seedlings and nutrient lockout

  1. So its a very common mistake for new growers to overwater seedlings, which leads to a phosphorus lockout, which leads to seedlings basically not growing and their stems getting really purple...

My question is then, since in order to fix that you have to flush the grow medium...but doesnt that just HORRIBLY worrsen an overwatered plants root zone? wont that just basically drown them? i can post pictures if needed but i dont think they are really necesseary so ill wait for someone to ask for them before i post them.

  2. if problem is overwatering. then just let them almost completely dry out before watering againg. weigh ur pot b4 and after to get a baseline, then you can determine how much she drinks throughout the day

i use the GH liquid type pH vial, and i pH it at 6.0ish goin in, and runoff is 6.0ish also, so im only 100% sure its an overwatering problem, but not necisserily a nutrient lockout problem, the stems turned pruple which is phos, which can be caused by overwatering so im just guessing with that one, i flushed 3 of my week old seedligs, and left 4 to dry out more to see which would go better

If your growing medium is soil, then your PH should be 6.5...which means its a nutrient lockout problem.

Also, purple seedling stems are completely natural.

  5. its soiless, and the vials arnt accurate enough for 5.8, so i figure 6.0 is good enough

  6.
Then youre still getting nutrient lockout. 5.8 is where you need to keep it for hydro. Invest in a PH pen.

  7. If it was soil I'd say let it dry out. I just had that problem. I don't do hydro so I'm not any help in that area.

  8. How does over watering lead to phosphorus lockout? I've never heard of that.

  9. PH is his problem
