Is Coco Coir the same thing as Coco Peat? Sorry for dumb question upfront

  1. Hi everyone, I have a painfully newbish question:

Is coco coir and coco peat the same thing or are they seperate but similar mediums?

I've been googling it for a few minutes now and can't seem to find a definitive answer, from the looks of it, it seems that the two are used interchangably but I keep seeing the two terms thrown around.

Even the stuff I purchased from amazon says it's Cocopeat Coconut Coir Coco Coir.
Thanks for any responses, i realize this is a dumb question.

  2. I was wondering that myself. I got Cyco Coco. The bag says coco peat. Glad to hear it's the same thing!

  3. I remember a short discussion on Cyco Coco and I believe the consensus was that Cyco Coco is good stuff, use it.

  4. Very cool, thx guys

  5. Coco Peat and coco coir both are same. They are obtained from coconut waste. It is a Eco-Friendly products which is very useful in plant growth. As it has a slow degradation rate so because of this reason it is beneficial in the growth of the plants. If you use it then you need minimum water and fertilizer in gardening.

  6. MrTee, I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but Cyco coco is steamed as well as rinsed (at least their promotional material USED to say that)--this will kill the beneficial bacteria.

On the Cyco web site--under FAQs, I think--they even admit that they don't compost their coco medium, thus nitrogen draw down is another problem with their product.

House and Garden coco medium is THE best I've found. It's tested and guaranteed to have a salt content of 150-250 micro siemens (~75-125 PPM), which is very low. Further, it's buffered with calcium and magnesium.

    Bud

  7. Canna coco for me all day long or even plagron

  8. Hey there, if you want to get more information about coco peat, you can go through this blog. It's informative.
    Coco Peat

  9. Cyco coco is killer stuff

ive probably ran 80+ bags of the stuff and its extremely consistent, not a lot of that "coco dust"

its very fluffy and much, much more fibrous than other brands and roots go crazy for that

I wont use anything else, my hydro guy has bags on hand at all times..... just for me lol

the only brand of coco I think would be better is Canna. ive never tried it but ive never heard a bad thing about it. they have thricoderma (im sure i spelled that wrong) mixed in with it.

  10. agreed!  gooooood stuff

  11. Gorilla Boost Premium Coco coir will be better than Cyco Peat and Canna.  Its brand new and you need to know somebody to get it.
