Attic grow room! Q's that need answers!

  1. Hey everyone! I have started to design my grow room and have some questions that hopefully everyone can help me with :p

My grow room will be in a small attic space in my friends apartment. It is about 7.5 ft high and slopes down ( triangle attics).

I was thinking about doing 10-12 autos in there on 3G hempys with a1000w system.

Now this room is sealed and only has one door with no windows or vents. THERE is however an exhaust vent that runs from the bathroom to the outside and the attic has access to it.

If I have a carbon filter will I be safe projecting my air outside?? And anyone have any suggestions on intake??

  2. There's always the option to create new vents but that would of course involve cutting holes in the walls or roof. One way to go about this is to cut a duct-sized hole into the pressboard (or other material) of the wall but not through the siding of the building. With a bevel-type siding and a few others, openings can then be cut (or a a grid of small holes drilled) on the bottom of each piece's slight overhang to allow airflow but without creating any opening or damage that's obvious from the outside.

Alternatively, a new bathroom vent roof cap may be installed to be used solely for the grow's airflow. A hole is cut into the roof, the rain cap is mounted and the grow's air system is connected. It's a perfectly normal part of the roof that no one on the outside would suspect, especially if it's the same type as the existing one your bathroom vent connects to.

Without cutting holes in walls, you could use the bathroom vent ducting for exhaust, intake or both. For just one or the other, install a "Y" (Wye) duct in the segment of the bathroom venting system accessible in the attic and connect that to your grow's air system. You may even be able use or upgrade the current blower. Instead of using a Wye duct, you could also cease use of the bathroom vent altogether and only use the roof section of the vent system for your grow- just seal off the section between the attic and the bathroom.

To use it for both exhaust & intake, remove a segment from the portion of the ducting running through the attic. Connect the grow's intake duct to the duct leading to the bathroom and its exhaust to the duct leading to the roof. You then draw air from the bathroom and exhaust out the roof. The bathroom door must remain open when drawing air through it for the grow, as well as an opening in the building to the outdoors (e.g. a window).

You might also be able to use the opening between the attic and the rest of the building for circulation.

Yes, using a carbon filter of proper size with fresh activated carbon will eliminate odors outside as long as all air from the growing area that gets out does so through the filter. Airflow only used to cool lights doesn't need to be filtered if it doesn't come into contact with the plants.
