BHO Question

This is my first thread and I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong area.
I read online about a 10:1 ratio for dank to bho. This seems correct to me. I tend to get a little under a gram of oil if I blast a quarter of dank twice. Recently my friend blasted a half oz of some decent shit and got 4 grams of oil off of the first blast. This doesn't seem right to me. He said that he started out slow with the butane and then blasted it. The oil is a lighter color than I am used to but I hear it's good. Why was his yield greater than normal? Is this quality bho or does it have butane/plant material in it?

Yield is based on a few factors, mainly the potency of your starting product. A 10:1 Ratio for bho is really low...unless your using really low quality shake/trim/flower. From some nice top shelf flowers, 20%+ yield is not uncommon, and i have seen over 25% return several times. That would be a 5:1 bud/oil ratio at 20% yield. You said your friend got 4 grams from a 1/2 oz? That would be a 35% return...never seen or heard of anyone getting close to that high of a return..except with bubble hash or kief that is..Perhaps he didnt fully purge or plant matter got into the oil like you said..
How fully and tightly are you packing your extraction tube? This might account for your low return %

I wasn't there when he blasted this stuff but we usually break it up into small nugs and fill the tube somewhat loosely. Usually I mix trim and flower, really anything with crystals on it. He said he started out slow and then blasted it.

With trim your quality will plummet regardless. Use only buds and pack em fairly tight. You should get like 1-2 grams per wuarter

You need to pack it tight, not loose.

With decent dank I average .8 g BHO/ 7grams.

On average i yield .5-.6 from 2.5 depending on the strain for the first run.then the second will usually yield me a .2-.3
It has alot to with the quality of product used to...i had this barneys farm lsd that gave me a close to 25% yield,when we ran the trim for oil though we got a little bit over a 10% yield.
