i grow in a soiless medium (peatmoss coco fiber and perlite) and i'm not always around on weekends and the pots just dont hold enough to tide them over 3 days. i've got most of my plants sitting in black 2" deep trays and have been filling the trays with water and nutes before i leave on friday and everything seems great when i return on sunday. this works for now but next time i was thinking racks and wicks running into the pots? seems simple enough and the pots won't be submerged like they are now when im gone extended periods of time. any opinions or experience with this method? i know there are alot of efficient ways to grow hydroponically. sounds like a relatively low maintinance and inexpenive option

Tried it once 30 years ago.
At the time I had a 1000 watt MH light in a basement room. Was just learning to grow. I used 1/2 vermiculite and 1/2 perlight. (bare with my bad spelling) I took a cotton flannel shirt and cut 3 squares as large as I could, rolled them up into wicks. Had a large squat rubber container, about 4-5 gal., and a plastic oil drain pan, new of course, with 3-4 blocks to hold the tub just above the rim of the drain pan. Cut 3 holes in the tub for the wicks. Ran them about 1/2 way through so they could lay at an angle accross the bottom. Filled with the soiless mixture and layed the wicks on the bottom of the drain pan. Have quite a bit of wick both inside the tub and in the pan. I watered from the top of the soiless mixture until it just about filled the drain pan. When I use the nutes it would leave a green color on the top of the soil as it evaporated. I would used plain water to wash it back down as needed. When the color got light I would give it another shot of food.
Worked real good but at that time the only way I could get hydro ferts was mail order (no internet yet, 1980's) never had a chance to try it again. I know with the large container and reservour it would last a few days.
