Best extraction method for low grade material?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by FarmerJames, Jul 9, 2013.

  1. Hey All,

I have been making my edibles from mid to very good trim & buds. I have been setting aside anything that was on the low end. Now I am looking at several ounces of buds & trim that came from a strain that turned out pretty puny. I made one batch of my peanutbutter pretzels and they were somewhat weak even though I used over 3/4gram per dose. I exctracted using the QWISO recipe stickied here then combined with coconut oil & added to my peanutbutter. Decarbed as usual etc...

I would like to make canna caps and wonder what the best method for efficient extraction using this kind of material would be? I am afraid that if I use the same method that I will not be able to fit enough extract in a #00 capsule to be worthwhile.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks

  2. Thanks for the reply!

Am I correct that the QWISO process is what you refered to as "solvent extraction"? I am currently extracting with 91% ISO and adding the result to coconut oil.

I would like to achieve a 2 capsule dose. That will give me some flexability without feeling like I am eating a meal of caps when I need a higher dose.

    Thanks again.

  3. Thanks for the input.

From what I have read the long chain fat bases make for better absorption with edibles (ex: coconut oil). I am not clear as to why but glycerine based extracts appear more popular for external application.

In a different direction:  I was reading about "Dry Ice Hash" and wonder if that may be more efficient at recovering the most usable material to produce concentrates for edibles?  Please let me know if you have any experience with this?

    Thanks again.

I just made up some more dry-ice hash last week :)  Dry-sifting in general is probably my FAVORITE way to go about producing a more concentrated oil, without sacrificing terpenes (or much time), and dry-ice sifting just makes it all the easier. :)

I've made a short video on the process that I've been meaning to share, not that it's anything you can't already find a dozen times over on youtube :p  But for now here's just a photo or two of about 1.5-2oz of sifted hash taken about half-way through, just before I did a final shake and switched out the old stuff for some fresh trim.
I like to do a first sweep and collection almost immediately, and set aside just those few grams to press for some tasty smoking and vaping (we'd already been sampling from the first jar for around a half hour :D ), while the rest is almost entirely for cooking. So the jars are the more 'smokable' grades, although most of the full one did get resifted/graded and went towards some dabbable oil, and some edible oil.

I'll usually use a mason jar for the cooking grade, but if I'm not making much I'll just use a glass or ceramic kitchen bowl or container like the one below, for the latter sift, and I'll get started right away with making oil. I like to use the early sift for clean smoking and vaping, and then use the material that comes out towards the end for edible oil, where more inert plant matter is likely to start breaking off and coming through by then. :)

This was just a small spontaneous run, to get rid of some old frosty trim.... an awesome patient sent me a gift of frozen steaks, that happened to arrive that day with a ton of well-sealed dry ice. :)

So I figured, why not make some hash? :D

Ideally you should shake directly into another bucket or container, or you should use a counter top that is against a clean wall or a similar set-up, or you should shake onto a quite large and clean, smooth surface, resting directly on the floor... otherwise, your counter and the floor surrounding it will look like the above, and you won't be able to collect and save as much. :) You should really only shake on a counter if you don't mind losing a little, for instance if this was a spur of the moment decision, all your gear has been packed up for a move, and you're just using up some plant matter you had laying around that you were just going to dispose of or give away anyhow. :p

  5. Thanks for all of the info!!

I am looking forward to trying the dry ice method. I just finished another small run Iso & coconut oil. The dry ice method looks a bit simpler .

How would you compare yield using dry ice vs Iso wash?

    Thanks again.

  6. Well I just finished a run with dry ice and yielded about 40 grams of kief from about 1/3 lb of trim & fluffy buds. I attempted to follow the recipe above (no lecethin) for cannacaps. I found that using the proportions in the recipe yielded a result that was too thick for me to put in the capsules.
I wound up adding additional coconut oil to thin it enough to fill the caps. I wound up with a 1tsp oil to 1 gram of kief. Slightly less than 0.2g per capsule.

My intended strength was 2 caps for a strong dose. It didn't quite work out.... One cap puts me on the couch and gives me enough relief to sleep 6+ hours and a refreshed clear head in the morning.

I just received my Lecethin and am going to try another batch and shoot for .13g of kief per capsule and add lecethin.

Thanks for all of the good help!!

    FJ.
