nettle and comfrey tea

  1. Hi all i am on my first grow and was going to use chicken manure and some kelp or greensand as fertiliser for my NPK values and wasnt sure if adding nettle tea during the veg stage and comfrey during flower would give me added benefit or am i going to over feed it that way? or if perhaps nettle tea and comfrey would be better than the former choices? if so how much should i use and how often. And should i use nettle and comfrey during veg and then just comfrey during flower? was also going to add some molasses and epsom salts, i dont really want to go mad on spending as the composts and peat etc are going to cost me enough already for 20-30 gallon holes therefore the nettle and comfrey sounded good.

  2. Don't think so much about different teas during different stages - they just use what they want when they need it anyhow.

Go ahead and just use the nettles and comfrey teas anytime - as microbe food.

  3. Drop the NPK mentality for the most part; instead, learn to depend on your "living soil" and organic matter. The NPK does matter, as well as PH but as far as this style of growing is concerned, the majority of the mechanics are taken care of by the interactions of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and plant root exudates. Therefore, don't stress so much about feeding one thing at this period and another during a differing one. Provide the soil with what it needs and it will take care of your plants for you.

Therefore, just stocking your soil with proper amounts of nutritionally rich organic matter (kelp, alfalfa, crab shell meal, neem seed meal, comfrey, nettle, etc.) and a decent source of "humus" (loosely defined for our practical purposes as vermicompost/EWC and compost) along with proper aeration will alow you to use simply water the entire growing season.

As to your questions, how are you doing your tea? Are you just steeping it in water for 1-2 days or are you making a fermented plant extract?

If it's steeping in water for only a couple days then I'd use up to 1/4 of whatever container you use to.

If it's an FPE I have little experience so can only offer anecdotal advice at best, though I've heard comfrey syrup is used at 20 parts water to 1 part syrup, by volume.

  4. Aw you beat me to it....

  5. What about too much potassium stunting the veg growth of the plant or the high nitrogen ruining the flavour of the buds? or is this just myth? but yes i have the rest figured out peat moss to retain moisture, perlite, grit for drainage, mycorhyzal fungus ( apologies for spelling) humus/compost, rock dust....i just wanted to get everything down to a T.

I was planning on making the concentrated version
thanks for the input guys! :)

While obviously extreme amounts of anything have the potential to provide negative effects, It has been my experience while gardening with a living soil that the soil microbes and plants will decide what the plants need and when they need it. Use everything in moderation - We are not talking about water-soluble chemical fertilizers here being force-fed to your plants.

No worries - just don't make extreme decisions using large amounts of any thing at one time and you'll be perfectly fine. It's the way that I garden and it works well for me anyhow - good luck. Everything in moderation.

    Hey Jerry
Been looking for my dried herb fertilizer at mountainroseherbs.com
And I came across some root powder from comfrey, nettle, and dandelion roots. will these have any benefits as a fertilizer. Maybe combine comfrey leaves with root powder?

Also I've been trying to source buckwheat hulls for aeration and found them again at the same site but don't know if they have to be treated as I will be using it in my soil mix. Can it be used? Here's the link
