Obama's October Surprise Could Be Legalizing Pot

COMMENTARY | The Atlantic Wire believes that it has hit upon President Obama's surefire October Surprise to change his political fortunes and get him re-elected for a second term. That October surprise would be for him to support the legalization of pot.

This last-minute gambit has an advantage to starting a war, being that no one would get killed. The theory is that young voters, disenchanted with Obama because of the fact they are still living in their parents' garage three years after graduation and can't get a job, will be motivated to turn out for him because he supports legalized dope smoking.

The Washington Post related David Maraniss' claims of Barack Obama being a pothead during his high school days. The gambit would also answer Penn Jillette's recent rant on the hypocrisy of Obama, a self-admitted former doper, enforcing drug laws that put people like he used to be in jail.
The idea that Obama can get potheads motivated enough to turn off "The Daily Show," get off the couch, and go to the polls is a very charming one. To be sure, people voting while stoned could explain a lot of election results -- the re-election of Jerry Brown as governor of California comes to mind. But the legalized pot gambit has some pitfalls.

Millions of people, likely more than who toke while laughing hysterically at Bill Maher, are against legalized drug use. Rasmussen suggested that a plurality of 47 percent of Americans favor legalizing marijuana and taxing it, which makes the say yes to drugs gambit just a little tempting to a president facing defeat in November. But such a move could be turned back on Obama fairly quickly.

Mitt Romney, whose skill at the political riposte has become well known, would have lots of fun with an Obama legalize dope initiative. What next, he will ask. Selling crystal meth to school kids from vending machines? And if Obama proposed taxing pot at the same time, Romney would think that the good lord really does want him to be president. The conservative base likes few things less, besides gays getting married, than legalized dope and raising taxes, even on legalized dope. What, Obama would ask, does this have to do with a bad economy?

One hope would be left for Obama: a stimulus package for pot growers. It may be his only hope.

Hahah. For whatever reason, I highly doubt this. Entertaining read, despite some of the derogatory stereotypes thrown around in there.

It's kinda like black people and their n word. Don't call me a lazy, unmotivated pothead unless you toke with me on the reg.

It would be the biggest shot in the dark ever. However, if true potsmokers really did come out in the open and say this is enough right at the time he made the announcement then it would be in full swing...
Think of it like this
People Opposing it have nothing to gain if it passes, except cigarillo companies... So therefore they will not be in the streets protesting.
However,
All of us have EVERYTHING to gain...
Im just saying Ive never been one to go out and protest or petition. But, if my president came on TV and said let's get real and adult about this and actually legalize Marijuana. I'd hop my happy ass off the couch and campaign for that dude! Ill pay people to vote for him, whatever it takes!!!

For some reason I really can't see that happening, but I truly appreciate your optimism.

What is it with these articles lately hinting that Obama might legalize? The man already said he is against legalization. I'm all for a little gullible, wishful thinking, but this is just ridiculous. Obama doesn't give two shits about your rights or mine.

But it'd be pretty cool if it got legalized, regardless. I still wouldn't vote for him for president either, but having a president openly support cannabis legalization couldn't hurt the cause, even if it is just Obama.

Uh.... Are you kidding me? Back in 2012 you were addicted to the marijuana, and you think you're getting my vote for any sort of political office?

Neither of you would vote for him if he promised to legalize marijuana? That's surprising. I could deal with him 4 more years for a legalization that lasts a lifetime. Hell I'd stay in a fucking box for 4 years if thats what had to happen for it to be legal for everyone. Which by the way is what most of us will be living in if we do vote for him:D

White Out, if a candidate, who's promise was actually worth something, promised marijuana legalization, we'd both absolutely vote for him. But as soon as he secured presidency again, he would be anti-marijuana again. That's what we're saying.

Makes absolutely no sense the people opposing it have everything to lose,

The pharmacueticals stand to lose billions in revenue from pain medicine to there new thc pills currently in the pipeline.

The private prison industry stands to lose billions they currently house about 10 percent of the total prison population with 50 percent of the current prison population being in for non violent drug offenses, this would cause a major decrease in prison population which would make there industry unnessesary and irrelevent.

The 100's upon 1000's of state, local and federal Drug task forces and agencies who although tasked with stopping all drug's, use the vast majority of marijuana arrest's to justify there existance and continue to recieve billions upon billions of taxpayer monies.

The major and minor banks who recieve billions in bottom line profits through the laundering of drug profits.

And all this effects wall street who continue to make money on these very safe investments.

These companies do not care if the country can make more from legalization and taxation, these companies are making money now, they give a shit less if your kids get a decent education or your grandma get's her medicine, why oh why would they ever allow that to stop?

So yea since there is no way a President can just say it's legal now and it will be, and since there is no way Congress would pass it into law even if it didnt effect there buddies on Wall street in a negative way.

Im just going to conclude with the fact that the opposition has nothing to gain is the point, They have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that even if he decided to come out in favor of legalization (which he won't) the President doesn't make policy. It's congress that is the main problem. And who knows how many current butt hole congressmen have to be replaced for this to happen.
