Can I re-activate the carbon in my old carbon filters?

  1. Can I re-activate the carbon in my old carbon filters?

It occured to me that instead of just buying new ones i could either replace the carbon itself or perhaps even re-activate it somehow?

It seemed to me that by "soaking" the carbon in charged Ozone particals for a few days - every now and again - might have the potential to extend the carbons working life?

    or is this rubbish?

  2. I think you can but I thought you had to heat the carbon to "burn" out the smells. I don't know how hot or how long.

  3. that sounds like it could work - the heat might help purge any moisture thats built up in there - why not.

Is the carbon inside just charcoal?

Cuz i have a cool way of making lots of charcoal -

using the stream that runs through my land and a giant barrel of burning pine branches.

  4. no you cant recharge carbon. Imagine if you were able to purge all the smell the carbons been absorbing the whole time it was being used. oud be releasing months of pot stank!

  5. can the carbon be replaced inside the cylinders?

It seems very wasteful/uneconomical if not - we should definitely be putting pressure on manufacturers to stop selling us items that are designed to be wasteful.

  6. Carbon can be replaced in side my cylinder. Just undo the screws of one end and then empty it out and refill. You can buy replacement carbon online on amazon or at pet stores.

  7. those dont look like legitimate sources :/ Im open to being wrong about this but it just seems that if you "bake off" what youve absorbed, youd be releasing a TON of smell that you absorbed to begin with. I could be wrong, but Id like some REAL proof. Has anyone actually done this? seems like another web myth to me...for now ;)

  8. a short burst of strong aroma is no issue - if i'm prepared for it - As a midnight toker i just need it to not smell 80% of the time (during the day)

  9. IF that works, I wonder HOW strong it would be? if youve been absorbing MONTHS of pot smell and this ACTUALLY works, wouldnt you be cramming MONTHS of weed smell into MINUTES?!?!? unless the smell somehow bonds to the carbon and then that carbon falls away? I just dont think it would work, but if you do it and it does PLEASE respost on here. I hate throwing things away that can be recharged

  10. I cant picture the filter being 100% again but i think the steam method has the most potential - cook off the moisture and then soak in pure ozone for a week or so.

Otherwise i'am going to use them as wheels for a 50cc 2 stroke go kart :D

  11. Unless you have an oven that heats to 1500f it will not work.:D Also no smell would be released as the contaminates are burned up.

  12. I'm pretty sure i can make one - cinder blocks and butane

  13. there are steam autoclaves where i work??

  14. Been there man. You can't burn out the smell in a kitchen oven. It's gotta be above 800 degrees Fahrenheit or something. And it also cannot have the presence of oxygen. It doesn't take long. And honestly there isn't TOO much of a smell. It doesn't really smell like pot though ... I agree it is very frustrating. And you can't just toss a filter in the trash. It's a security issue(and it feels wrong too). But if you do figure something out or find some more information on the subject, please let us know :)

  15. Hire this company to do it for you www.calgoncarbon.com

I heard soaking it in 10%+ hydrogen peroxide then heating it in an oven helps get another use out of it. I haven't tried because I reorder it online when need be. I'll list a few of the sites I get it from.

This 7 ounce activated carbon costs $4.78 from a google-trusted online store. Here is the link

    Other brands

  16. I get four full cycles from new carbon by baking it at 500 degrees for 3 hours.  It stinks like hell for the first 2 hours    . The smell isn't like what it's been filtering.  It's hard to describe but you will want to open some windows because it will make your eyes water.  It works.  I replace the carbon with new after 4 cycles but I could probably do more in a pinch.

  17. Anyone else tried this?

  18. OK lets dispel the myths here... I own a company which uses activated carbon to filter vodka every day....we re activate and re polish the carbon weekly. the process is easy and can be repeated ad infinitum...it is boil the carbon in clean water in a good rolling boil in a stock pot for 2 hours...then place in a hot oven spread out on a cookie tray for a further 2 hours...the resulting carbon is as good as new and can be treated as you would shop bought.
