Aquaponic Stealth Grow

  1. Hey all, new to the forums and generally a newbie when it comes to growing. But I have noticed there isn't much in the form of aquaponic growing and it's proper documentation. I figured I'd show you all my journey along the way. This thread will be slow going at first but once the grow starts happening instead of the build, posts will be more frequent.

Since every thread has to start somewhere...here are a few pics of the dresser/amoire that will be turned into an in-closet aquaponic grow.

Currently in primer since it was obviously brown and wouldn't blend in with my closet. The top part will get chopped off and be above the aquarium and the 3 drawers will be used as the stand.

  2. Here's an update above...the cabinet is installed and mounted to the wall. Gotta fix that pesky right door that keeps popping open. Not much else to report until next paycheck when I can buy the Hydroton, plumbing, and pumps (water and air). If you have an suggestions I'm always open to ideas.

  3. Hi T420L

I am not experienced in aqua ponic growing, but I have seen a few of them around the city. From what I gather it may be compatible with organics, if you have your soil containers lined in a flood tray. This way the water is cycled from fish to the plants, giving them the benefit of the nutrients from fish as well as the soil. then the water is also returning to the fish via an aerated reservoir. But again I have not installed or run such a system, so ?. Any way dude, looks interesting. keep posted!

Hi there Ski, I am growing unknowns in my aquaponics system only utilizing river rock, hydro ton, and lava rock in the grow bed, I don't use soil, thoug I am doing some research into dual root zones (aka Drz) my system is actually a flood and drain setup I have had for years. I decided to grow Aqua because there is nearly no expense in comparison to hydro which I was in for 5 years. I am using feeder Goldie's which i am sure will out grow my 15 gal tank and 2 koi. My seeds have sprouted and the first true leaves have shown their pretty little faces, I cycle 2 times a day because the Rockwool stays moist. I am also hanging 5 20 watt CFCs over the babies until they can handle my 400w mh lamp (until flower), then hps. I have a small grow area, 5' deep x 3' wide. Sea of green likely will be my method because my total height is only 5', and that is to the light. I can wait to actually watch the closed cycle work, 25 Goldie's and 2 koi. I am very excited, the Rez stays around 66 degrees, and the ph right at 7 so, happy fish happy plants. 2 12" air stones keeping it all happy. Thought about putting in a recirculator just for the Rez, to keep the poop moving, red worms and earth worms kickin it in the grow bed too.....
Becareful, fasten that lower cab. To the wall....
