How can i lower my ph

Discussion in 'Growing Organic Marijuana' started by bigc29, Aug 8, 2013.

1. When i did my transplant in to 5 gallon smart pots(switch to hps for flowering) I mixed my mix in a kiddie pool & it was cooking for about 2 weeks & my wife started complaining cuz it was in the living room, so i had to transplant at 2 weeks cooking time..i have a ph meter & i put it in the soil & it reads 7.2 - 7.3.
My plants were healthy & still are just starting to curl (leaf tips) I think its gonna burn them & so much work put in it so far, if theres a way please help to lower the ph in the soil
Thanks for the help guys & gals

2. Your plants look pretty far along...changing the actual pH of the soil is a slow process. You could try watering with lower pH water...

What is your runoff pH?

3. Altering the pH of your organic soil is pointless. pH is not your problem. You didn't cycle your soil long enough before using it. I don't think there's anything you can do other than riding it out.

4. Woops I didn't read the part about you cooking your soil for two weeks....

If it's too hot you could flush it. Honestly though your plants look pretty healthy to me.

5. I have a ph meter...but since i started doing organic i don't even check and never have problems..there about 2 & a half weeks in flower

6. Thanks :)

7. so do u think it will be much of a problem @ 7.3....2 weeks cooking time & 1 week in the pots..so like 3 weeks
would it make sense to water with lower ph'ed water..like 5.2 - 5.5 or just ride it out like u said
they don't look bad i'm just nervous
Thanks for the info waktoo

8. Bigc, your plants look beautiful. Quit worrying until there's something to worry about. Adjusting the pH of your water will do nothing to "save" your plants if your soil's too hot. There are many growers out there who didn't cycle their soils for a month and experienced no ill effects. Plus your plants are well established. I think "hot" soil mainly affects clones and newly sprouted seedlings. While I can't speak from personal experience, I'd say that if you've not seen any negative reactions from your plants by now, you most likely are in the clear.

Throw that pH meter away. I bet it's one of those "cheapy" probe types, right? They are very inaccurate and pH fluctuates constantly in an organic soil. IMO, trying to monitor pH is pointless, really. Some growers will disagree, but not most. I have well water that tests at around 320ppm dissolved solids and a pH of 8.1. I used to use RO water and pH adjust down to 6.5. What a waste of time! A little over a year ago, I stopped doing both. Plant vigor and overall health increased dramatically. I think the micro beasties are negatively affected by the acids/bases used in pH adjusters. If you've built your soil with a quality compost component, humic acids will keep your soil's pH right where the plants need it to be.

9. ur right..i guess im just worried about the 2 week cook time..i feel alot better now..lol..thanks waktoo for ur time & nollage :D

Adjusting the waters PH won't do much in a living soil unless you do it via lasting amendments, ie leingbenite or another sulfur compound. Even then, monitoring the soils PH is almost pointless...more so when a plant is living in it.

If you are truly concerned about your PH, check the sap of your plants. 6.4 should be what you see in a healthy cannabis plant.

11. "If it's too hot you could flush it."

What would this do for his soil?

12. haha I thought you were going to ask about how to lower the Ph of your body. I was going to tell you that sounds pretty dangerous.

13. whats sap  ..the run off...so water them with 6.5 water & check the runoff & it should be 6.4 - 6.6 for healthy plants  ... :confused_2:

they don't look sick they look really well fed and watered.

sap is the sticky goo inside a plant, it is the blood of the plant.

id give them plain water till they settle down or until you happy. fuck the ph forget about it chemical brother lolol

15. Yeah, don't stress about it until you see some actual problems present themselves. I was just explaining what should be checked if you are concerned.

Your girls look happy and healthy; I wouldn't worry.

First off, huge kudos to you for having your kiddie pool loaded with container mix "cooking" in your living room. A man amongst men LOL! Second, a wonderful looking crop of medical grade cannabis! Congratulations and huge kudos to your wife for putting up with your shenanigans. May she reap the bounty of your harvest for her patience!

Let us assume your pH probe meter has a +/- .03 correction factor as it does have some amount of fluctuation in its accuracy unless it is a very high lab grade tool. This being the case, and you should attempt to find out what your -/- factor is, you should keep this in mind if you test your soil with this tool. The pH of the soil is actually the pH of the soil in solution and as such it will and should be expected to drift +/- over time and perhaps many times over a growing cycle. You would likely only encounter this each time you stick the probes in the media. The media pH matters greatly but what really matters is the pH of the soil solution that is in the rhizosphere. Your or my ability to keep stability in this zone in an organic grow are zero (0) all other things being equal (buffer capacity, nutrient form, source, and type, and etc. due to the activity of the bacterial and fungal activity in the rhizosphere which actually alter the pH based on the needs of the plant and/or the needs of the life forms located there. Testing the pH of the leachate of a soilless grow is one of the most wasted efforts a grower can undertake because the pH of the run off is going to consistently be different each and every time it is tested. This is a function of soil chemistry, elemental nutrient interaction, and again the living soil occupants. So, do not waste your mental energy testing leachate in an organic grow because it really is not useful information to you, is very likely highly inaccurate, and quite possibly will lead you to a “corrective action” that is incorrect thus causing a cascade, if not an avalanche, of problems with the soil chemistry that may be quite impossible to correct with the time you have remaining before harvest.

Your plants look very healthy and nice in the picture you have posted. If you have 3 weeks or less before your harvest you might be better off doing nothing and let this grow run to harvest as is. Then for your next grow you could plan such that as the other posters suggested, “don't worry about pH” advice would be truly spot on.

If you are hell bent on trying to alter your soil pH I will offer you 3 suggestions but rather than cloud the issue if your plants today are as healthy as they were the day you shared the picture I would leave them alone if you are 3 weeks or less from harvest. Simple reason being that unless you want to use acids or bases to alter your soil chemistry anything “organic” that you undertake is going to require at least 5-7 days before it shows any indication of benefit or neutral affect anyway and then you will only have ~14 more days to limp through.

Make sense?

17. Thanks for the clarification and elaboration.

This is one of those "golden" posts only a few people have the patience to write out here. Kudos to you for doing so.

PS - I like your sig DB.

makes perfect sense..you have helped me greatly, Thanks again for ur time to help(not so worried now :yay: )
ill smoke one for u DoodleBug :smoking:

19. If you will keep us posted and allow us to see how it all works out for you and your crop.

Thanks GiMiK. That came to me one day last week. True eh?
