htg complete grow tent kit 400w

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by 4Medical, Sep 2, 2013.

  1. i'm looking to start growing some weed for a medical patient.  i have nothing to start with except some florescent shop lights i used for tomato plants.  i'll need to grow inside and so it looks like this complete tent kit is what is best for me.  but i'd like some feedback.
i can grow up to 6 plants for him and the kit says it will grow 6 plants but it only comes with 4 pots.  i can order 2 more pots if it will grow 6 plants successfully.
also, is the hydro the best choice?  i've never used it before.
here's the link to the tent kit i'm looking to order:

thank you for any help and information

  2. I run in a 4x4 which can handle 6 plants easily. That looks like a 3x3 my friend. Which 6 plants would probably be pushing it. Also you'd need more light for 6 plants. 400w isn't gonna cut it.

  3. it's a 39x39x79.   the next size is almost twice the cost, too much for me.  so i guess i can grow 4 plants in this, would that be enough light for 4 plants?  or can i add more light to this kit or would that be too hot?
i need to have enough to make him some oil and about an ounce a month for the grower.  i can grow continuously once i get it going and figure out how.  hopefully 4 will cover that since the 6 is too pricy for me.
i'm anxious to get started and hoping this kit is the answer as i still need to get it ordered.
    thanks for your reply.

Dont buy a kit like that.  Just go to ebay and/or other grow sites or stores and buy the items that you need.  That tent is ok.  A 600 watt light would work great in it.  But that fan that they are offering is junk.  Those inline fans like they show with the picture won't do anything.  You want a high vortex or high cfm fan.  Those are the squirrel cage fans that range in 4 inch and higher up to 12 inches or maybe bigger.  It would also get exremely hot inside that tent with that light that they are offering.  You can get a 600 watt iPower system with a cool tube which will help keep your temps much cooler.  They are available on ebay for under $200.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/150928769289?var=450138623450&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

You can grow four plants inside that tent.  I can't really comment on hydro other than I wouldn't recommend it if you are a beginner.  Organics is much more simple and provides better taste and potency compared to hydro bud.  Its also much more forgiving in case if you were to do something wrong.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that organics privides better yield.  Hydro has that one.

  5. great, thanks for the link.  i started looking for these items separately today so that really helps.  i'll see what i can get put together and check back here with it.  and i'll look into organics, always looking for simple.

  6. i'm posting my revised plan here as i find what i need:

grow tent: there are so many out there that i'm stumped.  i have room for a 4x4 so i'm thinking i should go ahead and get that size instead of the one in the kit.  so i picked this 4x4 one for now Lighthouse Hydro Mylar Hydroponic Grow Tents Reflective Growing Room

Inline Duct Exhaust Fan Air Cool Blower Vent Cooling Hydroponic- the 6" says it's 400 cfm, not sure if that's enough?

    \nPhresh & Can Lite Filters-the 6x16 is all that's available right now.

\ni'll add more as i find what else i need.  not sure on the filter but i'm sure i'll need one.  i already have a small fan and one larger one on a stand that rotates.  not sure i can use one inside the tent since i don't know what i'll need there.
\non the tent size, will the 600w be enough light for that size and to grow 6 plants?

  7. looks perfect thats all the stuff i would get..I had a lighthouse tent like that and it was pretty good...seams leak light but a 600w is really bright so easy to see..just make sure the room its in stays mostly dark during the dark period

  8. good to know, thanks tintizzy.
i'll be using a spare room so i can black out the windows and light shouldn't be a problem.

  9. I think you should consider a 1000 watt mh/hps with a 4x4 tent.  I am using 600 watt lights in 40" by 40" tents or about 3.5' by 3.5.  I think that a 1000 would provide better coverage.  That same guy on ebay sells the 1000 model and they are not that much more.

I don't know if anyone ever buys anything from East West Hydro, but I bought a Phresh filter from them once about two years ago and am very happy with it.  They sell the 6 x 16 model for $135, but you can get the larger 6 by 24 model for only $140.  I went with that one and its a beast.  I never regretted it.  It has done an amazing job at keeping my odors down for two years now.

