Derek (UK) - Kindness is Magic

  1. My apologies if there's already a thread about this show, I looked but I didn't see one.

Anyway Derek is the latest TV series from Ricky Gervais, I'm sure a lot of you know who that is already.

Derek just finished it's first season (or series as they call it in the UK) and a second has been commissioned.

I thought it was one of the most profound and heart-warming shows I've seen in recent memory. I can only assume it would've been a million times more effective if I had been able to smoke beforehand. (I recently moved to Boston, MA and I haven't been able to find a connection at all...sucks)

there are 6 episodes in the first season, but there was a pilot last year that does fit into the narrative, so if any new people want to watch it I suggest hunting down both "Episode 1"s
I only ever saw it labeled as 1X01, which is the same that the ACTUAL first episode of the series was labeled on various torrent sites and such.
A bit confusing I know, but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Anywho, It's a great show, it's light on the comedy, but when it's funny it's DAMN funny. I really suggest it. Might be a good change of pace compared to the usual RAPIDFIRE of jokes we get from so many comedy shows these days. It's a very poignant show.

  2. This is one of my favourite shows.

I love Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington, and they both play these characters so well. Although is Karl really acting? I don't think he is...

I've cried in all but 1 episode I've seen. I cried because it's a sad reality, people like Derek get picked on, the elderly have family members that stop caring about them, and people get lonely. It's just so god damn sad, but hilarious at the same time!

I enjoy watching this show stoned. It's not a show to watch if you just want an easy laugh. It is a thought-provoking, kind, poignant, heartbreaking and funny series all in one.

I hope the popularity of this show spreads, and hopefully the kindness you see in the characters is somehow spread in real life through the viewers.

I will check it out, only found the pilot though.... usually I really like UK shows... Luther is insanely good, Misfits was a little weird, but good for passing time.

Are you from the UK? If yes would you be so kind to give me some recommendations?
