I flipped the three survivors to 12/12 just yesterday. Right away things seemed better...wierd, I guess I was starting to miss that HPS light and all the daily drama...then it came back to me, like the warm rush at the end of a long toke of this vortex bubble ...

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902693&stc=1&d=1339871052

...this veg period was nothing but drama. I was so mesmerized by the flowers on the other side of the grow that I failed to notice, until it was....too late?

It all started cooly and easily enuff. Six seeds of Jack the Ripper, one freebie of Kushage. JTR a long-damn awaited strain for me to try, seeds stashed for over a year. My choice of competitor against Super Lemon Haze, vying for the coveted lemony haze hybrid spot amongst the mums. Kushage, just on the (unlikely) chance that one plant might beat out SAGE as a mother-I;d-like-to-keep. MILK. and a new starting method and way to use up all those old readi rooters I'd bought and stored when I built the aerocloner and found that it rocks.

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902706&stc=1&d=1339871565

The method worked just great: 1/1 on the Kushage, 7/6 on the JTR (one twin).

bout then I noticed how it was going with Qrazy Train and Vortex over on the other side of the grow. It was going like this:

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902708&stc=1&d=1339872502

I was mesmerized--still am, only now I'm tasting that girl, not just staring at her and drooling.

meanwhile, back in veg, I did get the seedlings xplanted to little smarties. I just used the last of my last round of soil, since I had some surplus, instead of opening the big new bin of goodness--figured I would save the newly refreshed stuff for the xplant to bigger pots.

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902709&stc=1&d=1339872522

but after a few weeks of drooling about the flower girls and pretty much ignoring the veggers, in other words getting life out of balance, the veggers looked like shite

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902710&stc=1&d=1339872522

and on the other side, powdery mildew had raised its nasty hyphae. and to make matters worse, I's about to take off for a week or more away. What was up with that? Had my luck run out?

on return, the last grow had dried nice and the PM problem was minimal. Not so self-healing with this new grow, though They looked like even worse shit.

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902711&stc=1&d=1339873093

Ipulled them out, finally, and looked at them real close. Pathetic, stunted...something was clearly wrong. I thought it must be the use of the older soil that was long past the window when I "activated" it. Maybe there was no life in the soil, and since I was adding nothing but water, the plants were starving. This seemed consistent with the necrosis in the lower fan leaves of all the plants

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902712&stc=1&d=1339873112

Kushage was the worst of all, and hmmm, what's up with all those black or dark green spots on some lower leaves. Time to look up close. Oh oh

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902713&stc=1&d=1339873093

thrip larvae!

two grows ago, it was spider mites; last grow, PM. now thrips. phuk.

I fought off the mites and minimized the PM losses. But all I had on hand that might combat these fierce phuckers was some azamax, some safer soap, some mighty wash and some mosquito dunks. I made up a potion, sprayed, lightly plowed mosquito dunk dust into the soil and worried. :(

The next day: not a lot of improvement, and the phuckers still moving on the Kushage, the worse hit with the larvae. That's it, I decided, for Kushage' run; too much risk keeping her around. And off to a supplier of Spinosad

Spinosad works, folks. And here's a closeup of a gelatinous mass that just half a day before was a living chomping larval form of thrip, imho:

Whew! so far, so good...now to nurse these poor runts back to health and get em on to flower or whatever is going to happen. I am running strains pretty fast, probably too fast, but am in the home stretch of this long trip to fill a top ten muthers cabinet and am like that horse heading to the stable world of clone-driven, small number of purely primo plant grows. I hope. ;)

I chucked three male JTRs and transplanted the three remaining, two of which are clearly female and the third of which is withholding her pussy hairs so far, but I have that feeling, ya know, that she's gonna be a she for sure. She's the small pheno and I know from the literature to be on the lookout for small phenos of this strain. Well hell they are all small relative to my last couple of grows, but that's part of the plan for PM risk reduction. Fewer, smaller plants for now.

They are still looking grotty in the 5 gal smarties, but all I can afford schedule wise is another day or two to get over the xplant shock and get ready for the big light in the sky. It ain't ideal but then neither is reality. THe new supersoil is literally teeming with soil mites and they went really gonzo when I re-sprayed the plants and soaked the soil surface with Spinosad. So I know those bacteria in there are going to be gorging for the next few days, at least :)

Man Papa, you are fast on the uptake! Glad to have you here. Hope you aren't too pissed that I went ahead and rolled out chaps. 2 through 5 or so. I decided to fast forward to realtime just as quick as possible this grow. To share the mystery totally, cause it feels that way to me, too. So here they were yesterday after flipping them to the thoroughly scrubbed flower chamber and firing it all back up

http://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=902734&stc=1&d=1339875401

JTR2 is the small one to the back left; grown natural but pulled over a bit into a leaner. JTR 3 on the back right is also untopped, but I have pulled all the lowers down and out to see if I can get anything going with bud sites down there. JTR 4 front and center was hard topped above node 4 and I have also pulled down pretty much all of the branches, not just hte two main leaders.

Ooo, the damage done...sorry, Neil Young on Pandora atm, and that's exactly what I am wondering, what is the damage done?

Heh...as with any good tale, the hero can't make a bee-line up the mountain to success. He has to fall and break his leg, then struggle through storms of epic proportions, while battling evil forces intent on destroying his dream.

Good shit Marapa! I just got some Spinosad a few days ago and I'm thinking to mix the batch tonight (I bought a concentrate) and hit the whole garden outside at sundown. There is a ton of bugs outside, and I'm not that good at identifying them (yet). Hope everything works out for the young fledglings, its bug season...

