Progressive rock/metal appreciation thread

  1. Dont know if a thread exists here to celebrate the amazing genre of prog rock and metal.

Ive always been a prog metal head, leaning more towards bands like pain of salvation, queensryche, dream theater, fates warning, testament, symphony x, flower kings....and so on. Pretty much any band with kick ass guitar players.

Its a genre that really makes one want to learn the intricacies of odd meters and music theory and has been a gateway, for me, to get into jazz. Scott henderson, chic corea, metheney, scofield etc etc.

I still love my metal and rock...But lately, its tough to find good music. New bands all seem like they lack the musicianship of the 80s and 90s. Even older prog bands release crap now, its like theyve run out of good ideas.

What are your favourites and why? And how do you compare their talent and creativity to others in the same genre.

  2. Yo dude, check out Catch The Sun and Everforth Right. I hope I just made your day bro. Happy days :)

  3. I like the 70's acidy prog like Gong, Yes, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Caravan.

  4. Nice. Nice melodic grooves and guitar lines. Not a big fan of the vocals. Wish theyd leave em out.

  5. Which band? For Catch The Sun, hit up their newest album "Legacy" (no vocals). I'm in love with the subtle harmonies mixed the those power opening chords.