  10. I also like HTG fans.  They seem to build good fans.

I am looking at playing around with a 4x4 tent someday with a 1000 watt hps and I might even think about using an 8 inch fan for it.  It seems like overkill, but you can turn it way down so its very quiet while still being able to full enough air to cool the light.

This might have a decent amount of power and isn't too pricey.

  11. the price for the 600w system is about $200 and the 1,000w is $350.  that's a bit much for the budget.  maybe i could add more lights later if needed.  would 2 600w systems get too hot in the tent or perhaps i could add a 400w later?  another option might be a smaller tent, but i'd like to have something big enough for 6 plants.

  12. You could use a 40" by 40" tent.  That tent is actually perfect for a 600 watt light.  It may be possible to add a 400 later.  The thing about that is that a 1000 watt light is going to have more penetrating power because its brighter.  Meaning that I think a 1000 would penetrate the canopy better than a 600 + 400.  Two 600s would be quite a bit of light, but should work provided you have enough cooling.  I think I would either try a 40" by 40" with a 600 or a 4 by 4 with a 1000 if you can.  I understand what you mean about starting out.  Get that cheaper light and small tent and get a grow under your belt and work your way up.

  13. can i grow 6 plants in a 40"x40"?  if so then that's all i need i think?  otherwise i want to get at least the tent size that i'll eventually end up with as far as the tent.  and then i want to go from there.

i'll be visiting a new garden store in our area tomorrow.  http://www.quailmountainranch.net/

on doing an honest cost estimate, if i can get an ounce a month for myself after providing enough for his oil, this could pay for itself in less than a year.  upfront cost is still a problem but...  maybe worth it in the long run.

  14. Why do you want to grow six plants?  Four plants in a 40 by 40 will yield just as much as six if not more.  When you try to stuff that many plants into a limited space, they start to compete with each other.  When that happens yield decreases.  When you have four plants, you allow them to spread out evenly so they can get bigger and pack on weight.  As you gain experience, you should be able to hit higher than an oz per month.  My biggest plant so far by doing four under a 600 in a 40 by 40 is 4oz.  I have hit 16 oz in a tent like this before and I think its possible to hit higher than that with a large enough pot.  Also, a lot of people should have no problems hitting over 10 to 12 or 14 oz in a grow like this.

  15. 6 plants are legal with a prescription in california.  that's what i was using as a guideline.  i see that i need to rethink this.

  16. I did the same thing when I started out.  I wanted to to grow as many plants as possible.  I did six plants in a 40 by 40 when I started out and they started to compete with each other right away.  Now I try to look at a plant as a shape like a square since thats how it looks from top down.  Then I usually want to see how those squares should fit inside of my square growing area if that makes sense.  Thats why four plants in a 40 by 40 is perfect.  It fits the area quite well while I had issues with where to put the other two back when I did six.  Try to do four plants in that 40 by 40 and do two more under a different grow light.

  17. I only found 2 40"x40" tents on ebay, one opens on the side and one opens in the middle.  any advantages to either?
as soon as i get this list together i plan to go ahead and order today.  the garden store here can't beat the prices on ebay for this stuff.

on the tents, one says it's 40"x40" and also aprox 3x3 so I assume it's 40" but i'll check first if i order that one.

I would go with the first one which is this.  I don't like the ones where it zips open right down the middle.  Then when you want to open it to water or whatever, those flaps want to close on you and you have to keep on pushing them open.  With the ones that zip from one side to the other like the first one, that flap or door kind of stays to the one side or out of the way if you need to open it for a bit.  As far as size, the 40 x 40 should be about 3.3 x 3.3 x 6.5.

  19. if you scrog or lst you dont have to worry about light penetration...i've got 8oz off one plant and a 400w in a 2x3..and you want room on the sides for a fan or two

  20. tintizzy, i've heard of the scrog and lst you mention but not sure i understand how to do those.  i need to read up on it but i've been working on getting together this tent room.  of course a smaller tent would be better but i need at least 2-3 ounces a month.  are you saying i could do that with a 2x3 and a 400w?  so much to learn.
