Most Intelligent Rap Group?

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by Sploojum, Oct 16, 2012.

  1. Discuss the most intelligent rap group to release music.

Whether it be Wu Tang, Beastie Boys, Taylor Gang, ATCQ, Outkast, whatever, which do you think is the MOST intelligent? Not most successful or popular, but intelligent.

For me it is a close tie between Tribe Called Quest and Wu Tang.

I believe that on a lyrical and poetic level, Tribe is superior in all ways. Tribe makes words and lyrics into a 5 star cuisine and dispense it with a perfect attitude and flow. They used words that nobody had thought possible in a rap song, and shined a bright light on the idea of intellectual hip hop music.

Wu Tang, however, is incredibly smart on a spiritual and emotional level (particularly RZA, GZA, GFK, and Inspectah Deck) and seem to just emit knowledge from every song they release. Wisdom can be sought and found in their albums.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKpIkOXgAmg]GZA feat. Killah Priest - B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) + Lyrics - YouTube[/ame]

I'll let you decide on which group you think is the most intelligent, keep in mind it can be any rap group you listen to, just provide reasoning (unless it is obvious).

this one was unreleased it, was a bonus on an album. im guessing he prefered anti-social because they both use "must not sleep, must warn others." personally i prefer it to anti-social. but they're both awesome.

  4. The Cunninlynguists for their superb production and lyrics that cease to amaze me. They have very unique sounding music and style and that confuses people, I think it is fucking great. Very emotional sounding music, they used to be one of my favorites (still are I guess). They also adress issues and there is nothing I enjoy more then seeing art (music, painting, whatever) used to make a difference or impact. Thoughts?

Mastermind is and will always be one of my favorite songs, in fact I was listening to it less than 30 minutes ago.

3030 was always hauntingly smooth and beautiful to me. I've only heard Time Keeps on Slipping a few times but its good as well.

Not a group, but here is one of my favorite Del tracks that he did with Aesop Rock:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7vSzgDhF3Y]aesop rock feat del tha funkee homosapien - preservation - YouTube[/ame]

Del is a master on the mic and Aesop makes clunky words sound sooo good.

Deltron 3030 is definitely a good one.

EDIT: Whoah I posted the Del+Aesop song before you even mentioned Aesop  Great minds think alike ammirigighhhttttt? No I'm probably wrong... But we both like the same music

holy shit he did a colab with aesop??? i havent listened yet but i think it has to become one of my all time favorite tracks. i mean they are my top 2 favorite rappers.

  7. Hell yeah man I love their sounds, they definitely hit on deeper emotions of life that's why I like it so much! First heard that first song Love Ain't on a Pandora station and I had one of those high life-changing revelations to music hahaha... :hello: anyways after that I googled them and listened to a bunch of songs on youtube and added their music to my Pandora stations, so they've been in my life a while now.. definitely feel like they've been a strong positive factor in my own growth :smoke:

Individual lyricists, I think of Talib Kweli, Guru, definitely Tupac if we're talking intelligence and biting lyrics..

  8. Yea man it is totally a good track.

Its done to a beat that sound VERY similar to Eminem's "Crack a Bottle" however I'm pretty sure this was released like many years before...

But this song was done for an album focused on Indie culture rap and its blend with more traditional rap and it was produced by the same guy who produced a lot for Wu Tang. It was sold and distributed under a Wu Tang title as like "Think Differently Music"

Its a pretty good fucking album, got MF DOOM and a lot of Wu Tang members on it.

  9. Blackalicious is a good one..

  13. great minds think alike bro!

  14. Must be the case because you have yet to post any music I don't like.

Anybody else have thoughts on intelligent rap groups? I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Outkast...

I mean was it not Run DMC in the 80's that made most of this other music possible? Just my thoughts on it.

    Back on topic...

Nobody has mentioned Odd future? I mean they aren't geniuses or anything but I know for a FACT some people think Tyler is God and Earl is definitely a God on the mic.

Nobody has even mentioned them yet? Oh well, I guess I just did...

Tyler has some really dark and meaningful lyrics but I think that he has a good point when he expresses the idea of hidden emotions and thoughts we all have just choose not to share. He is definitely a smart guy and pretty funny as well I am just not a fan of his music (anymore)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHX8X3wp9Q4"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHX8X3wp9Q4[/ame]

He seems very satirical and secretly genius to me. Kind of like Marilyn Manson almost, he just knows how to play with people and knows what will get a rise out of people. Just my input though.

I guess Tyler is the only truly smart one though because the others don't show much promise. Not that I don't like them, they all just seem pretty average on intelligence level (Don't quote me on that I could be very tragically wrong)

Not my favorite group by any means but definitely somewhat intelligent...

  19. i cant stand tyler the creator...
