minutes north of San Jose in Los Altos. It was pretty cool there! Some parts of San Jose are really sketchy haha, other parts like Willow Glenn are really nice!

  7. Yep I moved out of the bay about 7 years ago. Love everything about visiting there would not want to live there for more than a week. Hope op has some cash saved up becuse it ain't cheap down there.

  8. Yaaa same here. I'm in Morgan hill now lol, it's like 30 minutes south of San Jose. Everything is expensive as fuck. Buying medical marijuana is a joke ( although there are a ton of clubs in San Jose), that shit is so over priced haha

  9. Those clubs are a joke. I have had my card for 8 years and have not stepped into one in about 7 years now. Won't be doing this in the bay.

  10. Well not on that level.... But maybe a little like this...:p 1396371450149.jpg

For real though living in the bay does suck... I'm saving up to move out of the bay and buy some land up north..

  11. Damn. I really don't think I saw many of your pics from last year. Good shit there. Mad props.

  12. Thanks man :)

  13. Hey man, not too much to contribute here but I used to visit San Jose all the time cause my bro lived/worked there and dude, it's chill.  I live in Miami and it's a completely different world for me when I'd go there, or at least the area that I was in. Even though it went through a pretty big population growth, it feels nothing like a "big city" to me (from the few times I've been) and I loved that about it. Me personally, I wouldn't wanna straight up live there, mostly cause I'm used to the fast paced, urban life. My bro also said it was a bit slow to live in but that it sorta grows on you. Some parts are beautiful and some parts are fucked, but that's every city. Last thing I wanted to include was how awesome the weather was. Nearly perfect every day I spent there! Dope.

Good luck, dude, enjoy yourself  :smoking:

  14. I dont think the bay completely sucks

But I would definitely prefer to move up north or possibly south (not like LA or anything)

The bay area is too fast paced and busy for my liking. Id rather be someplace with a more relaxing environment.

Right now I have a lot to save up so we will see what happens in the future

  15. Great to visit. Sucks living there.

  16. It has its pros and cons

And grouping the whole bay area into one is pretty ignorant

There's plenty of different areas in the "bay area"

  17. I know. I lived there for 18 years. Of course it has it's pros and cons like every place. Why do you think most people commute there from the north bay. It's nice to visit but sucks to live there.

  18. I was there for about 3 months. No doubt there are some sketchy ass areas in San Jose. Heard plenty of rounds let off at night. Not the best feeling. San Fransisco and Oakland were dope. I liked Santa Cruz too.

No way I could afford to live there though. Everything is insanely priced, like you guys mention.

I enjoyed my time out there, but I could see how living there long-term would be another story.

  19. I live in Santa Cruz(born n raised). Its awesome here. Can chill at the beach everyday. The people here are very nice and friendly. Easy to make new friends. Usually the only dicks around here are from out of town. The city gets filled with people from San Jose and around there every weekend though so if you plan on making trips over the hill do it during the week to avoid traffic over hwy17 (and believe me it gets bad). Also have to watch out for commute traffic no matter where you are in the bay 7-10am going toward Silicon Valley, and 3-6pm literally everywhere.

And yes the area is pretty pricey for a decent place.

  20. Next time I go to Santa Cruz to surf, we should smoke a fat blunt!
