Most dominant athlete in their sport?

Discussion in 'All Sports' started by Griffijuana, Aug 13, 2013.

  1. Today, as I always do, I turned on my TV to my local Fox Sports affiliate and began watching the Detroit Tigers vs Chicago White Sox game. I live in Michigan, close to Detroit so naturally I'm a Tigers fan.

Being a Tigers fan, I have been spoiled getting to spend my summer watching Miguel Cabrera play everyday. We all know how good he is. He is legendary good. And today, right on cue, his first plate appearance he hits a homerun.

If anyone hasn't noticed, he's been on a tear. In his last 7 games (including this one still going on) He's batting near or at .500 (It was .488 prior to HR), has 5 homeruns, and went deep off Mariano Rivera two straight games last series against the Yankees.

Nobody on the planet is better than Miguel Cabrera at baseball. It's practically non-debatable at this point.

That got me thinking, is he the most dominant athlete in sports?

Look at the NBA, the best player is obviously LeBron.
In the NFL there's really no clear cut best player.
NHL, no clear cut best player.

In the 4 major sports it really comes down to Miguel v Lebron.

However if you go outside the major sports you start to get names like Serena Williams, Jimmie Johnson, etc. (not a NASCAR fan, but from what I understand JJ is dominating.)

I wanted to pose the question to GC. Who do you think is the most dominant athlete in their sport?

My vote is Miguel, but there's certainly room to debate

  2. As much as I dislike him. Mayweather is.
Plus he's the highest paid athlete as far as I know

    Trout-Cabrera, Lebron, Crosby, JJ Watt-RG3

Trout and RG3 w those guys cuz, theyre supreme athletes that are pretty rare. Trouts like a modern day Bo Jackson w how big he is already

  5. Definitely not Bryce Harper like everyone makes him out to be. Kids got potential. But that's all it is. Potential.

    "Michael Fred Phelps II -
(born June 30, 1985) is a retired American swimmer and the most decorated Olympian of all time, with a total of 22 medals. Phelps also holds the all-time records for Olympic gold medals (18, double the second highest record holders), Olympic gold medals in individual events (11), and Olympic medals in individual events for a male (13). In winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games. Five of those victories were in individual events, tying the single Games record. In the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Phelps won four golds and two silver medals, making him the most successful athlete of the Games for the third Olympics in a row" -Wikipedia (No, not always credible but is pretty accurate)

You can't get more medals than other countries do all events combined, and blow past all time Olympic records if you don't dominate your field. 'Nuff said.

Hang on a second, you can't call Cabrera the best player in baseball because despite hall of fame hitting credentials he has never won a game as a major league pitcher.
You can call him the best hitter but not the best player.
Babe Ruth would have been called the best player in his time with Boston because he was a dominant pitcher and hitter.
No one has been able to equal the Bambino and thus no one, not even Miggy, is worthy of the title of "best baseball player."
But Detroit also happens to have the best pitcher right now in Max Scherzer.

And don't forget about Lionel Messi.
His stature is mountainous compared to that of Lebron.

  12. Lebron James.  Hate him or love him, he's the best athlete in the world.

  13. USAIN BOLT

Just won another 100m championship yesterday

  14. Ayrton Senna. Greatest Formula 1 driver ever and arguably one of the greatest racers ever. His car control, his ability to take his car father and faster than it was designed to do. He became a god in Brasil only second to god himself. The hatred between him and 3 time world champion Alain Prost and the battles between them are of stuff of legend. When he was killed on May 1st, 1994, while leading the San Marino GP the whole world mourned. During his state funeral, over a milllion people showed you. Vary rarely does a person obtain the world wide respect and admiration that Senna earned.
