Advised not to smoke Weed by a Doctor...

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by Thewastedyouth, Feb 27, 2013.

  1. A friend of mine was told by her doctor that because there is a history of schizophrenia in her family that she shouldn't smoke weed as it might 'trigger' it in her. Is there any truth in what he says?

I believe it was her Grandmother who had Schizophrenia. Also, this is in the UK, so remember that the quality of weed (alot grown inside using intensive growing, alot of 'skunk' too) over here stinks in comparison to the US. If you asked your dealer what strain he had you would just get a blank face and then he'd say 'weed?'

Did have some lovely Strawberry Kush brought in from 'Dam the other day though :smoking:

  2. If she hasn't experienced any issues with it, or anything like it, she should be fine.

There have been many threads posted here with a lot of strange answers on them that are misleading people.

I'd hate to see another one.

Anyone who has family genes like that should be wary of all drugs. I'm definitely not saying that it will, especially if so far they're doing fine, but they should be careful, especially if they're getting their stuff from random sources (aka dealers.)

You can find a lot better, more accurate info on some mental health sites, or by looking at other threads here.

It isn't what you think, but there is a link between weed and schizophrenia, though many here will try to disagree. Studies have proven that those that abuse marijuana at young ages are a few times more likely to develop the condition later in life, especially if it runs in their genes.

Now, this is not saying that your average adult who smokes in moderation is going to have problems. I'm just saying that they should be careful, because there are factors at play.

For example, one poster on a few similar threads was a regular smoker, sat down one day, smoked a bowl, began to feel some weird effects, then randomly went off the wall for 2 weeks. He was tested, nothing but weed. He was later diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. He had never shown any symptoms previously, nor had any previous incidents.

This isn't schizophrenia, no, but the mind is a curious thing and we don't quite understand it fully. So, anyone who has relations to somebody with these disorders or conditions should be very careful, as many people say drugs can and have caused those genes to become dominant.

If she hasn't had problems with weed in the past, it's unlikely she will have them in the future, but you never know. To be safe, smoke in moderation, and pay attention to the weed you're buying. I've never seen any tampering with any of the green I've bought, but you hear stories

  4. The Dr is only telling you what he believes and don't forget this person has a hidden agenda.

The whole mental health scare especially here in the UK is blown way out of proportion, I agree smoking bad quality weed wont do you any favors in the health dept mental or otherwise but it wont send you mad.

What tends to happen in these situations is people convince themselves their going mad because they read about it and it sticks in their mind, your mind goes into over dive you think every little thing thats happening which is negative must mean your going mad when in reality if your smoking grade A weed when used correctly and respected will help your mental health no end, a healthy mind is a healthy body remember.

My advice use common sense here, take a look at Holland or Cali where weed use is high and they have some mega strong stuff, has there been an increase in mental health problems? The answer is no,there actually declining.

Weed wont make you go mad but thinking about it will, if your not strong enough to get your head around this then maybe weed is not for her, weed smokers tend to know exactly what they want, to much doubting is a buzz kill, just smoke, enjoy, find the cream!

  5. At first I was going to question the stretch the doctor was trying to make there reaching back far into the family history for justification not to smoke here.

But after reading the above post, it tends to make a bit more sense. Thank you for the information!

  6. It triggers schizo in anybody. You just have to smoke shit tons for it to happen, or a family history of it, which in her case she does. But she'd still have to smoke it all day every day. Of she keeps it in moderation she will be fine

    Sent from above

  7. there is a correlation between the two. be safe about it. u dont want to end up heavily medicated in a hosiptal.

  8. I have a skitz, I smoke weed. I think the doctor is not quite up to date in today's, high medical CBD cannabis. He is generally referring to street weed. Watch out, if you have to buy from a dealer don't do it. But yeah a properly grown indica will do you well mate. Avoid plants that are super high THC and low CBD. CBD is a non psychoactive compound that counters the psycho activity of THC.