Exactly, Papa...and so it is with growing. Just so we don't have to do a lot of field amputations. ;)

Looks to me like it's gonna be bug season forever in my little indoor grow. I just have to stay on my toes to deal with the unwanted ones...and figure out which are which. So far, so good with the spinosad. I did two treatments, soaking all the veg and pouring some into the soil. They seem to like it. I sure hope so.

thanks mang. Now that they're in my temple of Ra, there's nothing to be done for awhile but monitor the environment, burp the new jars, tweak the sound system and snap an occasional stash pic. Speaking of which:

One week cured Vortex., XCUhttp://forum.grasscity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=903280&stc=1&d=1339939803..looking, smelling and hitting real good :smoke:

Yeah same here Marapa so far so good, Spinsosad smells really good too IMO, when I was spraying I got that "soil fresh" whiff right in my face.. I'm liking the price of the concentrate too, its not bad compared to the pre mixed spray bottles. I actually got to smoke some Vortex the other day, it was really good actually, it wasn't finished curing either, broken up in my grinder it smelled like skittles.

Yeah Noob, that Vortex is tasting and smelling real good and sweet, just like GJs predicted. I'm liking it a lot. :smoke:

Here are the JTRs, three days after the last shot (day 5 after flip). I have hope for them. Feels like they are healing...not yet taking off with new growth, but it's starting.

That isn't Thrips larvae, as far as I can tell. That's some sort of flying thing "order: diptera". Thrips are Thysanoptera which is distinguished from Diptera by the fact that Thrips have a larva AND pupa stage. Flies (diptera) do not pupate.

By the way, my brother from another mother...those babies got enough green on them to support 5 other plants. You're good to go. They will be fine :)

Edit: I'm looking at my two posts back to back here....one avatar says I'm online, and the other avatar says I'm offline.

Gonna go smoke a bowl and make something metaphysical out of that for jollies.

Edit 2: I found this interesting, and I don't really recall if you pluralized correctly or not, but my professor was so adamant about this, I figure I'll pass it on to your readers. The singular form of Thrips is.....Thrips. There's no such thing as "thrip." :) I know it's trivial, but you like trivia (deductive reasoning - one cannot be a bozo on this bus and not like trivia) :)

It's post til you drop day on Marapa's thread. 3 in a row as a subtle hope for a threepete for my Gamecocks after their 1st loss to Arkansas. I have no idea how Kent State beat Florida - their pitching in the 9th was horrendous, but it's fine with me.

This 3rd post is just for great justice. You take beautiful pictures, man - this is stunning.

Hey my friend Marapa!
I need your help (if you dont mind).

Here is my scenario:
I just bought Kosher Kush (for my father). And With it I got 8 Additional strains. My problem is, I only plan on starting 2 maybe three strains total. So I thought, of some one who has tried a bunch of different strains who is also someone who's opinion I have great respect for. And you were the first and only person I that came to mind.

So here is my list of strains that I'd like to choose 2 or 3 from:
Kosher Kush
Lambo / Rambo
Blue Dream Haze
Kandy Kush
Pineapple Express
Critical Jack Herer
Cheese Auto
Northern Lights x Big Bud Auto
Afghan Kush x Skunk

I also have a few different strains already in the line up
Critical +
Blue Queen
Kona Gold
Super Lemon Haze
Tangerine Dream
Liberty Haze
and Emerald Jack

Your Opinions what i should start would be greatly appreciated!

Sean brah,
sad to say, but of that big list I have only grown Kandy Kush and Super Lemon Haze. The Kandy Kush I got as a cut and it's killer; it was tested at a Mich lab and had off the chart rsults. Plus it's very sweet tasting, just as its name implies. I also have a freebie seed but am holding on to it while planing to grow out the KK again soon. Mahalo nui nui to the Prof for those genetics!

SLH I grew in my batch of haze hybrids. I grew just one plant. It wasn't the smoothest grow and of all the haze hybrids I tried it was def not among the more vigorous ones, plus the buds were really airy. But having said that I have held on to it, cause I like the taste. The JTR I am running at the moment--it is intended to be a competitor to my SLH. Whichever one has the best lemon taste, hopefully along with the hardest hit, will keep that spot amongst my mothers.

I am very glad I ran those seveal haze hybrids. I have found a couple, Utopia and Royal Haze, that fit a buzz slot for me that I have more and more come to appreciate--I call it the champagne buzz. It's that high, but not stony high, where you just feel uplifted....you might still pull some stoner move and rmind yourself that yes you are stoned and don't always remember and do things the same way, but in general, you want to be up and about and just happy.

On the other end of the buzz spectrum for me, I plan to spend more time looking to fill out the narcotic end--I have one strain now that just puts me lights out, I go to sleep right away (Blue Thunder) and I'd like a few more that aren't lights out but are various flavors of "turn the lights down low."

So my advice to you is limited by my experience with those strains, but I'd say to group them according to their predicted growth habit (for example, in my environment, SLH like those other haze hybrids and one full on sativa I tried have to be flipped after little or no veg or else they stretch out of control) and then just run em all. And tell us what you find! :smoke:

Marapa my braddah!

Thank you for your response! I know what you mean about the SLH not being the "smoothest grow". I think I grew this thing out three times already and only now really figured out the "secret" ingredient for this things growth lol. But please don't give up on this strain. The first time I grew it, i almost threw the strain away with the problems in grow to the quality of medicine that i came off with it. The second and third time, was just WOW! An experience I wouldn't trade for the world! It was just beautiful! Epiphany type shit lol.

I know you love that Kandy Kush! Even thought your not in my situation, what would you choose if you were? (Im sorry for pestering you with this.) If you had to choose two from that group which would you choose? :) thanks for being patient with me :)

Glad I could make it early this time! Awesome story!

I was wondering where you got the Vortex from? Seed or clone? I feel like ordering seeds and that looks so yummy.

Plus I love skittles!!!!
