Wait, can we talk about some rock?

  1. Rock is an extremely diverse music genre with a lot of sub-genres but all I'm seeing here is rap and hip-hop

I don't go on this forum nearly as much as I used to for that very reason. I'm a huge rock fan. Been playing guitar, sax, keyboards and singing for as long as I can remember now. My parents were old hippies and got me into the classics and some real obscure diverse stuff at that. My old man was like a hipster of today or something. Only liked the records no one had heard of. That upbringing led me to first get into grunge liveing in Montana at the time. It was so close to the NW coast I saw mad shows in Portland and Seattle in the early to mid 90s. From there I went all over...desert rock, old punk, thrash,***, also I'm really into the jam scene which evolved from my love of the grateful dead being raised by my deadhead mom. "Rock is my life and this is my song" In the words of BTO

  3. I love rock music, and as you've said there's many different sub-genres which is so awesome. I love the classics such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, etc. but I'm such a huge metal head. Bands that are tech death/prog are my favorite. Dream Theater, Between the Buried and Me, Misery Signals, Corelia, etc. but it's just so awesome how much one style of music can differ.

  4. Have you heard animals as leaders. They're super progressive and outstandingly talented. Can't get enough of this album

  5. I think people just prefer discussing hip-hop because it is much more popular in this era and there is much more potential for it as a genre. I hold my preference of rap over rock but I still consider myself a huge rock fan and listen to rock almost just as much as my other music choices.

I know that I prefer discussing rap over rock simply because the lyrics are much more interesting to analyze, and there are plenty of lines in each song to pick apart and discuss. However, that only applies to a situation where the artist you are listening to isn't shit.

That being said, my love of rock started with the Rolling Stones and spread in almost every direction imaginable. I am a huge fan of the Grateful Dead, The White Stripes, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kings of Leon, and many others. My choice now lies in folk more so than rock, but often times I find that these genres go hand in hand. I also listen to artists such as Blitzen Trapper, Band of Horses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Animal Collective, and Modest Mouse. Classify those as you wish. I'll post a few of my favorites with you guys.

I classify those bands as awesome. The first song I learned how to play on guitar was Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. Band of Horses is pretty good. Can't go wrong with RHCP. :smoking:

2 minutes in and my mind is blown. Ultimate fast paced guitar shredding drum smashing greatness

  9. I don't get caught up in the genre thing anymore. I listen to a lot of what you guys call 'rock' but I also listen to a lot more.

  10. Animals as Leaders are so sick, Tosin Abasi is one of my favorite guitarists right now, him and the guy from Between the Buried and Me, Paul Waggoner.

  11. I'm listening to a great jam right now. Its by Galactic who kinda defy genre. New Orleans jam band. Great fusion of everything.

  12. My love of rock music started with hearing Iron Man by Sabbath and some Bon Scott-AC/DC, never looked back, man. From Cream to QOTSA, Judas Priest to Neil Young, it's my favorite genre. I think it's more powerful than any other genre just because of the heaviness of the electric instruments used. When you put on a Sabbath or Motorhead record, you feel powerful. It's amazing and that's why, as Neil Young said: "Hey, hey, my, my, rock and roll will never die"

  14. Can you elaborate on how rap has more potential than rock?

  15. I like hip hop, but I have no idea how you can prefer it to rock.

  16. 99% of marijuana smokers listen to rap and hip-hop

  17. Lol I've noticed that. Still don't understand it. Rock is the best when you're high

99% of hard drug users listen to rap and hip-hop. Sorry but to me and my peers your statistics couldnt be any more biased. I understand though it could be complete opposite to you. I just can't listen to computerized sounds knowing that it took nothing but a push of a few buttons to create a song. Just doesn't flow right with me. I can't see that artist FEELiNG the music the way I feel it when ripping on the drums or strumming a guitar.