  9. Thanks for the quick replies! Ill definitely look more into the scientific studies on the link, as the reason I asked the question was because of what some of you said about the doctor having his agenda and personal view of weed. But obviously on a stoner forum Im going to get alot of people with their own agenda which is the complete opposite.

She's a dear friend so even though never chilling with a joint with her again will be shit, maturity wise it kinda has to be that way.

Like I said I will look into the studies that work on the link between the two, anyone got any links/pointers on places to research?

  10. Okay, about schizophrenia in Marijuana smokers:

There is no clear link between schizophrenia and marijuana usage. The tests they have done are somewhat flawed.

They were performed on teenagers mostly, and were not given marijuana to smoke over a long period of time. They were simply polled on their marijuana use.

In fact, many psychologists believe that people who suffer from schizophrenia use marijuana to self-medicate and ease the symptoms.

  11. Again goes back to the quality of weed in the UK, I have never encountered anyone (even on these forums) from the UK who is prescribed medicinal, all we get is street weed and the quality is generally shit.

  12. "that trying marijuana just once was associated with a 40% increase in risk of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders."

This fact probably has something to do with the fact that 99% have tried it at least once!

  13. Street weed has all kinds of issues. Improperly harvested, bad genetics you name it. I quit smoking weed for 8 years, well basically because it was street weed and it was all I could get a hold of. Go on a hiatus if you have to, until you can get some medical grade. Keep the faith.

  14. my psychiatrists said the same thing to me. i have bipolar, ptsd, depression, and schizoeffective disorder. he says it "has it has hallunigenic properties and that the bud out in the states is a lot more potent." if he asks me if i smoke i say yes and he really cant do much about that. he just says be careful, i dont recommend it. ill find a dr who does so i can get my card. good luck to you OP

  15. Definitely find another Doctor. Marijuana is THE best medication I have seen for the treatment of PTSD. In fact, I'm on my way to becoming a Psychiatrist myself just so I can treat other Veterans with PTSD with medical marijuana.

  16. I get kinda schizo when i burn thinking my buddys are plotting against me especially when im alone. Lucky for me im the most sane guy so i try really hard not to think that way trying to convince myself its all in my head i just hope it doesnt get worst as i get older, and i also hope i can keep it in check.

  17. Weed could literally work wonders in the mental health care industry if used correctly the possibilities are endless but for now health care professionals are quite happy to blame weed for the whole world ending, its far more cost effect just to blame weed, saves time, effort and paper work.

You know what works for you, its a case of trying each and every strain till you find one that agrees with you its like every thing in life, food, fizzy pop, shampoo, some agrees with you and some does not.

Whether its medical or not find the strain that agrees with you even if it means spending a fortune to get there.

Street weed is bad though in a lot respects and good in some ways, the positives are its not to strong so you can function ok, the negatives are well because the plant has not been grown correctly the make of the plants properties are altered so the effects are sort of the plants way of telling you to basically 'fuck off' for not doing a good job which surface themselves in form of anxiety, paranoia, uneasiness but nothing mind blowing in comparison to government manufactured crap like benzos.

Also strains that weren't finished or that are not ready for public release can make their way to the streets, there are lots of different factors that go into to the whole good weed vs bad weed things, best thing to do it trust your mind, learn, move on!

  18. I have a family history of schizophrenia and I have schizoeffective symptoms. I learned that when the symptoms are active I should stay away from smoking if it makes me feel worse. It really depends on the situation though. Some episodes it actually seems to help, which could even be strain related I guess :)

  19. I was told not to see a Dr. by my marijuana

  20. I've been told by a mean psychiatrist lady who doesn't smoke enough cigarettes and yell at people enough that it can make you depressed. Then told by a therapist that it's also good for you. Told by the smartest psychiatrist in town that if he were me that I'd keep smoking pot. I'm diagnosed schizo-affective with anxiety. It can make you crazy. Topics like this fluttering the eyes of people true to themselves will to make someone crazy. They could just as easily however teach people how to baseline it.
