So I am starting to see more and more 5 watt LED's out there. Hydroponics hut just rolled out on for their Pro-Grow line..and some other companies have as well. Is anybody growing with these yet? Would love to see a journal on one. This is the next wave of LED's I think. What do you other LED growers think?

growbigtv

on youtube and also a journal on gc

oddly enuff for grow big the 1watt leds were the best yielding beating out the 3w blackstars (the panels also cost over twice as much as the blackstar)

I subscribed to that..he pulled the most of the blackstar 500..for the money BS might be the way to go. I have a 240 right now..I can only imagine what I could achieve with a 500.

Ouch they sure are pricey. I like that you can switch the specs alot tho. There the only ones that do that right?

That Pro-Grow 180 is $309.00 compared to Blackstar's 180w UV for $229.95 & HO for $239.95.

I would love to have something that switches but i can get a Feliz CFL Blue and Red blub(s) and it really do the same thing. There not that bad ether.

Those 5 watts are cool tho that means everyone else is going to be doing that soon too. I think Blackstar is about to start moving to that spec next year.

But im just saying there pricey not that there not good the video i saw proves that there bomb. Its for sure one to think about REALLY want a LED light. ^_^

Blackstars are a great value, but there is a difference in over performance between those and the Pro-Grow series you mention.

5w (Especially with the X-lens) are great,

but I find that you can do just as fine with any quality 1w or 3w chip set up as well.

Also, IMHO :o if you could go with either a single 500w or two 240w, I'd go with the dual 240 setup. The ability to better direct & overlap light is well worth the slight wattage loss.

peace,

e.

Been using 5 watt LED Panel since end of last year. Have the Solarstorm. Yes it is the evitable future of LEDs as when higher wattage LEDs come out those will to. Natural course of things.

What do I think. Get them if you can. 5 watt LEDs have superior light penetration over lower wattage.

The 800w Solarstorm. I got it for 1k on there buyers program they had. Great deal for a kick ass light. About the best in my opinion in terms of LEDs.

There 200w one would work great in a 2x2 area.

I want LEDs to come down to like .50 .25 per watt at least. LEDs are just so new and like anything new you will get raped on the inital cost. Im giving it at least 4 years.

I think the price is just about right. Theres a variety of prices and a variety of units out there to satisfy just about anyone.

You also have to remember that its a one time cost so they charge more up front. HPS/MH there is a regular reoccurring cost where they get a piece if your buying a replacement from them.

There is also 10x the labor involved as well in the things and unlike MH/HPS which is a mature industry there are literally tens of millions spent on research that is passed on to the consumer. Making a HPS light bulb is actually very simple. If you have seen the factories which they have shown on TV here or there its pretty simple and the tech for it really has not changed much in the last 50 years. Where as LED making requires a factory that is on par with what Intel uses for its microprocessor fabrication. Those costs of it are passed on to you. Basically the prices will never come down where there dirt cheap unless no more improvement is made no infrastructure upgrades and all they do is pump out by the trillions current LEDs then it might lower in cost dramatically.

What do you think is the next step with LEDs. As in improvements to canopy penetration broader spec chips stuff like that.... Also The LEDs and the density of the bud is that brand specific or just what happens?

I think 5w LEDs Diodes have brought LEDs primetime now. There light penetration is many times greater then lower wattage ones. I think as they come down in price you will see them in most of the mainline LED panel makers.

For California Lightworks they found that there 5 watt LEDs light penetration was so massive that no lens was required so there 120 degree light. You will notice on alot of others they add lens to further penetrate the plant...that lowers amount of light as the lenses itself sucks some of it away. Why I went with Solarstorm.

More spectrums could be added to. Most do not realize that there still trying to perfect other colors. LEDs never really were sold for household use because they were not able to perfect a White LED till the turn of the 21st Century.
