Medical science and technology is constantly improving. Cures and artificial human body parts are more common than ever before. With people like that russian trycoon who is pushing for artificial brains by 2045, we may actually achieve immortality. Eventually, it's only a matter of time before humans may actually reach immortality.

My question is, would you guys be for immortality? I know of people who think human immortality would be nothing but problems. I for one thing human immortality would be a great thing. Considering I am sure we could end our lives when we feel necessary, also I believe our intelligence after 100, 200, and even 300 years of life would unbelievable. I feel like humans would transcend what they are now, leave Mother Earth, and move on.

I just want to hear peoples inputs on our search for human immortality. Good thing, bad thing? Moral or immoral to Mother Nature? Is it something we should be dumping money into?

Immortal things you should check out btw:

  2. I think if we are to achieve immortality, it must be a natural process. I would accept the philosophers stone, but I wouldn't make for myself a artificial body or any such human made thing.

  3. Personally no,

For me life is a short lived journey, if I knew I could live forever then all the little things that crop up in life and surprise you and bring you happiness would not mean as much, i see these little events, things like having a really interesting conversation with a stranger on a train, or seeing nature untouched and countless other encounters, if i knew i would live forever then i wouldnt appreciate them as much.

As i say, 'Our humanity comes from our understanding of our own mortality'

  4. I'd love it. Breeding would have to be regulated though. Imagine if your brain never aged and your body never got old? Live and learn forever? Sounds like paradise. Although the suffering of the lower classes would still lead to death and misery. I'm sure it'd create a huge rift between the immortal and mortal.

If everyone on earth could achieve this together and it not be controlled monetarily it would be the best thing to happen to man.

  5. I think immortality in the physical sense is impossible.

Fountain of Eternal Life. It symbolizes "Man rising above death, reaching upward to God and toward Peace."

This is how I'd like to look at it. Mankind rising, conquering yet another amazing feat, moving onward.

Although I never did think about lower class people, would they be able to afford whatever it is that allowed immortality. If not, how would immortals and mortals interact.

Also, look at the immortal jellyfish. Theoretically immortal, but still can be killed by other living beings and what not. Scientists have been studying that little jellyfish for years, maybe one day we could figure out how to make our cells replace themselves.

I believe the soul is immortal, perhaps if we become conscious enough as an entire species, we could leave a body and enter a body at will. Like be reborn whenever we want. I'm fucking high but this makes sense.

That depends on the type of immortality we achieve though. I put up a few Wikipedia links of different forms of immorality and certain goals scientists are working for.

Nothing is impossible with nanobots and genetic engineering. We could live forever sooner than later. The day will come where aging is a thought of the past. The question is, when that day comes will we be anymore ready to handle it than we our the issue with having the increasing number of people living well into their elderly years today.

  10. Lol another french revolution but this time mortals killing immortals instead of poor killing the rich.

  11. I mean shit, people born now are expected to live easily to their 90s and 100s

Imagine life in another 100 years even without immortality. Living to be in the 120s or even more?

Eternity is a long time. And there will always be something to kill you.

I am not sure how accurate that is even with medicine. Americans are as unhealthy as ever and fatter than ever, though smoking less than ever before. But that doesnt matter because being obese(30 pounds overweight) is just as detrimental to health as smoking.

  14. I'd say it's more or less pretty accurate. The average age a person lives increases in first world countries pretty much every decade. If you were to go back to the old days, a 50 year old was considered a wise old man. Now, a 50 year is just a good age, a mid life age.

As for health in America, idunno, that's due to the persons lifestyle and how much freedom we have here.  If you chose to live an unhealthy life, don't expect to live a average long life.

Yea but 1/3 of the country is obese and it is not improving. What happens if it reaches 50%, it easily could because we are doing nothing to correct it. What do we do with the average then when 30's and 40 y/o's are having f-in heart attacks. It is already happening. People in their 20's even

All we need to do is understand what mechanisms trigger aging and what keeps something young. It's kinda the same with cancer. If we just turn on the right parts of a cell it will take care of the problem itself. Of course that's a super duper simplified version of things. They've been learning what causes a brain to age and how to stop it. We're getting there.

  17. We are consciousness, therefore we are eternity.

  18. This is true, but medical science has also been creating things like artificial hearts that can one day replace those broken hearts. Still, I know many people who live active healthy lives and still have health issues.

This is too deep for me, makes no sense  :confused_2:

They have found out what causes things like our cells to age. Something to do with this strand that's on the end of our DNA and every time our DNA/cells age and fix themselves this "strand" becomes shorter and shorter and eventually will start to "age" and not "heal" the cells correctly. So theoretically, if they could somehow expand these "strands" on the DNA or make them not get shorter, our cells could infinitely repair themselves.

The longer we live in this age the more we will know. By the time i'm old (making an assumption since everyone in my fam lives forever) it may just be possible.

He was only saying that it is only because we humans are capable of conscious thought. Therefore only we would know when eternity ends because we created it by our thoughts. Which is sort of true, eventually we die with the universe if we cant find a way out. But the universe never really dies, it just slowly uses up energy until its a dark and cold place at absolute zero, with no energy in existence anymore. We really need to figure out what is going on with black holes because it would be a great benefit to figuring out our existence.
