Cal-Mag Deficiency??

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by Prodigus, Oct 13, 2013.

  1. Plants are 5 weeks old.  I seem to always have this issue so I'm starting to think the combo of FFOF and just Distilled water is a problem. I just really want to get to the bottom of this and see what I'm doing wrong. :(    I was reading that if you use distilled water that you REALLY need to add Cal-Mag. Yesterday's watering therefore included both Cal-Mag (1tsp per gallon) and FF Grow Big (2tsp per gallon).

What type of medium; soil or hydro?  Soil Grow
What brand and type of soil?  FFOF
    Indoors or outdoors? Indoors
What strain?  BC God Bud / Jamaican Dream
How old are the plants?  5 Weeks
What type of lights and how many watts? 400w MH
How far from the lights?  ~12 inches
What is your watering frequency and source of water? Now that I'm in the 5gal, roughly once a week unless needed earlier
What, how much and when was it fed? NPK?  In these pics they'd had nothing but the nutes in the soil.
What is the medium/runoff pH and PPM if in hydro?  6.3
What are the temps and humidity in the room?  77/45
What size pots?  5 Gallon (just transplanted to these a week ago to try and resolve issues)
Any bugs? Look real close. I don't "see" any
Any other pertinent info?  This mainly affects the lower leaves.  New growth looks ok.

I use cal/mag with every watering and have no problems. Looks like you're low on phos as well.Sent from my NSA recording device.

  3. Are you overwatering? Do you let the soil dry out some in between waterings? Do you feel the weight of the pot before you water? Tip it up on its edge with one hand. Even with the soil and plant in the pot, it should feel light when it's time to water. Overwatering makes for an oxygen poor root environment. Low oxygen levels in the root zone make it difficult for plants to properly absorb nutrients. This condition commonly expresses itself as various forms of nutrient deficiency.

If you just transplanted into new soil, you should not be experiencing nutrient deficiencies. Overwatering may have been your problem even before transplanting.

  4. Looks like you need Mn. added to your nute regimen.

  5. I wouldn't think it's from overwatering I hope...  I always wait until they're pretty darn dry before I water again.  That said, when I do water I add a lot of water..  Usually a gallon of water to a 5 gallon pot.  I always thought you should water heavily when you do water but to wait until they are sufficiently in need before doing so.

Manganese?  How would I add that beyond by normal nutes.  I just started nutes with this watering along with adding cal-mag.  I'm noticing on one that I'm getting some leaf curling but it's just on the one...

  6.
So how do you determine when it's time to water?  You say that you wait until "they're pretty darn dry", but HOW do you determine when the pots have reached that point?

  7.
Have you looked to see if your nutes include Manganese? If not, expect stunted growth and the brown spots.

  8. I stick my finger 2-3 inches into the soil to check for dryness and I pick up the pots to check their weight.  They're a LOT lighter when it's time to water.

I checked on the the FF Grow Big mmman and it includes  Managanese "EDTA" whatever that means.  I just started using it though so maybe I should have started using it sooner??   Hopefully since it's in the nutes that I'm now giving they'll recover nicely?

Are there any other ways to give them this nutrient?

    Thanks!

Ingredients: Ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, urea, blood meal, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate, earthworm castings, Norwegian kelp, iron EDTA, zinc EDTA, manganese EDTA, copper EDTA, chelating agent, disodium ethylenediamine tetra acetate (EDTA), sodium borate and sodium molybdate.

  9. It's also typically about a week between waterings in the big pots.   The smaller 1 gallon pots seemed to dry out a lot faster so it's was more like every 3 days or so.
