How did your first time making canna butter go?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by RedEyeCEO, Nov 22, 2013.

  1. I'm trying to learn everything I can about canna butter before trying to make some. How was your first experience extracting thc with butter or oil? Was the batch good? How much bud and butter did you use? How long did you cook it? Explain things like that.

    RedEye,

I've posted that below on a lot of sites lately. It is gold standard information on this thread. A lot of people miss it because the thread's title sort of doesn't tell you what's really in it. Good luck and have fun  :D

Everything, and I mean everything, you will ever want to know about how to produce potent edibles is to be found on this thread:

    http://forum.grasscity.com/incredible-edible-herb/742831-badkats-cannapharm-canna-caps-uv-reactive-glowing-hash-candy-canna-bombs-more.html

If you can get to the bottom of page 1 and not realize that you have found the definitive thread on edibles, I'd be very surprised. Just the information on using coconut oil combined with soy lecithin additive, as opposed to butter as the solvent, is worth the price of admission alone. This is science-meets-medicine-maker-meets-party-cook at a professional level, yet written for the every man and woman.

The fundamental processing principles and supporting scientific information you need is to be found in the first 30 or 40 pages. After that you can learn as much again by reading the posts from converts and old hands alike, as well as BadKat's posts clarifying technical issues and the like from time to time.

There are lots of recipes as well as the all important tutorials on how to make activated and bio-available edibles to be found here:

    http://www.badkatscannapharm.com/#!photo-tutorials/cqnr

I recommend the following three techs, to be read as a trilogy:

    Medical Grade Cannabis Concentrate

    Medical Grade Hash Oil

    Medical Grade Cannabis Oil

The links to the tutorial actually bring you back to the thread here at grasscity.com

If I were to give one piece of advice alone, it is this: follow the tutorials exactly, word for word, step by step, at the temperatures specified etc etc. If you heed this advice you will find yourself making killer oils in no time    :D

Seriously, a well made oil and you will be dosing with no more than you would smoke in a day (if a regular smoker), or what you would smoke in a session (if an occasional smoker).

There are not inconsiderable issues with tolerance levels and some people have problems with absorbing and processing the oil at a physiological level, but this post is not really the place to canvass them in depth - well, not at this point in the discussion anyway.

The main thing is to set out with the aim of getting the best out of your starting material    :)

    Have fun.

  3. good stuff. I'm also looking to hear people's stories, how they make their canna butter using however much bud they use.

    Well,

My last Canna Oil was made using:

27gms of fresh, dry, frosty popcorn bud (mostly indica strain)

    220 mls (9/10ths of a cup) of extra-virgin cold-pressed organic coconut oil

45 mls of granulated soy lecithin

I decarboxylated the herb in a pre-heated oven at 220F for 30 minutes, opened the oven door all the way and allowed the dish to sit in there for another 10 minutes with the oven on, then removed to cool at room temp.

I then processed the oil as per the Medical Grade Canna Oil tutorial here:

    http://forum.grasscity.com/incredible-edible-herb/742831-badkats-cannapharm-canna-caps-uv-reactive-glowing-hash-candy-canna-bombs-more.html/page-22#entry11299348

I incorporated some personal touches, but it is important to remember to follow the tutorials to the letter. When you have made a few you can change things up a bit without impacting on the integrity of the process. Everything in the tutorials is there for a reason, so don't inadvertently throw the baby out with the bath water.

In the end I recovered 180mls of activated/bio-available oil.

A killer dose for me would be 20mls of oil. Using the recipe that I do, that equates to 2 cookies.

1 cookie has my best friend flying, and he's an extremely experienced smoker and tripper etc (but he doesn't smoke every day and his tolerance levels are usually pretty low).

So, you have some idea now. BadKat's thread is the place to get all you need, trust me. I've looked at a hundred threads on a dozen sites. BK is the pea.

    RedEye,

I forgot to mention that my last one was a 4 and a half hour oil.

This means I had taken it well beyond the minimum time for maximum activation of the THC without any degradation, which is 2 hours.

A 2 hour oil will be mostly cerebral in nature. Edibles of this type can be extremely strong, inducing trip-like experiences, but in normal doses the effects are often missed by people whose tolerance levels (T-levels) are very high, particularly if the have smoked shortly beforehand.

As you "progress" the oil further with extra time under heat at or near 220F (but never over 225F), you slowly degrade the THC through a series of molecular changes, with the end product being CBN.

    CBN is the couch-lock factor.

So in short, my 4.5 hour oil was very cruizy, trippy without being over the top in the peak, very mellow and enjoyable during the long, slow and smooth comedown but without putting me to sleep. Duration around 10-12 hours. I didn't have a pipe for the first half dozen hours because I didn't need/want one  :D

You wouldn't process an oil beyond 8 hours if you intend to use it for recreational purposes, if it did anything at all by this stage it would put you to sleep and that's about it. All the THC is degraded, and once that has happened it can't be reversed.

I've made oils that have had longer lasting effects, but generally speaking the buzz you get off the edible is dependent on the amount of time the oil was processed for.
