DIY Home Depot pipe

Discussion in 'DIY and Homemade' started by njkl44, Mar 1, 2013.

  1. Hey guys this is the pipe I made from home Depot the other day. It's all brass which is safe. Copper can cause lock jaw and such. It's 3 pieces which makes cleaning and getting resin easy. It cost about $10.

    Tell me what you think!

  2. Not trying to be a dick but IMO that's horrible, get yourself a small little glass piece and your set.

  3. did you clean it? pretty gross either way people drop them, stick their fingers in them, use them then return it you could have gotten a cheap gas station pipe for $10

  4. I think it looks pretty nice, though I'd definitely rather pick up a little glass piece for $5.

  5. coulda bought a cheap metal pipe for that much, maybe even a small glass one

  6. looks pretty cool for a home made piece. Home depot has so much stuff for making your own smoking devices. That being said I would agree with the others that getting a glass bowl would be a good investment. Even an acrylic bong is like $20 and those are really durable.
    Nice pipe though

  7. everybody thinks these are last resorts

i look at it as variety, i have glass pipes, wood pipes, stone pipes, but i like brass pipes too

heres one i made about a month ago

    overall cool pipe though

mine was free, i work at a machine shop and we have bins full of them here haha

  8. I think this is very creative! Cool to say you made your own pipe :)

  9. I like seeing homemade pieces that aren't water bottles. My friend and I made a percolator out of a couple mason jars, a recycled bowl/down stem, the tubes used for fish tank air pumps and a small shower line for a mouth piece. We had other bongs its just fun to make shit like that. It actually hit pretty nice when we only used 2 mason jars. We tried with 4 but the drag sucked.

Anyway I like the pipe OP

  10. For $10, could got a small bubbler.

Brass or any metal pipes are nasty IMO
    Glass ftw

  11. people keep in mind this is the do it your self section of the site the one part were you are supposed to post home made stuff that being said not to bad of a piece op just dont ask me to smoke from it

To the OP, heating metal and inhaling the fumes is not a good idea ever. I think the pipe is cute and I want to make one myself, but I wouldn't use it to smoke personally.

A regular Bic lighter burns at over 1000 degrees Celcius, this is more than enough to cause chemical reactions in many metals and to displace Zinc and Copper ions in an alloy and send these little "metal gases" down your throat.

  13. This is brass. So none of this applies here.

  14. In case you didn't know, brass is a combination of copper and zinc.

  15. Brass also contains small amounts of lead.

I homebrew and we use brass in many high heat situations in the transfer of liquid.

We "pickle" the brass by soaking it in vinegar for a couple of hours. That is supposed to remove any lead residue.

I have no idea if that is true, but thought I would pass it along.

  16. Good job very creative

  17. It looks awesome, but because of all the sense some of the blades made here, I would have to say I would not use it. I mean it is awesome, and looks great! So I can say that, but I personally would not use it. :p

  18. I love making pipes at my shop! I've turned and milled quite a few little pipes out of stainless, brass etc. we had laying around. Sooo much fun.

Love making these things, keep it up

  19. Those of you not CREATORS! making your own stuffs awesome made a glass bong myself and trying to make a glass on glass piece at the moment
    Try it yourself

  20. Soooo much hearsay. A little google (aiming for sources outside of yahoo answers...) goes a long way. Practically, brass is only bad because of its lead content. I stopped using brass piping in my builds because manufacturers still tend to add lead to make the pieces easier to machine.

However, you'll notice that brass screens are commonly sold here and elsewhere for smoking. I'd like to think that a red flag would have been raised at some point if these weren't lead free... (If we're giving up hope in our government's consumer protection agencies than be consistent and don't buy anything outside of locally blown borosilicate glass, the source of which you've researched)

Assuming whatever brass you're using is lead free (bad assumption, in this case), you'd have to start vaporizing it to inhale it as free ions or oxides of it's ores. I couldn't find a source for the temperature required for such a feat. So we'll be conservative and look at the melting point instead (look, I'm doing the best I can here.) This is, at the low end, 905 C. (Metals - Melting Temperatures)

Now, I also looked for a while to find an accurate measure of a flame from a bic, and all I got was the temperature of perfect butane combustion. [Throwback to highschool chem - if there's not enough oxygen present, combustion can't fully occur, and less heat is produced. Torch lighters introduce oxygen to the butane to get closer to this perfect combustion, thus achieving more heat.] That's a huge overshoot.

We can't quite know what temp a bic flame is at (or, at least, I couldn't find it), but what if I told you that glass begins to soften at 820 C? (Glass Properties, Technical Data for Borosilicate and Silica Quartz) Now, I'm not an expert on syllogistic argument, but I'd at least say that a typical lighter doesn't transfer that much heat, considering I've never heard of someone deforming their glass pipe with a bic.

bic flame < 820C < 905C < vaporization point of pure yellow brass

Also worth considering that a thick piece of any material will naturally distribute heat throughout itself, especially if it's a good conductor.

So, pure brass? I think you'll be OK.

TL;DR: Yeah, not the safest choice, although it's better than plastic or some shit. Those who are bitching are doing so for the wrong reasons and it's really quite irritating. I think most smokers agree that worldwide, the prohibition of/negative attitude towards cannabis is due to misinformation. Spouting of hearsay to denounce another's actions seems pretty hypocritical. At the very least, if you're actually trying to look out for others, don't be a dick about it, and do a little research first. Yeesh.
