Is it possible to weld glass?

  1. I'm just thinking of making a homemade glass bong, but I'm not going to blow one

So, what I want to do is to join this 2 pieces, with a champagne cup with holes inside working as a perc, I know it's a crazy idea but it should work soo if anyone has tried it, please tell me how to do it.
    Peace :bongin:

  2. You may want to get special drill bits.

  3. im not 100% on this but i would say no.. you expose glass to a welding rod its more likely to make the glass explode than melt it uniformly..

for safety sake take your search to somewhere a tad more fruitful

    like google

  4. You can "weld" glass with a hot enough flame the trick though is that if you heat just one area it weakens it and is more prone to random cracking during cool down, especially if it cools down too quickly. Thats why when your blowing glass you constantly keep putting more heat into the whole body of whatever your blowing/sculpting. Its worth a shot if you already have the tools and are extremely careful, I cant tell you how many times ive burned myself on glass i forgot was hot or grabbing the wrong end of a rod. If you do decide to try it do some research on the basic principles of lampwork to get a good idea of what your doing and like i said earlier be careful you can get some pretty bad burns.

  5. Well I also wonder if there are different kinds of glass, because the jar in the picture looks like low grade glass and the bubble base looks like blown quality glass, or its the same glass?
It would be awesome to learn how to do it, everyone would be able to do it with the right protection and a potent flame (Oxibutane is too much?). Since cool, percolated glass pieces are soo expensive.
If I do it, I'm going to post pics and explain everything to make sure YOU can make your own crazy 3 perc GLASS bong.
Pace and thanks for the replies. :bongin:

  6. Chance of success - low.

  7. Hahaha I agree man but if you don't try, you won't do it, at least I'm going to try it and see if it explodes in my face or if I make a kick-ass bong.

  8. You can't weld it, but you can use epoxies to essentially glue them together, look for a nice putty epoxy and you'll be set.

  9. Ive made a lot of homemade bongs in my day. If you dont keep the glass cold while youre drilling it will definately crack. And even if you do keep it cold and work the bit slowly it will still most likelycrack. Be very careful and dont rush

  10. Try running the glass under cold water while you drill.

  11. I can't melt glass? please tell me why, because I'm not stopping my absurd idea unless it's absolutely impossible to join glass pieces.
And that glue is safe or...? I had the same idea but I don't like it much, if I can melt, better melt, if not, I don't think I'm going to use it (If its safe maybe), but thanks for the reply.
    :bongin:

  12. Yeah I alredy knew that, with oil is even better I think. But what i need to know is if it's possible to melt it. Anyway thanks.
    :bongin:

  13. Get temperature safe epoxy, it'll be fine unless you're putting a flame to it which you won't be hopefully. And no, you can't melt glass just at the edges to join two pieces.

  14. Just at the edges? What if i get the full jar semi molten? WHY I can't do it? Will it explode because I'll heat it too fast or too slow? I just want it to look great and I dont like much the epoxi, but I'll have it as an option.

  15. You could melt the glass with a torch like glass blowers do. If you look at a double blown bowls mouth peice, the inner tube is welded to the outer bowl.

  16. Do you know how they do it? (If they preheat the piece, how do they melt it without cracking, etc? How many ºC I need? Because i think oxibutane is too hot so a normal blue flame torch will do the job?

Sorry for asking many questions but, you know, this will help to anybody wishing to do the same, and it has to be done right.
    Peace ppl :bongin:

  17. Glassblowers use the propane/oxygen mix. There are videos all over YouTube. They just get it red hot and it softens up and they blend the to ends together.

  18. Someday I'm going to try it with oxybutane, with a jar, to see if it explodes or melts, one homie has an oxybutane smith torch, and we are going to see if it's possible.
    Meanwhile, more opinions :)

    :smoking:

  19. You crazy... would you even have anything to hold the glass when its hot, I can't see how you would have a rod to hold on to while working the glass.

  20. Well mistake number one is that those pieces are probably made of two different types of glass that won't be compatible with eachother.
