So I've got some cactus seeds and I am getting a little antzy-in-the-pantsy to get going. After looking over some other mixes and looking at stuff i have on hand, i came up with this:
10% sand
20% lava rock
20% course arragonite
20% perlite
20% canadian sphagnum peat
10% compost
to be fortified with a normal sized dose of rock dusts and a very light dose of kelp and garden-tone
Does this sound like a viable mix, cactus fans?

Mix complete. I went with this:
20% sand
20% lava rock
20% arragonite
20% perlite
10% organic potting soil
10% compost
Amended with less rock dust than I planned. There was plenty of dust left over from breaking down the lava rocks into little bits, so I didn't see the need for more. Now the seed hits the dirt...

What species do you have? I've always loved to look at cacti and hopefully I'm going to start growing some after gaining more knowledge of them:smoke:

I was considering growing San Pedro again. I bought a damn huge one back in the 90's, but I ate it. These are just some cacti for decorative purposes.
And for the record, fuck peyote eating! It's endangered and super slow growing. San Pedro puts on about a foot per year!

im saying from seed though thats not endangering it they sell seeds all oveer the internet and you could start them for a year as seed and then graft onto the pedro it makes a golf ball in a year!

Now I'm really dumb-founded. These cactus guys make their soil, throw it into the microwave until it's biology is no more, then drop in a few seeds and seal the container shut for a couple of months. I started a couple of tiny pots like that, but I am going to try a few other ideas still, that's for sure.
1 year? I would think taking a peyote from seed to graftable scion would take a lot longer. I'll have to look into that. Maybe you've got a link?
But then again, if you already have a large san pedro for the stock, well, I'm just sayin'....

After further investigation, I think that the stock in the second pic is pereskiopsis.
In other news, the seeds are now showing signs of life.

I have some san pedro seeds that should arrive in the mail any day now! im realy excited but i have a question maybe one of you guys could answer.
I have some sand that i plan to put into my cactus soil mix, how ever i got the sand from the beach. I baked it in the oven to make sure i killed anything living in the sand but i just had a thought that the sand might still have salt from the ocean, will this be a problem at all?

perhaps, high salinity is bad for some plants, but perhaps if you just dilute the sand and use it for a small portion of your mix it wont be a problem?
