Android or Apple? HELP ME PLEASE

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by M32 Blazer, Dec 1, 2013.

  1. Sorry for the long post:

I really can't make a decision on whether to buy a google Android tablet or an Apple ios tablet. I'm leaning towards the Android community but I've never owned a tablet or even an Apple or Android phone before, can someone with experience offer me some guidence and pros/cons of both platforms please?

I reckon I've narrowed my choices down to either the google Nexus 10 by Samsung or the Ipad 4th gen by Apple. Nexus 10 runs on the 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system and Ipad 4 runs on the ios 7 operating system (i think) but I'm extremely curious as to what happens when KitKat (Jelly Bean's upgrade) and ios 8 get released? does that make any device that runs on Jelly Bean or ios 7 completely useless in a heartbeat because all new apps for the future will be exclusively released on the new operating systems rendering the old operating systems and all devices that run on them pointless owning? I'm a newbie to tablet life and don't feel the need to constantly quickly upgrade to a brand new very expensive device every single time a new OS is released...

Why are Apple's devices so crazily popular and in mass control of the market if owning one (unjailbroken) means that you can't even co-operate or be compatible with any other products made by companys other than Apple? Microsoft, Sony, Samsung etc. all useless if you own an apple device but with Android products there alot less restrictive and offer much more flexibility & freedom without Apple's stupid limitations, is this entirely true? Also on Apple you can add files to your device but can never copy from your device to another device (PC, Laptop, Games Console etc.) I've tried it on iPod Classic I can easily copy music, pictures, videos etc onto it from my Windows PC but for some reason can't copy them from the Ipod onto anything else! Will this be the same on the iPad too? And you can't even watch videos on safari because it has no flash player, true or false? I like watching films online but on Apple it's either YouTube or nothing for video viewing?

But apparently Apple are the only company who produce tablets 100% protected and virus free? Is this the one and only reason why they are far in the lead and so damn expensive in comparison to anything else??? I can't think of 1 other reason why Apple is so high and mighty, you can't even choose your own background or apps layout it's a joke.. so if i buy the Nexus 10 is it prone to catching viruses and easily breaking or not working correctly? I want long lasting value for money It's a massive shame because I've done alot of research and the Nexus 10 is one of the best and most powerful tablets ever created, trust me it's truly phenomenal. But every store i go into and ask for a Nexus 10 nobody seems to sell them :/ but iPad's however are always availible! Nexus 10 is amazing but everywhere I go it's always Apple Apple Apple! Apple this, Apple that. Why is the whole world crazy for Apple? Is there something I'm missing?

One of the only reasons I'm even considering an iPad is because I've heard the Android playstore is severely lacking in the quantity of depth, apps and features compared to Apple's App Store.. Why is this? Why do App creators usually create Apps for Apple but not for Android? The other reason I considered the iPad is because I'm scared of buying an Android only for it to catch a virus and become incredibly slow and eventually unuseable, whats the liklihood of this happening?

Thank you to anyone who helps me out :)

  2. The new kindle fire hdx is kick ass. My woman has a kindle fire I got her for her birthday and its trick. It runs a Linux based OS, no viruses with it.

If I wanted anything better than the kindle fire hdx I would buy a touch screen laptop and have a lot more power and flexibility.

The I pads rock, no doubt about it. the Samsung should have an SD card port for file transfers and extra storage so that's a huge plus.

what do you want to do with it? that will help you decide.

  3. I want something that is customizable, and capable of streaming sports, watching movies online for free and has a decent amount of FREE games & apps avalible which probably rules the iPad out. The Widget stuff looks good on the Nexus 10 but I haven't actually had a go with it yet. I'l hav a look at the KindleFire though and see what it has to offer.

I'm drawn into high quality 1080p resolution screens and fast responsive core processors that can handle multiple apps running at the same time and won't lag or slow down which to my knowledge has to be either an iPad or a Nexus 10 (I could be wrong)

    I'd choose Android

  5. You won't be streaming sports or movies with an iPad. They don't support flash player, which is the most widely used extension to play videos and games in browsers. You can watch porn since porn sites have complied and used inferior software and file formats, like 3Gp and mov, to work on iOS devices. Outside of porn, most websites couldn't give a shit if you don't have flash.

  6. Android. You seem to be somewhat misinformed about a few things which is okay.

In terms of smartphones, Android holds about 3/4 of the global market share leaving iphones in the dust. Android and Apple are roughly equal in terms of tablet sales.

Android has some "malware" but I don't think it can do anything without root access because all apps run inside a sandboxed virtual machine (of course, you always want to be careful about what data apps can access, but android tells you what apps have access to before you install them)

You are correct that Android is far more customizable than ios. You actually have more features and customization available in stock android than in jailbroken ios. On ios you can re-arrange your icons and put them in folders as well as change the wallpaper but that's about all the customization you get.

  7. So is the Android Play Store really just bare bones compared to the Apple App Store? Or was that misinformed too

That will be a huge deciding factor

Some types of apps are more prevalent on one platform or the other but they have roughly an equal number of apps last time I checked. Most of the really popular games will be available on both platforms or at least have close alternatives.

The reason so many large companies create apps exclusively for ios is because they dont do proper market research or are creating apps for music creation and need access to ios' lower audio latency (android is getting better about audio latency, and there are music creation apps for it which are actually really good)

If you want to make music on android, 8 bucks will get you this. The current version isnt as fully featured as the one in this demo but it will be released soon. It can be used to create just about any type of music and theres a great and supportive community at their forums if you need help with it.

  13. thats based on how many units were bought in those quarters, not how many people hold the devices world wide at this time.
In other words, 81% of the phones shipped that quarter were android. Big whoop, they have a huge array of phones, cheap to expensive. a new IOS phone is released yearly. Compared to the slew of android ready phones that are released year round.

And notice how in my post it has global, and US %'s. So i'm not sure why you said this...
"Notice in my post you quoted I said global market share  ;)
Still on top in the US as well, just not as far ahead."
\nalso beyond that. Apple just recently secured its dominance for the time being in the asian market
    apple china mobile deal

All I see in your graphics is US percentages. And I wasnt just talking about high-end smartphones either. My point is that iPhones arent as popular or widely used as OP originally thought.

Regardless, if you want a powerful smartphone which gives you the most freedom and customization, android wins hands down.

Edit: just read your article and it doesnt seem to mention anything about dominating the asian market, just a new deal with China Mobile which was just made and hasnt had any effect yet.

  18. It entirely depends what you want it for. If you want to mess around with it and customise things, then Android is definitely the way to go.

If you want something that just works, and works seamlessly, then go for Apple/iOS.

I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad Mini 2 and they cater to everything I need them for.

  19. I work for a company that develop apps for smartphones. Everyone in our team would say, "depends." If you're into doing business and traveling, then Android. If your a casual phone user, you'll find Apple simplicity might suit your needs. Just know Apple has a higher resell value.

  20. Do you want personalization it simplicity? Android is personalization ios is simplicity
