  1. originally had this in microgrow but I figured this was more appropriate.
Alright so this is gonna be my first grow and i'd like to put everything on here to see if theres anything I could do to make this better. first I want to say im trying this organic now. I didn't start that way but I think I over nuted my plants with MG and thought that it was a deficiency. like I said im new and have/had no idea how to read my plants but im learning a lot fast I feal like. lots of pics to follow as well.

    My questions
1.what can I do about keeping dust from getting in the box I can see it collecting on the fans.
2.my plants came back from the over nute but the bottom leaves on a few stayed yellow with brown spots getting bigger not sure if the leaf is going to just die or theres something I can do.
    3. what can I use for organic fert and what should I add to my soil mix more importantly than anything else.im ballin on a budget right now.
4.when would be a good time to top them I have a tall box but would like to have them bush out for higher yield.I wont be keeping all plants in there probably the 3 strongest one or ill have a new box for veg.

the plants in the 3 bigger pots and the 2L bottles have soil as follows
    not exact amounts
    20% perlite
    40% peatmoss
    30% organic soil no nutrients
maybe10% MG soil I knocked off as much as I could from the roots when I transplanted them.

after I transplanted I flushed them and have been letting them dry out for the past 4 or 5 days to let the roots move around in the new soil. probably going to water today.

    now for the plants

these two are looking a lot better after I got them out of the miracle grow soil and flushed them.[IMG] this one was started outside in early august I think and it didn't get very big before it started flowering due to the time of year. it got pretty dank but obviously too small for buds.well now we have it re-vegin and its growing all kinds of crazy pretty crazy to see what its doing.[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I also have two seedlings that broke surface 6 days ago and ive been keeping extensive records on them and started them with a fresh all organic soil mix as follows.
    percent                      name                        NPK
    30                            perlite                        .04-.01-.06
    40                      peatmoss                        .15-.05-.08
    15                      moo-nure                       .20-.05-.20
15                 organic starter mix                no nutes

I was wondering what some essential ingredients to add to this would be when I move them to a bigger pot. im thinking bat guano worm castings vermiculite and some sterile sand.

light cycle is 20/4 just changed it yesterday it was 19/5

temperature/humidity lights on usually stays between 78-84/50-55
    lights off 68-76/55-67

I think that's about it let me know If I left anything out. probably gonna water today and next watering try to find something for nutrients that wont hurt them.

  2. 1) staple pantyhose over the intake holes
    2) I wouldn't worry about one or two small leaves on the bottom.
    3) check the organic forum for basic starter mixes/amendments
    4) Pretty confident it's anytime after the 3rd or 4th set of internodes.

  3. Hi 12bRadar!

You made a wise decision by going with organics.  Here is a link to a very basic soil recipe thread.  It's a very long thread and you should read it all but the soil mix is on the first page.  You should get that mixed up asap so it can cycle before you use it.  It takes 4 weeks minimum to cycle so get that done now.  While you are waiting you may want to transplant to an organic premixed bagged soil.  I used gardners and bloom for a week or so.  Bagged soils don't have a lot of amendments in them so they won't last an entire grow, but I would do that before adding more chemicals to keep them healthy while waiting for your home made soil.  Here is that link.

Here are two more links to great threads.  One is a journal and the other is a thread in the indoor section by a grower that grows plants that make your mouth water.  He's very humble but wait till you see them.

Also, click on all the links in all three threads.  If you don't have time to read them, you can save them to your favorites or make a note where in the thread it is so you can go back for reference.  You may not understand some of what you read at first, at least I didn't, but you will eventually.  It sounds like you are doing good so far.

Oh yeah, keep your lights on one set time, don't keep changing them, an hour here or there won't make a difference but it shouldn't fluctuate.  Do you have a timer?

I have all sorts of stuff in my soil but you should start simple, there is a lot to learn and it's easy to get confused with amendments if you try to add too many at first.

Your plants are looking good so you are doing something right.  Good luck.

P.S.  I just read your post again and noticed the sand, I wouldn't use it, it will weigh your soil down and afaik, won't do much for you, it may even work against you.  Rock dust is what you want.  Like glacial rock dust or granite dust.  There are more listed in that basic soil thread along with the amounts per cubic foot to add.

  4. 12bRadar - I'm new to organics but I'm not new to growing. I've been at it since the 70's.

So I had some plants gifted to me from an old grow friend and I went out and bought some nutrients I never used before. I followed the instructions and ended up burning them too. I was getting ready to go with the bubbleponics hydro grow when I started reading in the organic section. This changed my mind and I decided to go organic.

So I had these plants sitting in ProMix that had been over fertilized. The just feed them water for weeks after that and watched the new growth. The new growth started to show no burning so I then brewed up ACT (you know, EWC + molasses and air pumping). I watered with this once. From there I went with the occasionally compost teas. The plants turned out just fine.

Looking at your picture of the yellowing leaves I would suggest that you not give such young plants any fertilizer. This is the size of a plant I'm growing that has had only water until the day I took this picture.

When I transplanted it I top dressed the soil with neem cake and covered that with EWC. I still haven't given it any thing but water. It is really starting to take off now. It is the plant in the lower left.
